Abstract

Sooner or later you will probably want your PC to do something that you don't have a program for. Maybe you will want it to print custom purchase orders, draw a map of the library's service area, or calculate special statistics.

Abstract

PC users who have a hard disk face an interesting dilemma: how to keep track of all the files in the directory. Did you ever try to pick out a single file as names whiz by on the screen? Or did you ever try to figure out which files go with which programs? It can be pretty confusing.

Abstract

Teeny Type is a combination of condensed and superscript dot matrix type styles with narrow line spacing. It can be used for labeling small objects such as slides, contents of disks, etc. These directions for creating Teeny Type are for Epson printers but will work on some other models also. You can create Teeny Type with your OCLC Terminal Software and, if you want to use it with other programs, directions for creating a batch file are also given. [Editor: Another method that produces much the same results was described in OCLC Micro, vol. 1, no. 4, on p. 34. None of these methods will work with a daisy‐wheel type letter quality printer, nor will they work if you have set the DIP switches on your dot matrix printer to near‐letter‐quality printing.

Abstract

Cimtech, the British Centre for Information Media & Technology (formerly NRCd) has produced a guide to the range of optical storage devices coming on to the market. The report is aimed very much at the user and provides a practical assessment of the impact optical storage will have on all in the information, storage, retrieval and dissemination business.

Abstract

WELCOME TO M300 and PC REPORT With the selection by OCLC of the IBM Personal Computer as its system's workstation, library technical processing and management activity will increasingly depend upon that hardware. Adoption of the IBM by the Washington Library Network, by major academic libraries for public terminal access to computerized local catalogs as well as for microcomputer centers, and by library supply agencies for software development makes the IBM PC the overwhelming microcomputer choice for all types of libraries.

Abstract

If your hard disk is (soon to be) installed, you're ready to learn about hard disk management. In this article, I'll attempt to briefly define hard disk management and why it's important. I'll outline one method of organizing a hard disk and explain each step. I've included a short glossary of terms that may not be familiar and a bibliography of several articles that present different approaches to the same process (I found Nieburg's article especially helpful). When you've completed this article, I hope you'll have a clearer understanding of what a hard disk can do for you and what you must do to achieve that usefulness. If you choose to follow me step‐by‐step, you'll also have a menu‐driven hard disk system that can manage your functional requirements easily.

Abstract

If I had about $150,000 extra in my budget this year I'd probably be in the market for a fancy Integrated Online Library System and a nice new minicomputer. Unfortunately, all I've got is free time…dBase III and an M300 Personal Computer. The intent of this article is to show exactly how powerful these special resources and tools can be.
