Abstract

This article describes the application of pattern thinking to strategy. Patterns provide a powerful discipline to see order beneath the surface chaos. Pattern thinking can help entrepreneurs, managers, investors, and key talent to anticipate the likely direction of changes even before they happen. It reveals the economic meaning of these changes and provides the tools to capitalize on them. The authors report on groundbreaking research into over 200 companies in 40 industries, and they cite several examples of companies which have profited from analyzing their opportunities according to the profit pattern matrix.

Abstract

Recently, I was asked to be the technical editor for a book that purported to put in one volume all the knowledge gained from an MBA program. Since a typical MBA program requires two full years of study, this was an ambitious undertaking. Always up for a challenge, I decided to give it a look. First, I skimmed through the text. The section that caught my attention, and stopped me for a closer read, was the one on strategic planning.

Abstract

Another measure of people‐centered management is turnover, particularly turnover among full‐time employees at key career stages. Gordon Bethune, the CEO of Continental Airlines and the person who restored its service culture, finds useful data on employee purchases at the company store of items marked with the firm's logo. Particularly informative, he says, are changes in the levels of those purchases. He is right. Employees at firms where loyalty is building are … more likely to want to identify with the firm by wearing company‐logo T‐shirts or using company‐logo coffee mugs or pens. The number of suggestions for improvements made can be a useful indicator, as is the number of job applicants referred by employees. An organization that puts its people first will find that its people put the organization first, as a place to work that they feel they can recommend to their friends and colleagues.

Abstract

Corporations are turning to those commercial real estate professionals who are customer oriented and quality driven to represent them throughout the process of aligning the real estate needs to the driving force(s) within the company and/or business unit. This relates to value‐added services from consulting in the strategic planning phase to advising in the process of the lease renewal/relocation, purchase/built‐to‐suit . . . along with the requisite negotiating and move management services. Quality is becoming a competitive weapon. A service provider’s success depends on being perceptive to their customer’s needs and being able to link the client’s expectations with the firm’s service capabilities. This paper reviews the total quality management (TQM) philosophy with its customer‐centric thinking and in relation to the tenant‐representation process.

Abstract

President Bill Clinton has had many opponents and enemies, most of whom come from the political right wing. Clinton supporters contend that these opponents, throughout the Clinton presidency, systematically have sought to undermine this president with the goal of bringing down his presidency and running him out of office; and that they have sought non‐electoral means to remove him from office, including Travelgate, the death of Deputy White House Counsel Vincent Foster, the Filegate controversy, and the Monica Lewinsky matter. This bibliography identifies these and other means by presenting citations about these individuals and organizations that have opposed Clinton. The bibliography is divided into five sections: General; “The conspiracy stream of conspiracy commerce”, a White House‐produced “report” presenting its view of a right‐wing conspiracy against the Clinton presidency; Funding; Conservative organizations; and Publishing/media. Many of the annotations note the links among these key players.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a profile of Dave Morrison.

Design/methodology/approach

In this case study, Dave provides a short biography of his background and is then interviewed by Jerome.

Findings

Dave has had two careers. The first as a scaffolder. The second as a nursing assistant in mental health services. He has ended up bruised and battered in both.

Research limitations/implications

Every case study tells a different story. The effects of stress can be cumulative.

Practical implications

There are many accounts of how hospitalisation has traumatised service users. Yet, working in these services can also be traumatic for the care staff.

Social implications

Professor Tony Butterworth used to say “Happy nurse equals happy patient”. If you look after staff needs, they will provide better care. Have we ever really looked after the needs of mental health-care staff?

Originality/value

Dave’s story is unique. As Nicola Adams says, “Fall down eight times, get up nine”. Dave has fallen down many more times than this. Eventually, it gets harder to get back up.

Abstract

The aim of this article is an analysis of the links between race and psychotic illness, psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, as well as psychiatric, police and prison violence against people with mental health problems. The analysis focuses on Black men who are more frequently diagnosed with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders and who face more brutal treatment than other people with such diagnoses. We have adopted a multidisciplinary approach which draws insights from psychiatry, psychology, and sociology and challenges the biologistic interpretation of “mental illness.” We take into account the United States and Britain – two countries with large Black minorities and an established tradition of research on these groups. Among the crucial findings of this study are the facts that racial bias and stereotypes heavily influence the way Black men with a diagnosis of psychotic illness are treated by the psychiatric system, police and prison staff, and that the dominant approach to psychosis masks the connections between racism and mental health.
