Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the long-run dynamic relationship between financial inclusion and economic growth for developing nations.

Design/methodology/approach

This study develops a comprehensive financial inclusion index based on the UNDP methodology for 53 developing nations. The authors use second-generation unit root tests, cointegration techniques and an advanced dynamic common correlated effects estimator model called cross-sectional augmented autoregressive distributed lags (CS-ARDL) to examine long-run dynamics among variables.

Findings

The tests confirm the presence of slope-heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependency. The second-generation panel unit root tests show the chosen variables are stationary at first difference. The bootstrap Westerlund cointegration result shows the variables are cointegrated in the long run. The CS-ARDL estimates conclude that financial inclusion positively enhances gross domestic product per capita in selected developing countries. The robustness check through augmented mean group estimation validates the findings.

Originality/value

The study makes three important contributions: first, it constructs a comprehensive financial inclusion index using 10 variables for a panel of 53 developing nations; second, the potential cross-section dependence and slope heterogeneity of panel data have been accounted for by applying the second-generation unit root tests; third, the study uses the dynamic common correlated effects estimator model (CS-ARDL) to examine long-run dynamics among variables.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines India's socio-economic attributes and different financial dimensions of financial inclusion (FI).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses a principal component analysis (PCA) to build indexes related to financial dimensions. It applies the logistics regression model and the Fairlie decomposition method to determine India's socio-economic and financial characteristics of FI.

Findings

Based on the logistic regression, socio-economic factors like age, gender, marital status, level of education and religion have an impact on FI. The use of financial institutions has positively contributed to the probability of FI, while the low proximity of financial service providers retards the process of FI. Fairlie decomposition concludes regional disparity and gender disparity in FI; however, the rural–urban gap in FI is not captured by the variables included in the study. The main reasons for the discrepancy are lack of education, financial literacy, the proximity of financial service providers and lack of financial institutions.

Originality/value

This paper makes two important contributions: first, it presents a micro-level analysis of FI across the socio-demographic strata of India, and second, it demonstrates the regional, rural–urban and gender disparity in FI in India.

Abstract

Theoretical basis

The case dwells with the following theoretical concepts: Appreciate the different need dimensions required to motivate different employee types based on need theory (Alderfer, 1969). Identify the functional needs as per Maslow’s need hierarchy (Hall & Naougaim, 1968) for the permanent and contractual workers. Outline why only hygiene factors are insufficient to arrest worker absenteeism during a pandemic like COVID-19. Apply need theory and “Herzberg’s two-factor theory” (Herzberg, 1966; Herzberg et al., 1957) to enumerate the measures that need to be implemented to build supply chain resilience by reducing absenteeism by motivating employees.

Research methodology

The case is based on primary research carried out by the authors at Alkem Laboratories Ltd., Sikkim unit in India, during the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the company leading to high absenteeism of contractual workers.

Case overview/Synopsis

Alkem Laboratories Ltd. is a leading pharma major from India with a global footprint. At the break of COVID-19 pandemic, the manufacturing unit of the company at Sikkim is facing the scare of mass absenteeism, especially among the contractual workers who account for 60% of the workforce of the unit. Ashok Priyadarshi (Vice President, Human Resources) and his team along with the think tank of the unit have to find a solution to the problem at hand. What shall be the measures that the think tank will propose? The team sets out to find an answer to these questions so that Alkem could seize the business opportunity at the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Complexity academic level

The case is suitable for undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in organizational behavior, organizational change and development and supply chain risk management. The case can also be positioned for executive education and training modules in companies on employee motivation and commitment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to advocate for small-scale entrepreneurship with commercial cultivation to earn better profits at the farmer level. This paper explores potential value chain configurations of vertical coordination.

Design/methodology/approach

The aloe vera supply chain was examined for the study where aloe vera juice is the product. The various configurations are complete vertical coordination, semi-vertical coordination and non-vertical coordination. These were analysed to find feasibility and market prospects based on parameters. The cyclic view of supply chains, comparative analysis and fuzzy-analytical hierarchy process algorithm are presented.

Findings

The semi-vertically coordinated supply chain is indicated as the optimum setup to initiate value chains. The entrepreneurs in this configuration will be able to sell semi-finished produce to a brand that will process and distribute the final product. This B2B setup will help the farmer to earn better revenues in the post-COVID-19 scenario. Effective marketing with improved execution and innovation will boost the food processing industry.

Research limitations/implications

This study uses an established methodology to distinguish among alternatives based on underlying factors. The study is based on data collected from stakeholders. The study reflects the most accurate picture of real-world scenarios at the farm and market level in the Indian context.

Practical implications

This study’s learnings will help understand the organisational approach to serve demand by designing unique business configurations. Adapting the fundamental model with technological intervention will improve supply chain performance and sustainability. The most modern approaches in agri-business, such as subscription models, vertical farming, corporate entrepreneurship and technological intervention, will be covered in future work.

Social implications

This study will help stakeholders, including the government, decide whether to introduce training skills, subsidy policies, business expansion ideas and feasibility studies.

Originality/value

The study highlights the strategic role of developing the B2B platform to support customer values and customer ecosystem with better product availability.

Abstract

Purpose

Well-being at work is a prime concern for learning organizations where work is knowledge-intensive and the need for updated learning exerts high work pressure. This study aims to examine the mediating influence of organizational learning capability in facilitating routine and novel knowledge sharing to foster employees’ well-being at work in Indian information technology (IT) organizations. This research explores whether the sharing of routine knowledge and novel knowledge contributes to employees’ well-being at work by enhancing organizational learning capability.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a quantitative approach, the authors collected data from 209 employees in IT organizations in India via a questionnaire survey. After verifying the reliability and validity of the data, the authors analysed the data using co-variance-based structural equation modelling using AMOS 26.

Findings

The results show that the indirect effect of routine and novel knowledge sharing on well-being at work was influenced by the mediating role of organizational learning capability. Routine knowledge sharing has a significant positive impact on organizational learning capability and well-being at work. While novel knowledge sharing positively predicted organizational learning capability, it did not have a direct impact on well-being at work. Moreover, organizational learning capability has a direct positive effect on employees’ well-being at work.

Research limitations/implications

The cross-sectional design of the study makes the cause-and-effect relationship difficult to conclude. Moreover, the use of self-report measures poses methodological biases. Thus, longitudinal studies with objective measurements are recommended. Future studies can examine the role of individual characteristics such as learning orientation and personality in the studied framework.

Practical implications

Employee well-being and organizational learning can be enhanced through knowledge sharing practices, promoted by human resource policies and leaders. This promotes on-the-job learning, reducing working hours for training and learning purposes. By fostering a culture of openness, mutual trust and networking, organizations can enhance their employees’ work−life balance and overall performance.

Originality/value

This paper addresses a paucity in the literature concerning the outcomes of knowledge sharing and factors that lead to well-being at work. Drawing on the learning-based well-being perspective and job-demand resource theory, this research pioneers the examination of the mediating effect of organizational learning capability in the link between routine and novel knowledge sharing and employees’ well-being in IT learning organizations in India. Findings of this study may help managers of IT firms boost organizational learning and improve knowledge workers’ well-being, thus helping to maximize their performance and enhance employee retention and welfare.

Abstract

Purpose

The literature review of post-harvest supply chain (PHSC) losses is carried out and analyzed in this paper followed by bibliometric analysis of the literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The literature survey is performed across various dimensions such as PHSC losses, PHSC risks and PHSC sustainability (waste management and waste reduction). One hundred thirty research articles during the period of 1989–2020 were considered for the review.

Findings

The PHSC losses have been identified in this literature survey. The calculation and mitigation strategies stated by various researchers in the literature are addressed. The important loss mitigation dynamics are also presented to reduce the PHSC losses and to improve food availability.

Research limitations/implications

The major focus is given on the PHSC of agriculture produces. However, research articles from fish and meat supply chain are excluded as they follow a different perishability curve.

Practical implications

The current work will add value to the agriculture supply chain literature, provide a platform for PHSC losses and provide assistance/guideline toward loss calculation, loss mitigation, improved rural employability, improved rural entrepreneurship and improved revenue generation.

Social implications

The performed research will assist the researchers, entrepreneurs and farmers to understand the current scenario of food wastage at different stages of the supply chain better. It will provide the guidelines for calculation and mitigation of various stated PHSC losses. This study will be helpful to enhance food availability and food security in post-coronavirus crisis.

Originality/value

The paper explores and highlights PHSC loss calculations and mitigation strategies to identify the postharvest loss situation and better utilization of fresh produces.

Abstract

Purpose

There is a dearth of research in the field of social marketing that attempts to understand why consumers prefer to use plastic packages when using online food delivery services. In addressing this issue, this study aims to investigate the role of moral disengagement, myopia and environmental apathy in the young generations' intentions to use plastic bags while ordering food online. It also examines the mediating role of moral disengagement and the moderating role of guilt in the context of the online food delivery service industry in China.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was designed to collect data, which yielded 256 usable responses. The partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique (SmartPLS 4.0) was used to test the study hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicate that environmental apathy, myopia and moral disengagement exert significant negative effects on consumer intention to use plastic. In addition, moral disengagement was able to mediate the links between “environmental apathy”, “myopia” and “plastic usage intention”. Lastly, consumers’ guilt was found to be a significant moderator in the link between moral disengagement and plastic usage intention.

Practical implications

This research holds significant importance for social marketers in the online food delivery service industry. Particularly, by understanding consumers' negative behavioural aspects, social marketers can implement marketing strategies that emphasise green practices for environmental well-being.

Originality/value

This is a pioneer study that focuses on the negative aspects of consumer behaviour, such as myopia, environmental apathy and moral disengagement, to understand what drives young consumers to use plastic. Additionally, this study investigates several new relationships in the social marketing field, such as the mediating effect of moral disengagement between myopia, environmental apathy and plastic usage intention. It also tests the moderating effect of guilt on the link between moral disengagement and use intention.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the conservation of resource (COR) theory, this study investigates the association between the perception of organizational politics and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) while considering the mediating role of knowledge hiding and moderating role of political skill in this process.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected in a time-lagged survey in two waves with a three-week interval from frontline employees and their peers working in private sector banks in India. The hypothesized relationships were ascertained using the PROCESS macro for SPSS.

Findings

The results revealed a negative association between the perception of organizational politics and OCBs targeted at co-workers (OCBI), organization (OCBO) and customers (OCBC), both directly and indirectly, via knowledge hiding. Additionally, the negative indirect effect of the perception of organizational politics on OCB facets, via knowledge hiding, is buffered for individuals with high levels of political skill.

Originality/value

The current study portrays a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics between the perception of organizational politics and OCB, with a particular emphasis on identifying the unidentified factors that may impact this liaison.

Abstract

Purpose

The current challenges to traditional business practices increasingly involve spirituality. However, existing literature on spiritual leadership (SL) has not been used to date for obtaining a better understanding of why and how knowledge sharing (KS) occurs in organisations, particularly from the perspective of social dilemmas and work compassion. This paper aims to examine whether SL, through fostering experiences of compassion at work, leads followers to share knowledge prosocially in the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conceptualise KS action as the result of a social dilemma whereby followers decide to share knowledge rather than selfishly succumb to the temptation to withhold it for short-term gain. The authors hypothesise that SL cultivates experiences of compassion at work, which acts as a mediator that explains how and why SL encourages KS. The authors propose a model that includes a unique higher-order construct of SL assessed using Fry’s 17-item scale. Data were collected from a sample of 384 leaders and their followers from 14 manufacturing and service companies in India and analysed using structural equation modelling.

Findings

The results revealed significant relationships between SL, KS and compassion at work. Notably, compassion mediated the relationship between SL and KS. Findings suggest that SL encourages employees to engage KS, cultivating a compassionate work environment. This discourages them from succumbing to the selfish, individualistic or uncooperative temptations to withhold knowledge for short-term benefits.

Originality/value

This study demonstrates a novel relationship between SL and compassion, as well as a relationship between SL and prosocial KS in which compassion at work acts as a mediator.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to deepen the understanding of robust food supply chains (FSC) in SMEs by exploring and analyzing the literature through the lenses of digital technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

The study collected data from Scopus spanning from 2010 to 2024, employing selected keywords, and processed it using VOS-viewer and Biblioshiny to derive valid inferences and theoretical arguments.

Findings

The review paper identified several key themes shaping the future of supply chain management – Sustainability in SCM, Industry 4.0, Digitalization with FSCM, Circular Economy, Food Waste with Supply Chain, Food Security and Climate Change. These themes collectively bring transformative opportunities for both the adoption of digital technologies and sustainable practices in food supply chains.

Research limitations/implications

The review found limitations are rooted in financial constraints, institutional barriers and expertise-related challenges encountered within the realm of Digitalization and FSC. Government and corporate houses should focus on these limitations as well as convert them to strengthen the SMEs of FSC.

Originality/value

The study stands out as a pioneering review that not only explores Digitalization in FSC but also explores the link and evidence of SMEs in the unorganized sector, providing unique insights into a previously underexplored area.
