Abstract
The UDC as a language for machine retrieval has been tested and found feasible using a collection of seismological literature. The system developed is flexible and can be adjusted to any desired level of exhaustivity of indexing. A description is given of the technique for handling UDC relationships, recording the input data, and searching the data file using an IBM 1401 computer.

Discusses the use of a corporate Internet in a geographically‐spread consulting firm, James Martin & Co., to share ideas, vision, client information and results. Illustrates with examples. Applications include a quarterly Employee Attitude Survey and regular discussion forums. Proposes that a well‐designed corporate intranet is a highly effective method of making intangible vision and mission pledges more tangible.

Abstract
The purposes of a subject index in a small information service are examined and the organizational aspects of the Big information Centre and the Small Service in relation to the descriptor level are analyzed. The advantages of co‐ordinate indexing versus the conventional hierarchical classification in meeting complex information needs are pointed out. Through an evaluation of the flexible structure of the thesauri, the lower‐level but otherwise similar vocabulary needs of the small service are discussed. The use of the UDC to effect the level transitions required to adapt the thesauri to the needs of the Small Service is examined. It is shown how an improved subject index for the Soreq book collection has been constructed by the combined use of the EURATOM Thesaurus and the UDC. Examples to illustrate the design of this index are given. In the interest of expanding the co‐operation between the small Service and big centre, the idea of a multi‐level thesaurus is proposed.

Abstract
Purpose
This study explores the applicability of Anderson's (1999) code of the street framework to an Asian context by examining the relationship between residents' perceptions of police ineffectiveness, nationality, and street codes in foreigner-concentrated areas in South Korea.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors used survey data from 1,865 residents of diverse nationalities living in 20 foreigner-concentrated areas in South Korea. Mixed-effects ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and moderation analysis were used to examine (1) the association between residents' perceptions of police ineffectiveness and their street codes and (2) how this association varies across nationality groups.
Findings
The study findings overall indicated that higher resident perceptions of police as ineffective tended to correspond with greater levels of street codes. However, the interaction analysis results found that this relationship was conditioned by nationality. Specifically, perceptions of police ineffectiveness were associated with greater levels of street codes among foreign residents, particularly Korean-Chinese residents, whereas this was not the case among Korean residents.
Originality/value
The relationship between perceptions of the police and street codes described by Anderson (1999) has primarily been examined in the context of the U.S. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study represents the first attempt to explore the link between residents' perceptions of the police and street codes by different nationality groups within an Asian setting.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present the results of the comparison between different approaches to the prediction of electricity prices. It is well-known that the properties of the data generation process may prefer some modeling methods over the others. The data having an origin in social or market processes are characterized by unexpectedly wide realization space resulting in the existence of the long tails in the probabilistic density function. These data may not be easy in time series prediction using standard approaches based on the normal distribution assumptions. The electricity prices on the deregulated market fall into this category.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper presents alternative approaches, i.e. memory-based prediction and fractal approach compared with established nonlinear method of neural networks. The appropriate interpretation of results is supported with the statistical data analysis and data conditioning. These algorithms have been applied to the problem of the energy price prediction on the deregulated electricity market with data from Polish and Austrian energy stock exchanges.
Findings
The first outcome of the analysis is that there are several situations in the task of time series prediction, when standard modeling approach based on the assumption that each change is independent of the last following random Gaussian bell pattern may not be a true. In this paper, such a case was considered: price data from energy markets. Electricity prices data are biased by the human nature. It is shown that more relevant for data properties was Cauchy probabilistic distribution. Results have shown that alternative approaches may be used and prediction for both data memory-based approach resulted in the best performance.
Research limitations/implications
“Personalization” of the model is crucial aspect in the whole methodology. All available knowledge should be used on the forecasted phenomenon and incorporate it into the model. In case of the memory-based modeling, it is a specific design of the history searching routine that uses the understanding of the process features. Importance should shift toward methodology structure design and algorithm customization and then to parameter estimation. Such modeling approach may be more descriptive for the user enabling understanding of the process and further iterative improvement in a continuous striving for perfection.
Practical implications
Memory-based modeling can be practically applied. These models have large potential that is worth to be exploited. One disadvantage of this modeling approach is large calculation effort connected with a need of constant evaluation of large data sets. It was shown that a graphics processing unit (GPU) approach through parallel calculation on the graphical cards can improve it dramatically.
Social implications
The modeling of the electricity prices has big impact of the daily operation of the electricity traders and distributors. From one side, appropriate modeling can improve performance mitigating risks associated with the process. Thus, the end users should receive higher quality of services ultimately with lower prices and minimized risk of the energy loss incidents.
Originality/value
The use of the alternative approaches, such as memory-based reasoning or fractals, is very rare in the field of the electricity price forecasting. Thus, it gives a new impact for further research enabling development of better solutions incorporating all available process knowledge and customized hybrid algorithms.

Behavioral ecology theory is applied to data collected among Ghana’s Kassena-Nankana to highlight the gendered cultural forces that keep FGC practice in place through successful reproductive outcomes. With its strong association to marriageability, and thus women’s status and access to resources through marriage, circumcision has long been obligatory. However, the social transformation that is currently underway in this rural population is bringing a new perspective to the value of education, which is replacing circumcision as the resource access currency.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to show the emissions related to electric consumption in electric aviation. Aviation, being one of the main transportation and economical driver of global trade and consumerism, is responsible for an important ratio of anthropogenic emissions. Electric energy use in aircraft propulsion is gaining interest as a method of providing sustainable and environmentally friendly aviation. However, the production of electricity is more energy and emission sensitive compared to conventional jet fuel.
Design/methodology/approach
A well-to-pump (WTP) energy use and emission analysis were conducted to compare the electricity and conventional jet fuel emissions. For the calculations, a software and related database which is developed by Argonne’s Greenhouse gas, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation (GREET®) model is used to determine WTP analysis for electricity production and delivery pathways and compared it to baseline conventional jet fuel.
Findings
The WTP results show that electricity production and transmission have nine times higher average emissions compared to WTP emissions of conventional jet fuel. The future projection of emission calculations presented in this paper reveals that generating electricity from more renewable sources provides only a 50% reduction in general emissions. The electricity emission results are sensitive to the sources of production.
Originality/value
The main focus of this study is to analyze the WTP emissions of electric energy and conventional jet fuel for use on hybrid aircraft propulsion.

Purpose
In recent years, there is a gradual shift from sequential computing to parallel computing. Nowadays, nearly all computers are of multicore processors. To exploit the available cores, parallel computing becomes necessary. It increases speed by processing huge amount of data in real time. The purpose of this paper is to parallelize a set of well-known programs using different techniques to determine best way to parallelize a program experimented.
Design/methodology/approach
A set of numeric algorithms are parallelized using hand parallelization using OpenMP and auto parallelization using Pluto tool.
Findings
The work discovers that few of the algorithms are well suited in auto parallelization using Pluto tool but many of the algorithms execute more efficiently using OpenMP hand parallelization.
Originality/value
The work provides an original work on parallelization using OpenMP programming paradigm and Pluto tool.
