Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the conceptual distinction of two clothing orientations – style orientation and fashion orientation. Style and fashion orientations both express identity and individuality, but the fashion orientation may more strongly reflect materialistic values, which extensive evidence shows are detrimental to well-being. This study investigates how the clothing orientations are associated with materialism and subjective well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

The conceptual distinction between style and fashion orientations and their associations with materialism and subjective well-being were investigated via an online survey (N = 4,591) conducted in Germany, Poland, Sweden and the USA. Participants aged 18–65 were recruited based on national representative quotas for age, gender, education and region.

Findings

The regression results support a conceptual distinction between the style and fashion orientation. Style orientation was positively associated with subjective well-being compared to fashion orientation. Both the style and fashion orientations were positively correlated with materialism, but the association was much stronger for fashion orientation and materialism exhibited a strong negative association with subjective well-being. Interestingly, materialism moderated the association between fashion orientation and well-being but not between style orientation and well-being.

Research limitations/implications

The four examined countries were Western, and, thus, the findings cannot be generalized to other populations. In addition, this study specifically examined relationships in a clothing context. To enable wider generalization, the relationships tested must be explored in other countries, especially non-Western, and also across other product categories.

Practical implications

The findings of this study can help retailers develop their marketing programs, product and service offerings and specifically their communications more closely targeted to consumers’ clothing orientations.

Originality/value

This study contributes by conceptually distinguishing between clothing style and fashion orientations and investigating their divergent associations to materialism and subjective well-being. This research also raises the question of whether fashion orientation is independent or rather, an aspect of materialism, which has implications for other consumption domains as well.

Abstract

An emerging perspective on market orientation suggests that strategic insights may be gained when firms take into account their customers’ view on the organization’s level of market orientation. Recent research offers evidence on the applicability of a customer‐defined market orientation construct, and the existence of a gap between suppliers’ and customers’ evaluations of the supplier’s extent of market orientation. Extends this line of research by exploring the market orientation gap and its outcomes in a relationship‐marketing context. Specifically, explores the importance of such a gap for the relationship. Reviews a number of theoretical viewpoints as to why multiple perspectives should be sought when assessing organizational phenomena such as market orientation. Then tests the impact that a perceptual market orientation gap between business service providers and their customers has on customer satisfaction. The findings suggest that the greater the divergence in perceptions of market orientation between customers and service providers, the lower the level of customer satisfaction. Explores the research and managerial implications of these findings and offers strategies as to how to “mind the gap”.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of parents and other adults in preventing and facilitating teen binge drinking.

Design/methodology/approach

Teens' discussions on internet websites were accessed to examine their opinions of their alcohol‐related interactions with adults.

Findings

The results show that in the context of a western society such as Australia, the role of adults in endorsing a culture of excessive alcohol consumption may be considerable.

Practical implications

Social marketing campaigns are needed to sensitise adults to this situation and outline strategies that can be used by adults to reduce negative impacts and enhance their potential to reduce alcohol consumption among young people.

Originality/value

Previous research into teenagers' alcohol consumption behaviours has focused on self‐reports obtained via surveys or focus groups. Such data collection processes are likely to be subject to considerable social desirability bias. The present study demonstrates that the internet can constitute a valuable alternative source of data relating to young people's engagement in unhealthy behaviours and the factors impacting their decisions to enact these behaviours.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to analyze the impact of involuntary frugality and deliberate frugality on the household intentions to adopt energy-efficient and energy-generating products. Additionally, the study aims to explore the role of motivation to save as a mediating factor between different types of frugality and the adoption of different kinds of energy products.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved a survey of 413 households, gathering information through questionnaires from both tier I and tier II urban areas in India. The investigation used confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling with Amos to explore the impact of frugality and also mediating impacts of motivation to save on the correlation between different forms of frugality (involuntary and deliberate) and the desire to acquire energy-efficient and energy-producing goods. This methodology facilitated a thorough examination of how various levels of frugality impact the uptake of sustainable energy solutions, with a specific emphasis on the fundamental motivational drivers behind these choices.

Findings

The study uncovers specific connections between various forms of frugality and the desire to embrace energy-efficient and energy-producing items. Unintentional frugality, characterized by sensitivity to prices, is shown to have a positive correlation with the adoption of energy-efficient devices but a negative association with the intention to adopt energy-generating products. Conversely, intentional frugality, distinguished by deliberate reduction actions, positively impacts the inclination to adopt both energy-efficient and energy-generating products. The results suggest that the mediating impact of motivation for savings varies depending on the type of frugality and the class of energy products being considered, emphasizing the subtle ways in which frugality influences sustainable consumption behaviors.

Research limitations/implications

The contrasting effects of involuntary and voluntary frugality on the adoption of energy-efficient versus energy-generating products highlight the need to explore the underlying psychological and economic mechanisms. Future research should investigate the factors influencing the preferences of price-sensitive and deliberate frugal consumers towards this energy-efficient and energy-generating products.

Social implications

Policymakers should develop specific subsidies and financial strategies for low-income households and incentive programs for conscientious consumers. Educational campaigns emphasizing the benefits of energy-generating goods and creating incentive structures with tax advantages, refunds and financial aid are essential. Companies should continue to emphasize cost savings for energy-efficient appliances and consider leasing or instalment plans for energy-generating products to appeal to price-sensitive consumers.

Originality/value

Literature shows that 82% of Indians prefer frugality to conserve energy through reduced consumption. However, consumer motivations for frugality vary. This study analyses the distinct impacts of involuntary and voluntary frugality on adopting energy-efficient and energy-generating products, offering a nuanced understanding of consumer behavior in sustainability—a topic underexplored in existing research. Additionally, this study investigates the role of the motivation to save as a mediator between frugality and energy product adoption, providing a novel perspective on how different frugality motivations influence different category of energy products.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the key factors that influence household pro-environmental behaviors (HPEBs) and explore the differences caused by the same influencing factors between household waste management behavior (HWM) and household energy-saving behavior (HES).

Design/methodology/approach

A meta-analysis was conducted on 90 articles about HPEBs published between 2009 and 2023 to find the key factors. HPEBs were further categorized into HWM and HES to investigate the difference influenced by the above factors on two behaviors. The correlation coefficient was used as the unified effect size, and the random-effect model was adopted to conduct both main effect and moderating effect tests.

Findings

The results showed that attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control all positively influenced intention and HPEBs, but their effects were stronger on intention than on HPEBs. Intention was found to be the strongest predictor of HPEBs. Subjective norms were found to have a more positive effect on HES compared to HWM, while habits had a more positive effect on HWM. Furthermore, household size was negatively correlated with HWM but positively correlated with HES.

Originality/value

The same variables have different influences on HWM and HES. These results can help develop targeted incentives to increase the adoption of HPEBs, ultimately reducing household energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to the mitigation of global warming.

Abstract

Purpose

A range of adaptations and therapy processes have been explored in relation to therapy with people with intellectual disabilities; however, there remain a few areas of therapy practice that have not yet been considered in depth. This study aims to report the results of an online survey of the practice of therapists working with people with intellectual disabilities in managing endings in therapy.

Design/methodology/approach

Thirty-one therapists working with people with intellectual disabilities responded to an online survey. The data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.

Findings

Three superordinate themes were identified: Theme 1 was “preparing for a therapeutic ending” with subordinate themes of “planning early”, “providing boundaries” and “validating feelings”; Theme 2 was “providing a therapeutic ending”, with subordinate themes of “a collaborative decision” and “fostering growth”; and the third theme was “post-ending issues” in which participants acknowledged a “spectrum of emotion”, and, in the case of difficult endings, a sense of “unfinished business”.

Originality/value

This is the first systematic exploration of therapy endings as described by therapists working with people with intellectual disabilities. The authors discuss implications for practice and further areas of research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a more holistic approach to analysing the impact of all the behaviour of a conflict's participants its overall dynamics, using the example of the Northern Irish troubles.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel multivariate time series approach developed by Professor Paul Smoker is presented which can map the dynamics of this conflict and its causal inferences as a series or “systemograms”.

Findings

The case example reveals high levels of autocorrelation in the variety of techniques used by the state security authorities to suppress terrorism, indicating their strong role in maintaining this conflict. When more than one party exhibits such behaviour, the conflict “locks in”.

Research limitations/implications

The work remains preliminary and historical. Data was collected on a month‐by‐month basis which suggests associated rather than direct causal influence. It would be useful to further explore these findings using data from similar conflicts.

Practical implications

Suggests that some counter‐terrorism approaches may be dysfunctional especially those adopting sub‐lethal weapons. Provides some insight into behavioural changes required to prevent conflict destabilisation.

Originality/value

Provides a novel conflict research methodology which allows the strong structural dynamics of the conflict to be seen – much the way that elapsed time photography enables hidden processes to be revealed. The raw statistics are presented here.

Abstract

Research suggests that prison‐based therapeutic communities (TCs) have a positive impact on inmates and recidivism. This study sought to establish the benefits of being in a prison‐based TC rather than a normal wing. A semi‐structured interview was conducted with an inmate on the TC at HMP Wymott in Lancashire and then analysed using thematic analysis.Eight themes emerged, suggesting that TCs are a better environment with better interpersonal relationships, have more help available, are safer, are more structured and hierarchical, have groups and group work, are more challenging, provide confrontational assistance and have various incentive schemes. Such factors brought real benefits to the research participant.Research on the efficacy of TCs is considered, as are the implications of this study's findings for the future of prison‐based TCs. Despite the positive findings, they should nonetheless be cautiously applied.
