Since the development of the Nimonic¹ alloys for Sir Frank Whittle’s first jet engine, Henry Wiggin Ltd, now part of Special Metals Corporation, has been involved with the design and improvement of nickel alloys for aerospace engineering. Whilst much of this work continues to be in relation to alloys for the high strength/high temperature applications of turbine blades, discs, seals, rings and casings of aero engines, nickel alloys are being utilised for other key aerospace engineering areas such as tooling for composite manufacture. The focus of this paper is on four recent developments in nickel alloys for aerospace engineering, namely: disc alloys; low expansion superalloys; Inconel alloy 718SPF – a nickel base superalloy capable of being superplastically formed; Nilo (low expansion alloys) for composite tooling.

THE responsibility for materials handling methods, as for all other production methods, should be made the clear responsibility of the head of Work Study. The reasoning behind that firm conclusion is very logical. Industry in general depends for its success upon the application of some process such as machining or finishing of raw materials. Every such operation adds to its value and builds up a firm's turnover. It is therefore obvious that the more time there is devoted to conversion the less will be wasted on profitless storage or unproductive transport from one part of the works to another.

This study was undertaken in response to the audit requirements for the National Service Framework for Older People Standard 1 ‘Rooting Out Ageism’. The aim of this study was to identify and describe the nature of any age‐discriminatory practice in the clinical setting through the perceptions and experiences of staff working with older people.The study adopted a qualitative approach using focus group design. Six focus groups were conducted with 57 members of staff. An aim of the study method was to isolate consensus areas of ageist practice that would facilitate targeted intervention. To assist this, statements relating to common practice experiences were developed following the first two focus groups. This was used as a discussion tool for the subsequent groups.Perceived ageist practice could be grouped under the following themes:• access to services• communication and attitudes• treatment and care• the role of relatives• resources.On the basis of the findings, greater choice and control for older people need to be key features of the recommendations, through the development of a co‐ordinated development programme involving all stakeholders

Project HERMES, the proposed electronic document delivery service sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry, is described. HERMES is characterized by the participation of major publishers, industrial and public libraries and national government and by the use of Teletex for both document ordering and delivery. For the first phase of the project, provision of three facilities—electronic document ordering and delivery, automatic document delivery and electronic mail—to a pilot group of some sixty organizations is proposed. The major aim of the project is to promote and gain experience of the use of Teletex within the information and publishing community. [The Department of Trade and Industry announced in December 1984 that it does not intend to proceed with Project HERMES. The Journal of Documentation Editorial Board nevertheless feels that Susan Amy's paper should be published on the grounds that the proposals it details remain one possible approach to the implementation of a demonstration document delivery service based on teletex.]

Invented in late 1890s, asbestos cement sheeting rose to prominence during the post-Second World War period as a building material for low-cost housing by state housing commissions and low-income families (“fibro homes”). The adverse health effects of asbestos fibres in the building industry and home renovation activities are well documented. Fibro homes of the 1950s and 1960s are increasingly coming under the gaze of heritage studies, which brings to the fore the question of how to deal with the asbestos cement sheeting most are clad with.

This paper provides the first systematic review to assess the literature (126 papers were identified in Google Scholar and scanned for content) on the conservation management of asbestos cement sheeting in heritage properties.

Overall, engagement with the conservation management of asbestos cement sheeting in heritage properties was low, with only two sources dealing with asbestos cement sheeting in any level of detail. The studies note that if asbestos cement sheeting is in good condition, it should be left alone. Numerous conservation and repair options do exist, in particular the application of (coloured) sealants that extend the life of asbestos cement sheets and asbestos cement roofing.

This paper represents the first systematic review to assess conservation management options for asbestos cement sheeting in heritage properties.

The paper is concerned with exploration of sensor signals in differential electronic nose. It is a special type of nose, which applies double sensor matrices and exploits only their differential signals, which are used in recognition of patterns associated with them. The purpose of this paper is to study the application of differential nose in dynamic measurement of aroma of 11 brands of cigarettes.

The most important task in pattern recognition using electronic nose is its resistance to the noise corrupting the measurement. The authors will analyze and compare the performance of the nose in the noisy environment by applying two classifier systems: the support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF) of decision trees.

On the basis of numerical experiments the authors have found that application of SVM as the classifier in the electronic nose is more advantageous than RF, especially at high level of noise and small number of measuring sensors. Its application allowed to recognize 11 brands of cigarettes with the accuracy close to 100 percent.

Thanks to application of two identical sensors working in a differential mode the authors avoid the baseline estimation and thus the solution is well suited for on-line dynamic measurements of the process.

The paper has studied the advantages and limitations of the differential electronic nose following from the existence of the noise, corrupting the measurements. It has pointed an important role of the applied classifier system in getting the electronic nose of the highest quality.

The aim of this publication is to list the catalogues of the Department of Manuscripts which are in regular use. Catalogues which have been superseded by later publications are not normally included, since whatever their historical or bibliographical interest they are no longer everyday working tools. Stanley Jast, who could be brash and also subtle in over‐ and in under‐statement once said to the writer that librarians as a class were much too bashful. He observed that most of the town librarians who had crossed the library stage since public libraries began were quiet lads who had done their duty, taken their cash, and let the credit go.
