Designers of critical devices and machines are frequently confronted with the need to compromise between available materials which will resist, simultaneously, mechanical wear by elements in contact and corrosion by a process environment. These two qualities have long been mutually exclusive from the materials selection point of view. Yet many severe environments, long life requirements, and precision designs require both. Research applied to this need at the E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Inc. has identified alloys of a unique nature which are now available under the trade mark, Tribaloy.

Presents a model for clinic decentralization, implemented by Israel′s largest health insurance fund, Kupat Holim Clalit (KHC). The main elements of the model are: allocation of a fixed budget; delegation of authority for budget utilization and service delivery; provision of incentives for fiscal responsibility; and establishment of an internal information system. Explores expected outcomes of decentralization on the basis of an extensive literature review. Emphasizes the importance of evaluating such an organizational change, and outlines an evaluation strategy. A major concern in this strategy is to control for the effects of changes taking place at the same time‐as decentralization, and the effects of background variables such as demographic characteristics, health status, etc. For this purpose, a quasi‐experimental design was developed, based on the comparison of an experimental and control clinic, both before and after decentralization.

This article discusses how the concepts of exploration and exploitation are fruitful for understanding individual fantasies of escape from the demands of contemporary workplaces. We examine one influential articulation of such fantasies, namely the best-selling self-help book “The 4-Hour Workweek.” This book advocates that individuals outsource the bulk of the routine (“exploitation”) tasks of their lives, leaving themselves free for creativity, play, and leisure (“exploration”). In this way, a radical separation of exploitation and exploration at the individual level is proposed. We examine the meanings and contradictions of such ideas by discussing how they may function as powerful escape fantasies for those facing corporate overwork. However, we argue that the solution proposed is unsatisfactory because of its individualism, which fails to see the inherently social nature of work and life.

This study aims to investigate the effects of electroactive morphing on the Airbus A320 Reduced Scale prototype of the H2020 N° 723402 European Research project smart morphing and sensing (SMS) for aeronautical configurations [1]^,[2].

The flow regimes correspond to low subsonic take-off conditions. The morphing is applied through the vibration and slight deformation of the near trailing edge region; respecting the way, this actuation has been applied on the experimental prototype using micro fibre composite actuators. Optimal frequency range has been used, associated with low amplitudes of deformation with the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian methodology. This study used an adapted turbulence modelling with the organised eddy simulation (OES) as well as a hybrid approach delayed detached eddy simulation – with embedded OES (DDES–OES), able to sensitise and keep up the coherent structures development.

The morphing at an optimal frequency (300 Hz) and amplitude (0.7 mm), applied on a length (3.5 cm) near the trailing edge, has been studied at Reynolds number 1 million and incidence of 10°. The effects on the main flow instabilities and on the turbulent vortex structures are analysed using proper orthogonal decomposition. A modification of the wake structures and a formation of organised rows of vortices along the shear layer are obtained. This leads to a quasi-two-dimensional wake, benefits on the aerodynamic performance and a decrease of the frequency peaks in the spectrum, corresponding to an attenuation of the coherent structures.

This study provides a fundamental understanding of how the actuation modifies the coherent and turbulent vortex structures around the wing and in the wake.

The purpose of this paper is to theoretically develop and empirically explore knowledge absorption, combination and desorption within and between organizations.

On the basis of knowledge-based view and absorptive capacity, the authors have conducted a multiple-case study to develop a theoretically grounded and empirically supported model of intra- and inter-firm knowledge cycles.

Firms identify their knowledge gaps and stocks, both tacit and explicit, undertaking efforts to fill the latter and maximize the value of the former. The paper finds that knowledge exploration, integration and exploitation both within the firm and between firms relies on absorptive, combinative and desorptive capacities. Further, as such capacities are organizationally expensive to maintain, firms will often emphasize one capacity over the other and focus either internally or externally to meet organizational goals.

While there is extensive research into absorptive capacity and some into combinative capacity, there is little empirical investigation of desorptive capacity and none into the integration of the three concepts; this paper seeks to fill that gap. Moreover, the resulting novel integrative model allows managers and researchers to identify the various capacities in use and their applications within the firm and between firms.

Every employee embodies manifestations of every demographic that attach to him or her different minority and majority statuses at the same time. As these statuses are often related to organizational hierarchies, employees frequently hold positions of dominance and subordination at the same time. Thus, a given individual’s coping strategies (or coping behavior) in terms of minority stress due to organizational processes of hierarchization, marginalization, and discrimination, are very often a simultaneous coping in terms of more than one demographic. Research on minority stress mostly focuses on single demographics representing only single facets of workforce diversity. By integrating the demographics of age, disability status, nationality, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, and religion into one framework, the intersectional model proposed in this chapter broadens the perspective on minorities and related minority stress in the workplace. It is shown that coping with minority stress because of one demographic must always be interpreted in relation to the other demographics. The manifestation of one demographic can limit or broaden one’s coping resources for coping with minority stress because of another dimension. Thus, the manifestation of one demographic can determine the coping opportunities and coping behavior one applies to situations because of the minority status of another demographic. This coping behavior can include disclosure decisions about invisible demographics. Therefore, organizational interventions aiming to create a supportive workplace environment and equal opportunities for every employee (e.g., diversity management approaches) should include more demographics instead of focusing only on few.

Decision-makers often struggle to combine advice with their own intuition. This study examines how advice-giver traits and decision-makers’ intuition influence advice uptake. We present a novel typology based on decision-makers’ trust in advice-givers and their perceived expertise.

This qualitative study uses a sample of publicly available interview data with 51 elite performers. Using inductive and content analysis, we explore the mediation between decision-makers’ intuitive competence (ability to effectively deploy intuition in interface with advice) and their autonomy (self-endorsement from past performance).

We identify four sources of advice: mentor advice, specialist advice, confidant advice and commentator advice. Drawing on instances of different sources of advice along varying degrees of trust and expertise, we propose a framework for interaction between intuitional competence and advice characteristics.

We offer a novel way of contextualising nuanced forms of advice and provide a structured typology of sources, characterised by trust and expertise. This typology and our findings help reconcile contradictions in decision-making research. Finally, we offer practical guidance for the uptake of advice.
