Abstract

Purpose

Policies intended to encourage gender equity in the film industry are ramifying and take many forms. This paper uses social network analysis to assess the effectiveness of one popular equity policy, shadowing, a form of mentoring. In shadowing programs, women and gender minorities (WGM) are connected to more experienced members of the industry through attachment to their productions.

Design/methodology/approach

We constructed real collaboration networks based on film releases from 2005 to 2020 in three countries and simulated the effects that hypothetical shadowing interventions would have on the distribution of social capital in these networks. We implement different versions of the intervention, including different eligibility criteria for shadows and shadowees as well as isolating the additive effects on participants’ project portfolios.

Findings

We find that shadowing is effective in enabling WGM to access the strongest network positions, which are currently disproportionately occupied by men. However, we show that the primary reason that shadowing is effective in doing this is because it provides a second project affiliation to WGM in an industry where it is difficult to get past one’s first project.

Originality/value

Our study contributes to the literature on how mentoring policies affect people’s professional networks as well as scholarship on mentoring as a gender equity policy. We contribute novel evidence to debates about the efficacy of shadowing programs for WGM in the film industry. We suggest that shadowing can be effective as a tool for not only helping individual WGM advance their careers but also for structurally reconfiguring the distribution of power in project-based collaboration networks.

Abstract

This article describes a national guideline for the use of medication in the management of problem behaviours in adults with an intellectual disability. As problem behaviours in this group are common and medication is often prescribed ‘off licence’, it is important that a framework is established to direct this practice. The article details a guideline development project that is of importance because it is the only national guideline in the area. It also highlights important issues in clinical practice in the field, and addresses the current evidence base on the effectiveness of psychotropic medications in the management of problem behaviours. There is a lack of good research evidence to support use of medication for problem behaviours. Where medication is used for this purpose, it should be used with a clear rationale, following a thorough assessment of the individual, and carefully monitored, and withdrawal should always be considered. People should always be given information in a way that they understand, and they should be given choices about their treatment.

Abstract

Purpose

Though the very high prevalence of psychiatric disorders (PD) in people with intellectual disability (PwID), the impact of these disorders on adaptive functioning has been minimally investigated. The few contributions present in the literature focussed on children, adolescents, and individual with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). There are no studies concerning the evaluation of any kind of impact on individual skills. Comparison studies between PD and organic disorders, including neurological disorders (ND), was also underexplored. The purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of the presence of a PD on the adaptive functioning of adults with intellectual disability (ID).

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 107 adults with ID living in residential facilities or attending day care centers in Tuscany were consecutively assessed with the Psychiatric Instrument for the Intellectually Disabled Adult (SPAID-G), the Diagnostic Manual-Intellectual Disability (DM-ID) criteria, and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS). The scores were statistically compared and results were controlled for level of ID and other background variables.

Findings

The presence of a PD resulted to have a significant negative impact on individual adaptive skills. Participants with PD scored significantly lower than those without PD in communication and socialization areas of VABS. Participants with ND scored significantly lower than people without ND in daily living and motor skills. The average scores of participants with only PD and those of participants with PD and ND showed no significant differences. Significant differences were found between participants with only ND and participants with ND and PD in the interpersonal relationship subscale.

Originality/value

As far as the best knowledge, this is the first study on the evaluation of the impact of any kind of PD on the abilities of PwID. This paper suggests that the presence of a PD seems to have a relevant negative impact on functioning of PwID higher than that of ND, particularly in communication and socialization skills.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to investigate the role of information asymmetry in the equity selling mechanisms chosen by the firms from an important emerging market, India. Specifically, the authors look into the choice between the two most popular mechanisms of equity issues – rights issue and private placement of equity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study introduces three analyst specific variables as proxies of information asymmetry as the conventional proxies are fraught with several disadvantages. First, the paper tests the choice between rights issue and private placement using a binary logistic model. In the second approach the authors use rights issue and segregate the private placements into preferential allotments and qualified institutional placements and test the impact of information asymmetry using a multinomial logistic regression.

Findings

The outcome of this empirical exercise shows that only those firms facing lesser information problems choose rights issue of equity. Private placements are chosen by firms facing higher information problems to circumvent information costs. The results remain invariant even after segregating the qualified institutional placements from private equity placement as the firms with information disadvantage choose to place equity privately.

Originality/value

In contrast to the conventional studies that focus on the debt-equity framework, the authors argue that the impact of information asymmetry is applicable even at disaggregated levels of equity selling mechanism.

Case overview/synopsis

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony, which honored movies released in 2021, was held on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. Prior to Chris Rock announcing the winner in the category of best documentary film, Rock was assaulted on stage by Will Smith. On April 8, 2022, the Academy’s board of governors met to discuss disciplinary actions for Smith’s behavior. The Academy’s board decided to ban Smith from all Academy events for the next 10 years. Theories of individual behaviors and social processes can provide explanations for behaviors of Chris Rock, Will Smith, the producers and the Academy.

Complexity academic level

This descriptive case is most appropriate for undergraduate-level organizational behavior courses. The primary topics in this case align well with individual behaviors relative to emotional intelligence (EI) and motivation. The secondary topics in this case align well with social processes relative to decision-making, conflict and culture.

Abstract

Purpose

Researchers have investigated the distinctions between founder and nonfounder chief executive officers (CEOs) for different performance variables. Researchers have also investigated the use of media as supplemental information that investors review to make decisions about initial public offering (IPO) firms. Research that investigates founders and nonfounder CEOs of IPO firms in the media is limited but growing. This paper aims to explore how founder and nonfounder CEOs' narratives are portrayed differently in business media following an IPO.

Design/methodology/approach

Using insights from the narrative paradigm, 1,057 news paragraphs about CEOs from 19 matched pairs (38 firms) were content analyzed using a contrasting coding strategy.

Findings

Founders and nonfounders' narratives differ in three ways. Specifically, founder CEOs are more likely to (1) have their personal background detailed in the media, (2) translate technical business information to easy-to-understand general language and (3) be quoted talking about positive information than nonfounder CEOs.

Research limitations/implications

The results of this study show the media's role in creating narratives about management and how the experiences of founders and nonfounders are represented differently in the media. The study is limited by only investigating media articles about CEOs and not investigating the entire organizational narrative.

Originality/value

This study adds to the growing literature that investigates the role the media plays in portraying management in the media at time of IPO.
