Abstract

Purpose

The infrastructure for supplying information resources to higher education and research has gone through dramatic changes during the last 15 years. The amount of electronic resources available and library systems that handle them have multiplied leaving libraries in a challenging situation. There is a changing definition of library collections, changing business models for owning and accessing materials as well as a shift in the architecture of library systems. As new unified services for libraries, where information resources and systems are merged, there is a need for libraries to re‐evaluate the current situation and what led up to it. The evaluation is still in progress but this paper seeks to summarize Chalmers' evaluation so far, highlighting key findings, trends and possible strategies for the future.

Design/methodology/approach

Chalmers University Library has initiated a system survey with the ambition of reviewing current workflows, quantifying and defining the crucial elements of today's systems with the goal of finding what is actually needed in the near future.

Findings

The process of mapping out the current systems situation, looking at usage statistics and emerging technologies/trends has helped the library in identifying different strategies for facing the next generation of library systems.

Practical implications

Libraries looking for a migration path to a library services platform can use the Chalmers case study to benchmark and compare situations. The library system landscape is shared by many in similar situations all trying to figure out when and if to migrate their systems.

Originality/value

The Chalmers case study is an assessment of the library system landscape for one library. When mapped out the drawbacks of dealing with multiple information silos and trying to push and pull data between systems is apparent. There is a real need for change based on current workflows.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a hybrid model of library software development, according to which libraries implement commercial software products and extend them with locally developed or community developed open‐source components.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws on the following sources to describe several approaches to providing software that addresses the specific needs of individual libraries: commercial and community organizations' public statements of aims, philosophies, policies, and processes; e‐mail interviews; and e‐mail discussion lists. Data from a customer‐accessed collaborative web site are offered in an examination of the approach taken by one vendor, Ex Libris, to developing and supporting systems that customers can extend, customize, and integrate with other systems.

Findings

A little more than a year after the Ex Libris open‐platform program was launched, active community interaction in the creation and sharing of code extensions to the vendor's commercial systems was observed.

Practical implications

Community initiatives, a long part of the library tradition, are becoming common in library software development. Very few libraries have the resources required to carry out large software projects; however, by leveraging the resources of the community to develop and exchange code that enhances and customizes commercial solutions, all libraries, regardless of their resources, stand to benefit from commercial solutions in a cost‐effective way.

Originality/value

Libraries that are in the market for a software solution and are comparing commercial products with open‐source initiatives can benefit from this description of a hybrid model in which libraries maximize their investment in a commercial product by leveraging their staff's expertise and community support.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this article is to discuss how the research on innovation in the small businesses may be operationalized. This paper discusses the field's concepts, typologies, units of analysis and the general basic assumptions pertaining to the operationalization of innovation research in small businesses.

Design/methodology/approach

The article is an essay, whose format aims to provide the reader with reflections and multiple questions, by instigating the free thinking, the research as well as the construction of different ideas and/or perceptions in a logical and scientific way (Meneghetti, 2011). Thus, a conceptual approach for the operationalization of the innovation research in small businesses is proposed and discussed.

Findings

Most of the innovation literature has ignored the small businesses, so that its core concepts and basic assumptions should be reviewed in an inclusive approach. The authors developed an analytical proposal that consists of a four-step logical approach to researching innovation in small businesses, starting from the innovation's concept as something important and then evolving to discussing how one has to try and see the small business as an object of study.

Originality/value

The value of this paper lies with the attempt to critically bring the small businesses into the spotlight, as study them has practical and theoretical implications that go beyond the field of innovation itself.

Abstract

Purpose

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a broad conceptual framework in the social sciences that have only recently been studied within criminology. The purpose of this paper is to utilize this framework by applying it to one of the most potentially dangerous forensic populations.

Design/methodology/approach

Archival data from 225 federal sex offenders was used to perform descriptive, correlational, and negative binomial regression models.

Findings

There was substantial evidence of ACEs including father abandonment/neglect (36 percent), physical abuse (nearly 28 percent), verbal/emotional abuse (more than 24 percent), and sexual abuse (approximately 27 percent). The mean age of sexual victimization was 7.6 years with the youngest age of victimization occurring at the age of 3. Offenders averaged nearly five paraphilias, the most common were pedophilia (57 percent), pornography addiction (43 percent), paraphilia not otherwise specified (35 percent), exhibitionism (26 percent), and voyeurism (21 percent). The offenders averaged 4.7 paraphilias and the range was substantial (0 to 19). Negative binomial regression models indicated that sexual sadism was positively and pornography addiction was negatively associated with serious criminal violence. Offenders with early age of arrest onset and more total arrest charges were more likely to perpetrate kidnaping, rape, and murder.

Originality/value

ACEs are common in the life history of federal sex offenders, but have differential associations with the most serious forms of crime.

In this chapter, we review empirical research evidence on the relationship between stressors and catecholamines (i.e., adrenaline and noradrenaline) and cortisol. With respect to acute stressors, both laboratory and field research have shown that the exposure to stressors leads to an increase in catecholamine and cortisol levels. With respect to more chronic stressors, research evidence is less consistent. Chronic mental workload was found to be related to elevated adrenaline levels. With respect to cortisol responses the interaction between workload and other variables seems to play a role. Empirical studies suggest that chronic stressors affect the responsivity to acute stressors. Research showed that after the exposure to stressors catecholamine and cortisol recovery is delayed.

Abstract

Purpose

There is a growing research interest in the relationships between networks and the firm’s assets and between networks and innovation. Studies have shown the complexity and idiosyncrasies of these relationships for firms in clusters. The way firms in clusters build certain organizational resources and capabilities, however, remains underexplored. Based on the assumption that most of these organizational assets rely on human resources, the purpose of this paper is to shed light on the mechanisms through which a set of managerial practices (the human resource management (HRM) system) enhances innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Micro-level data were collected for 139 firms located in three Spanish industrial clusters. Next, the main constructs were developed. A multiple mediator model was then used to examine how HRM systems influence innovation through strategic vision, embeddedness in local networks, the implementation of enterprise systems, and cluster characteristics.

Findings

The effect of HRM systems on innovation performance was indirect rather than direct. All four mediating variables included in the model were found to be relevant mechanisms through which HRM systems affect innovation performance. The statistical significance of these variables, however, varied depending on the type of innovation (product, process, organizational, or marketing).

Practical implications

Greater attention should be paid to the structure and sophistication of HRM systems. Top-level managers should be aware of the linkages between HRM systems and mediators. Greater human resource orientation in strategic planning, enterprise system design, and networking practices reinforces the association between HRM systems and innovation.

Originality/value

This study advances our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the relationship between HRM systems and innovation. From an academic perspective, this study enriches the cluster literature by better integrating human resources with innovation processes. Furthermore, this study creates research opportunities by disentangling the role of different managerial practices and refining the operationalization of the mediating variables. The findings can also help managers develop human resources and innovation strategies.
