Abstract

Focuses on Korean garment manufacturing and the feasibility and benefits of introducing an expert system. Reviews previous literature on knowledge‐based system and describes in detail the stages followed in developing, constructing, testing, evaluating, integrating, implementing and maintaining the expert system. Concludes that an expert system could be used to solve various garment manufacturing problems and would contribute to garment quality improvement through a standardized apparel production process.

Abstract

The AATCC grades of seam pucker do not provide sufficient information for analysing and solving the problems. Develops a new measurement system which redefines seam pucker with shape parameters and evaluates it using artificial intelligence. New standards of seam pucker with five shape parameters were developed. Shows that prediction and optimization for seam pucker are possible using these means. The system has already been employed in men’s suit manufacture.

Abstract

A garment technical drawing system and its database construction methodology is introduced in this paper. The system consists of an application program and a modulized database system. The advantage of this system is that it is possible to construct a garment's partial technical drawing easily using this database system, and it enables the combination of any part of drawing stored in the database.

Abstract

Purpose

The procedural justice theory of police legitimacy has been examined extensively by previous scholars; yet more expansion of the legitimacy literature is warranted. Specifically, the current study examines the effects of institutional trust and obligation to obey as mediators between procedural justice and perceived legitimacy.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study uses structural equation modeling (SEM) to test our hypotheses. Convenience sampling of South Korean university students (N = 2,188) was used to investigate our inquiry.

Findings

The results support our hypotheses in that while procedural justice was the primary predictor of legitimacy, institutional trust and obligation to obey were also significant mediators of procedural justice and perceived legitimacy.

Originality/value

A multitude of research examining various predictors of police legitimacy exists (e.g. Baker and Gau, 2018; Boateng and Buckner, 2019; Boateng et al., 2022; Lee and Lee, 2021; Lee et al., 2022, 2024; Lee and Kim, 2023; Nagin and Telep, 2017). More importantly, various researchers have concluded that procedural justice does in fact have a positive impact on the public’s perception of governmental institutions (Hough et al., 2010; Mazerolle et al., 2013a; Murphy and Cherney, 2012; Sunshine and Tyler, 2003). A few research have directly examined institutional trust in the policing context (e.g. Boateng, 2018; Camp et al., 2021). Specifically, Boateng (2018) examined institutional trust and its relationship to police performance, and Camp et al. (2021) examined police officers’ prosody and its impact on the citizens’ institutional trust in police. However, the objective of the current research is to examine the relationship between procedural justice and legitimacy through the double mediating role of the public’s perception of institutional trust and obligation to obey.

Abstract

The issue of the reunification of North and South Korea attracted worldwide attention in June 2000, when the historic summit meeting between the two top Korean leaders was held in North Korea. Although recently the two Koreas have stepped up their efforts toward reconciliation, international scholars and researchers in Korean studies seem to agree that Korean reunification will be slow and difficult. For this reason, they are researching possible solutions to the critical problems involved, and thus there has been an upsurge of published materials on reunification. This annotated bibliography aims to serve as a guide to these materials. Although this bibliography is selective in that it is limited to literature published in English since 1996, it has wide content coverage and includes books, journals, government publications, special reports, research papers, and Websites. Given the complicated and dynamic situation in Korea, this bibliography will be of use to those who are concerned with Korean reunification.

Abstract

As the global economy continues to boom, there remains a significant need for more efficient transportation and effective management in corporate logistics. In this regard, railways have been considered one of the most efficient modes for long distance transportation. In Asia, there are several extensive and direct railroads such as the TSR (Trans-Siberian-Railroad), the TCR (Trans-Chinese-Railroad) and the TMR (Trans-Mongolian-Railroad) which could connect Asia to Europe. If these railroad networks such as the TKR (Trans-Korean-Railroad) were fully operational, it is expected that they would replace a major portion of the current global trade transportation with is sent through other shipping methods. Therefore, the development of railroad networks is one of the most important steps toward an integrated international transportation system. However, in reality, it is difficult to achieve this vision because of the political and economic problems surrounding multiple countries that this network must cut across. Moreover, it is difficult to ensure the railways’ economic competitiveness when it is compared with other logistics options. In this study, we aim to discover the status quo about railway networks by focusing on the TCR and TSR. Through in-depth interviews and surveys with actual users of these networks, current issues and problems are analysed in order to make suggestions for improvements. This research also provides meaningful insights which the TKR-TSR and TKR-TCR railway networks should consider if they want to continue to be successful in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the complex constellation of underlying factors between community policing and fear of crime by embracing various exogenous variables identified through accumulated empirical research. Another important purpose of the current study is to examine the association between community policing and fear of crime in the Korean context.

Design/methodology/approach

The data originated from a survey administrated by the Korean Institution of Criminology in the area of Seoul, South Korea, in an attempt to examine citizens’ fear of crime, perceptions of public safety and environment. Using a stratified sampling method, a total of 654 respondents were selected. Structural equation modeling was used to examine direct and indirect relationships among exogenous and endogenous variables and to test the authors’ hypothesized structural model of the citizen's fear of crime.

Findings

The current study found that the four proposed models between community policing and fear of crime were not supported in the Korean context. Neither direct nor indirect relationships between community policing and fear of crime were statistically significant. On the other hand, community policing was found to be significantly and indirectly associated with perceived risk of crime; those who more perceived community policing activities felt a greater risk of crime. A logical explanation for these findings requires understanding of the characteristics of community policing practice and the unique crime environment in South Korea.

Originality/value

This study shows unique characteristics in the community policing‐fear of crime nexus in Korean society in relation to the implementation of community policing, the level of fear of crime and perception of community‐based crime control.

Abstract

During the early 1970s, per capita income of Koreans increased rapidly. The increased income was due to the speedy industrialization. Both increased income and mounting stress from jobs and the industrialized environment together induced Koreans to travel away from home to relax and regain strength to work.
