Abstract

Purpose

To discuss US, EU and UK tax-related issues that sovereign wealth funds should consider when investing in private funds.

Design/methodology/approach

Discusses various tax-related structuring, operational, risk-allocation, and economic matters that private funds, sovereign wealth funds and other non-US institutional investors should consider a series when evaluating potential private fund investments.

Findings

Despite the market disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, sovereign wealth funds continued to make significant capital commitments to private funds in 2020 and, as the world emerges from the pandemic, are expected to make similar or greater commitments in 2021 and beyond.

Originality/value

Practical guidance from lawyers with wide experience in international tax planning and investment fund structuring.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the air movement operations planning heuristic in the literature to generate better solutions in a shorter time period.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a rigorous design of experiments (DOEs), we make significant heuristic improvements by evaluating alternative modular methodologies and tuning heuristic parameters for two scenarios. This includes a new approach to considering refueling operations.

Findings

We find the fine-tuned heuristic averages a 33% objective improvement and 70% reduction in computation time over the heuristic with original parameters for one of the scenarios. Additionally, we analyze the heuristic's quality of solution over time.

Research limitations/implications

Further analysis is required to generalize heuristic settings, which would require significant access to operational data or a portfolio of scenarios of interest.

Practical implications

Tuned heuristic parameters reduce the computation time from hours to minutes. This also makes it practically feasible to adjust parameters in the objective function to generate multiple courses of action (COAs) for a given instance.

Originality/value

This research provides novel vehicle assignment and routing heuristic improvement alternatives and demonstrates a DOEs-based heuristic tuning procedure.

Abstract

The Bureau of Economics in the Federal Trade Commission has a three-part role in the Agency and the strength of its functions changed over time depending on the preferences and ideology of the FTC’s leaders, developments in the field of economics, and the tenor of the times. The over-riding current role is to provide well considered, unbiased economic advice regarding antitrust and consumer protection law enforcement cases to the legal staff and the Commission. The second role, which long ago was primary, is to provide reports on investigations of various industries to the public and public officials. This role was more recently called research or “policy R&D”. A third role is to advocate for competition and markets both domestically and internationally. As a practical matter, the provision of economic advice to the FTC and to the legal staff has required that the economists wear “two hats,” helping the legal staff investigate cases and provide evidence to support law enforcement cases while also providing advice to the legal bureaus and to the Commission on which cases to pursue (thus providing “a second set of eyes” to evaluate cases). There is sometimes a tension in those functions because building a case is not the same as evaluating a case. Economists and the Bureau of Economics have provided such services to the FTC for over 100 years proving that a sub-organization can survive while playing roles that sometimes conflict. Such a life is not, however, always easy or fun.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter presents a novel visualisation tool, known as Flexible Integrated Transport Services (FITS) that transport commissioners, providers and administrators could employ to specify and edit the operating constraints as they redesign transport services.

Design/methodology/approach

The context of rural transport planning is discussed noting that where resources are fewer, effective co-ordination is required to provide passengers with efficient transport services. An overview of the FITS visualisation tool and its different sub-systems (e.g. general information regarding services, operating area, passenger eligibility, fare structure and surcharge structure) is given. Additionally, some key computational details of the system are discussed. Preliminary results of a sample case study that trialled the FITS tool in a specific test run, using simulated transport to health data in the Morayshire and North-West Aberdeenshire area of Scotland are presented. The concluding discussion considers the potential impact of employing tools like FITS in planning transport services in rural and low-demand settings.

Findings

Results from the case study show how these effects could be quantified in terms of changes in costs incurred by transport providers, the level of potential demand that could be covered and the associated revenues (fares and subsidies) which could be generated by providers.

Originality/value

The FITS visualisation tool has the potential to act as a planning tool to help transport commissioners, providers and administrators visualise the effects of shifting operating boundaries of flexible transport services.

Abstract

This study uses parametric hazard models to investigate duration dependence in US stock market cycles over the January 1929 through December 1992 period. Market cycles are determined using the Beveridge‐Nelson (1981) approach to the decomposition of economic time series. The results show that both real and nominal cycles exhibit positive duration dependence. The implication of this finding is that actual prices revert to their permanent or trend level in a non‐random manner as the cyclical component dissipates over time. This process is consistent with mean reversion in price and suggests that predictable periodicity in market cycles may exist. Only limited evidence is obtained that discrete shifts or trends in mean cycle duration exist. The length of market cycles appears not to have changed over the 1929–92 period.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand consumer reactions to security breaches and the best approach for companies to minimize the reputational damage that is done.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors assessed trust in a company following a data breach as well as perceptions of individual and corporate responsibility for data security and also measured individual personality.

Findings

The authors found that individuals held companies more responsible for protecting private data and held companies even more responsible following a data breach. Further, perception of responsibility for a data breach significantly affected individuals’ response to a company’s attempt to rebuild trust. Finally, participant personality impacted perceptions of responsibility and trust in a company after a data breach.

Research limitations/implications

Companies are held more responsible for protecting private data than are individuals. Thus, violation of this expectation insofar as a data breach may result in a psychological contract breach which explains reductions in trust in a company which has experienced a data breach. Further, the effect of company’s responses to a data breach depends on individuals’ perception of responsibility and personality. Thus, the best course of action following a data breach may vary across customers.

Practical implications

Companies should consider differences in customer perceptions when responding to a data breach.

Social implications

Individuals differ in how responsible they feel a company is for data security. Further, those differences impact reactions to data breach responses from companies.

Originality/value

This paper explored personality as it impacts perceptions of corporate responsibility in data security. Further, the authors explore the role of perception of responsibility to determine the role of psychological contract breach in reduced trust after data breach.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumer marketing suggests that greater concern for the environment is impacting purchase behavior. Recent surveys into US pro-environmental (PE) purchase patterns show a considerable gap between consumers’ attitude and actual behavior regarding PE products. What these products have in common is a normative component. This research aims to understand whether perceived consumer effectiveness (PCE) and social desirability bias (SDB) influence consumers’ purchase decisions regarding PE wine products and willingness to pay (WTP).

Design/methodology/approach

To assess whether PCE and SDB influence consumer’s actual WTP for PE and conventional wine despite normative beliefs (NBs), two studies with sample sizes of 117 and 124 were conducted in the USA. The first part of each study involved surveying participants as to their NB, SDB, PCE and demographics. The second part of the study measured their actual WTP through participation in an experimental auction.

Findings

Consumers with high levels of NBs were significantly more likely to pay higher premiums for PE wines compared to non-PE wines and had higher levels of PCE, suggesting that they believe their purchase behavior makes a difference to the environment. However, this same group is strongly influenced by SDB, indicating that they may “over-report” desirable behaviors. Controlling for PCE and SDB, the significant difference in price for PE wine and non-PE wine was mitigated. Those with lower NBs were just the opposite, less concerned whether their purchase behavior directly impacts the environment, feeling that non-PE wine may be a better value proposition.

Research limitations/implications

The use of an auction method to assess actual behavior may be skewed by the attempt to get a winning bid, and this research was conducted in one particular part of the USA, which limits the generalizability of the results to other parts of the country or world.

Originality/value

The findings from the current research provide important information for wine producers, distributors and retailers, specifically the development of marketing and branding strategies, and as a method for normative product/brand differentiation in a competitive marketplace.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine how security statement certainty (overconfident, underconfident and realistic) and behavioral intentions of potential consumers impact the perceptions of companies in the presence or absence of a past security breach.

Design/methodology/approach

The study exposed participants to three types of security statements and randomly assigned them to the presence or absence of a previous breach. Participants then evaluated the company and generated a hypothetical password for that company.

Findings

This study found that the presence or absence of a previous breach had a large impact on company perceptions, but a minimal impact on behavioral intentions to be personally more secure.

Research limitations/implications

The authors found that the presence or absence of a previous breach had a large impact on company perceptions, but minimal impact on behavioral intentions to be personally more secure.

Practical implications

Companies need to be cautious about how much confidence they convey to consumers. Companies should not rely on consumers engaging in secure online practices, even following a breach.

Social implications

Companies need to communicate personal security behaviors to consumers in a way that still instills confidence in the company but encourages personal responsibility.

Originality/value

The confidence of company security statements and presence of a previous breach were examined for their impact on company perception and a novel dependent variable of password complexity.
