Abstract

Purpose

The tactile sensor with array structure normally has the defects of existing nondetection zone, complex and nonstretchable structure. It is difficult to seamlessly attach to the surface of the robot. For this reason, this paper proposes a method to prepare nonarray structure tactile sensor directly on the surface of the robot by spraying process.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the principle of gradient potential distribution, the potential fields are constructed in two different directions over the conductive film in time-sharing. The potentials at touching position in the two directions are detected to determine the coordinate of the touching point. The designed tactile sensor based on this principle consists of only three layers. Its bottom layer is designed as a weak conductive film made of graphite coating and used to construct the potential field. It can be sprayed either on PET substrate or directly on robot surface.

Findings

The radial basis function neural network is used for remodeling the potential distribution, which can effectively solve the problem of nonlinear potential distribution caused by irregular sensor shape, and uneven conductivity at different points of the spraying coating. The simulation and experimental results show that the principle of the proposed tactile sensor used for touching position detection is feasible to be applied to complex surfaces of the robot.

Originality/value

This paper proposed a nonarray customizable tactile sensor based on the spraying process. The sensor has a simple structure, and only five lead wires are needed to realize the coordinate detection of the touch position.

Abstract

Regional disparities in China have recently attracted the attention of economists both inside and outside China. In particular, researchers and policy makers are concerned with how economic reforms have affected regional disparities in China. As a result, there has been a boom in the literature. However, the exploding literature has so far presented conflicting results. The aim of this paper is to review the literature in this field and to present new evidence on income disparities in China’s regional economies. This study is based on the application of regional GDP figures covering the period of 1953‐1997. It attempts to assess and consolidate the findings from previous studies and hence contributes to the current debate.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new hybrid algorithm, named improved plant growth simulation algorithm and genetic hybrid algorithm (PGSA-GA), for solving structural optimization problems.

Design/methodology/approach

PGSA-GA is based on PGSA and three improved strategies, namely, elitist strategy of morphactin concentration calculation, strategy of intelligent variable step size and strategy of initial growth point selection based on GA. After a detailed formulation and explanation of its implementation, PGSA-GA is verified using the examples of typical truss and single-layer lattice shell.

Findings

Improved PGSA-GA was implemented and optimization was carried out for two typical optimization problems; then, a comparison was made between the PGSA-GA and other methods. The results show that the method proposed in the paper has the advantages of high efficiency and rapid convergence, which enable it to be used for the optimization of various types of steel structures.

Originality/value

Through the examples of typical truss and single-layer lattice shell, it shows that the optimization efficiency and effect of PGSA-GA are better than those of other algorithms and methods, such as GA, secondary optimization method, etc. The results show that PGSA-GA is quite suitable for structural optimization.
