Abstract

This chapter examines the framing of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement in mainstream media. An analytic sample of 4,303 articles collected from the Dow Jones Factiva database reveals variation in depth, breadth, and intensity of BLM coverage in the following newspapers between 2012 and 2016: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Al Jazeera English. We review contemporary literature on racial inequality and employ Media Framing and Critical Race Theory to discuss the implications of our findings on public perceptions, future policy formation, and contemporary social protest worldwide.

Abstract

SEVERE natural exposure and laboratory test, dry salt/humidity, have both shown the advantages of primers that leach chromate over similar primers that do not. This advantage, applicable to both primer only and primer plus finish schemes, is paticularly evident where there are breaks, in the paint film due to edges, damage or paint cracking round rivet heads Several other laboratories have used other tests and have reached the same general conclusions. Sufficient experimental work has been carried out to formulate primers with very different leach rate characteristics. Many of these have been produced and are now being corrosion tested When the results are available it is hoped that they will be sufficiently consistent to enable a leaching test to be included in some paint specifications instead of the present two year corrosion test. Until then it is suggested that this fairly simple test provides a useful means of screening new primers for the paint industry and, for the aircraft constructor, one possible way of chuosing between the several competitive schemes offered to him, without having to wait many years for the results of corrosion lasts.

Abstract

Myra Gordon (2004) argues that “the real reason for a general failure to diversify lies in the culture and practices typically associated with faculty hiring” (p. 184). This chapter examines the faculty hiring process and how it contributes to the underrepresentation of female faculty of color and to what happens to them if they are hired. Drawing on the existing literature and insights from critical theory and signal theory, the dissection of the process considers how institutionalized norms characteristic of the dominant group in the academy (white, males) play a role in the exclusion (oppression) of nontraditional candidates, and signal their fit with those norms.

Abstract

A new corrosion protection system developed at B.A.C. Weybridge was first introduced on Vanguard aircraft and has remained in use almost unchanged up to the VC10 and B.A.C.1 11 aircraft which are being produced at this time. The system represented a complete change from previous ones, both in materials and methods of application and was the result of a very considerable amount of research into the limitations of the protective methods used up to that time. Through these investigations it became evident that insufficient emphasis had been placed on the importance of organic materials in corrosion protection and that the paints then in use failed to give satisfactory service due to lack of adequate‐fluid resistance and an inability to withstand repeated flexing and straining of the metal substrate without cracking of flaking. Hence the paint had to be resistant to all anticipated contaminants, including freight spillage, over the entire temperature envelope of the aircraft and had to be sufficiently adherent and flexible to withstand deformation of the substrate up to the point of metal failure. Long term protection from corrosion and compatibility with other forms of protection e.g. sealants, jointing compounds, etc. was also required, as well as an ability to withstand casual damage during service and maintenance. This lead to the decision (hat the Vanguard was to be an all‐painted aircraft and that the many and often conflicting requirements of the paint could only be met by a polyamide‐cured epoxy material. Having thus established the basic concept, consideration can now be given to the detailed requirements.

Abstract

High performance is demanded of aircraft finishes because of the severity of the environmental conditions to which they are exposed. Many aircraft today operate long range, and encounter a wide variety of climatic conditions. Cyclic condensation occurs during the various temperature and pressure fluctuations, and keel areas may contain large quantities of water containing dissolved salts as well as aggressive fluids such as phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, ester lubricants, fuels etc. Skin temperatures can change rapidly during flight and may even reach 130°C, by kinetic heating. Erosive influences are met whilst flying through rain, dust and hail, and as the whole structure is vibrating under changing stress, cracking tendencies of coatings are accentuated. C. E. Hoey has reviewed aircraft finishes against this background.

Abstract

LIKE many other people, Hawker Siddeley Dynamics have also been interested in resin‐systems which have, or claim to have, a higher heat resistance, and tests on these as they became available were part of our normal evaluation programme at Whitley. It was during one of these programmes, when physical and mechanical properties of filled resins were being evaluated that the question of their suitability as protective coatings against rain was raised. The subject was a challenging one, and we decided to take it up.
