Abstract
Purpose
To summarise a key development that provides clarity for banks on the operation of the money laundering provisions in the UK Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.
Design/methodology/approach
The article provides the background leading up to the UK Court of Appeal hearing, the key issues in the appeal, the decision of the court and what this means for banks in the UK.
Findings
The Court of Appeal held that (i) where a bank suspects that money in its customer’s account is criminal property, freezes the account and seeks consent to deal with the money, the court should not intervene during the course of the seven-working-day notice period and 31-day Moratorium Period and (ii) in most cases the discretion to grant an interim declaration is unlikely to be exercised.
Practical implications
This decision is important for banks and brings much-needed clarity. Prior to the Court of Appeal decision, it was open to customers to challenge a bank’s decision to freeze an account (pending a response from the NCA to a consent request) on the basis that, on a balance of convenience, payments from a bank account should be permitted to be made.
Originality/value
Practical guidance from an experienced lawyer specialising in complex investigations, litigation dispute resolution and regulatory enforcement proceedings for financial institutions and large corporations.

Abstract
Purpose
Crowdsourcing refers to a new business model in which enterprises or individuals publish tasks or problems, attracting freelancers or contributors to participate in solving tasks, submitting bids and allowing task seekers to choose the final solution. How to attract more quantity and quality of contributors to submit their solutions through a crowdsourcing platform has become a vital question.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, the authors use web crawling to obtain 43,265 effective tasks in EPWK website (www.epwk.com) to probe how to elevate the quantity and quality of contributors via task reward design. This study uses the hierarchical linear model to probe the research questions.
Findings
Results show that, with the increase of task reward, the quantity of contributors goes up first and then goes down (inverted U shape), whereas the quality of contributors goes down first and then goes up (U sharp). Moreover, the authors investigate the moderating effects of another task design attribute, task duration. This study finds that task duration weakens the effect of task reward on the quantity of contributors while strengthening the effects of task reward on the quality of contributors.
Originality/value
First, this study theoretically probes two key aspects of task performance, namely, the quantity and quality of contributors, which expand the scope of task performance evaluation. Second, this study reconciles previous concern about the relationship of task reward and performance, which is different from previous studies that have paid more attention to the single perspective of their relationship. Finally, the authors investigate the moderating effects of task duration, which further uncover the mechanism behind task reward and performance, that is, the quantity and quality of task contributors.

Purpose
In the past decade, financial austerity has brought significant pressure upon emergency services in the UK. For the British Government, one approach to alleviate this pressure was to increase collaborative efforts in core functions (e.g. information systems and technology) between multiple organisations. Despite the consensus that collaborations are key in addressing complex problems, the majority fail or become discontinued. This research explores the development of collaborative information infrastructures between one Police Force and two Fire and Rescue Services in the UK, with a specific focus on how the difference in culture, identities and rules and norms, can work in a collaborative emergency service environment.
Design/methodology/approach
This study investigated an example of successful development of a collaborative information infrastructure within the context of public safety and, specifically, the technology-based structures that underpin information management. A case study approach was taken, combining semi-structured interviews, document analysis and site visits. The study used activity theory as a theoretical and analytical framework.
Findings
The research revealed that creating a shared identity is not essential in emergency services collaboration, and organisations may maintain their separate identity, given they address other elements of the activity system (e.g. leadership, motivated subjects). However, pursuing this strategy will create multiple tensions throughout the collaboration process.
Originality/value
The study contributes to the information systems literature concerning inter-organisational collaborations in the public sector providing a novel view to the implications of maintaining separate identities, and the significance of misalignment between interacting activity systems.

Case study builds upon Kay Whitehead’s detailed empirical work with respect to South Australia. Equally pertinent is Whitehead’s and Thorpe’s analysis of historical discourses of ‘vocation, career and character’ as constituting a ?matrix of subjectivity’ against which individuals construct their teacher‐selves. My methodological and conceptual approach is also informed by those historically‐situated ‘narrative inquiries’ collected in Weiler and Middleton’s book, Telling Women’s Lives, and Cunningham and Gardner’s ‘life histories’ of UK teachers in the years 1907‐1950.The authors use personal accounts (oral and written) as a major source for examining the ways in which twentieth‐century teachers constructed their own subjectivities within the context of dominant practices, institutions and discourses. Such studies give voice to women in education whose lives historians in the past have deemed insignificant ‐ none more so than the vast majority of ‘ordinary’ female classroom teachers with whom this article is centrally concerned. Thus I similarly use the privately‐printed teaching memoirs of Gladys E. Ward (Present, Miss: the story of a teacher’s life in the outback and in the city), reading the representations of herself as a ‘career teacher’ in the Primary Branch of the South Australian Education Department against the contemporary local discourses of women in teaching which framed her narrative.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the development of understanding of the social processes involved in business engagement and understanding of the role of knowledge transfer practitioners. It is also to provide the first outlines of a theoretical framework of business engagement between higher education institutions and business, through the lens of complexity theory.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper draws on research that explored the actions of a group of actors within a university Business School as they attempted to develop a range of business engagement activities. The data were analysed using a narrative event sequence methodology designed to deal systematically with the relationship between events occurring over time. The events were linked into a progression to create temporal maps which provided the basis for data collection and conceptual analysis.
Findings
A space of possibilities was created by participants in the faculty to engage with industry that was adjacent to the teaching and learning space. The adjacent space set out to provide the business development team different expectations they could exploit to generate new interactions beyond the boundaries of the teaching and learning space. It was for the business development team to exploit the generative potential of the adjacent space by creating emergent events which developed halting as a non‐linear progression that juxtaposed extinction and emergent events. In their interactions the business development managers had continually to reconcile the tension between compliance and generative potential through use of individual judgement.
Practical implications
In developing business engagement activity consideration should be given to the contradictory world the business development managers act within and the constraints they experience. Through the examination of the events, lessons can be learned that enhance the generative potential of the business development manager.
Originality/value
The theoretical outline of this paper provides an initial framework within which to examine the role of the business development manager.

Introduces a heuristic framework to help westerners compare and contrast management in the People′s Republic of China (PRC) with the West. Western educators and consultants participating in management development programmes in the PRC have reported difficulties in understanding the realities of managing in the PRC, encouraging trainee participation, organizing effective group discussion among trainees, joining efforts with PRC faculty, and overcoming frustration caused by inefficient administrative support. Explores the causes for these difficulties by examining the differences between the PRC and the West in terms of pedagogy, classroom culture, attitudes towards foreigners, and research orientation. Offers examples and recommendations to westerners who hope to contribute more effectively to the PRC′s management development.

Abstract
This article looks at the attitudes and perceptions that young offenders have of dental health and services prior to and during their time at a Young Offenders’ Institution in the North East of England. The recent incorporation of prison health services into National Health Service (NHS) structures and funding arrangements brings with it statutory responsibilities concerning the amount and equivalence of health care in and out of prison settings. It also requires evaluation of services in comparable ways. Prison health in general and prison dental health in particular have previously been isolated from mainstream NHS health care in terms of both practice and research. The results from this study highlight the need for those responsible for dental health services at all penal institutions to examine the levels of provision they provide and how the perspectives of this marginalized and vulnerable group can be taken into account in the planning and improvement of services.
