Abstract

Draws on a study conducted in a grocery chain with over 50 stores, located in the western USA. Simulates selection of a grocery item, for a chain store advertisement, using a logical flow chart model of the decision and then conditions favouring successful simulations are discussed. States research is based on two sets of data, published ads and transcripts of interviews with chain executives. Gives examples of grocery ads and discusses them further. Summarises that the attempt to simulate selection of a single grocery item for a weekly chain ad produced a simple model and its simplicity probably stems from several causes.

Abstract

Studies purchasing responses of small firms to the introduction of a new product. Indicates, from results, that search and evaluation phases of the decision are severely abbreviated – also small firms exist in informationally‐barren environments. States that academic interest in organisational behaviour has been increasing rapidly since the Second World War, in particular with regard to decision making. Posits that the nature of small firms' formalised buying procedures requires more research, as they are often marginalised with regard to important areas of market information such as that provided by agents and vendors. Summarises that the role of specialisation of the parts of the organisation and the complex interaction between these parts needs further study.

Abstract

This article begins by examining the nature of marketing as applicable to charitable organisations. It goes on to discuss how charitable organisations are extending their use of marketing practices. A survey of market research agencies is presented, which indicates the extent to which charitable organisations seek professional support for marketing decisions, and the main types of problem for which help is sought. The final contention is that even with extensive constraints on the operations of charitable organisations, there is great potential to improve marketing performance by the development of an appropriate marketing information system.

Abstract

It has often been said that a great part of the strength of Aslib lies in the fact that it brings together those whose experience has been gained in many widely differing fields but who have a common interest in the means by which information may be collected and disseminated to the greatest advantage. Lists of its members have, therefore, a more than ordinary value since they present, in miniature, a cross‐section of institutions and individuals who share this special interest.

Abstract

Against Internet, argues the case for a cheaper, lower cost, easier to use network (K‐12) for educational use. Stresses the need for teachers to be technically literate. Abstract

Recently, the Department of Labour’s Fairpay Overtime Initiative was enacted to revamp the previous Fair Labour Standards Act (FLSA) rules governing employee overtime benefits. This legislation is a significant departure from the past regulations in determining overtime eligibility. In an effort to clarify these new FLSA guidelines, the authors have prepared a detailed model, outlining the process necessary to establish an employee’s exempt/non‐exempt status. Particular attention is apid to the process of correctly classifying employees by recommending the use of functional job analysis procedures in order to administer the newly created job duties test. Comments are then made about some shortcomings of the legislation and issues for managers to consider.
