Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, multiuser-multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO)-based wireless communication system has emerged as a prominent 5G technique that has several advantages over conventional MIMO systems such as high data rate and channel capacity. In this paper, the authors introduce a novel low-complexity radix factorization-based fast Fourier transform (FFT) as a multibeamformer and maximal likelihood-MU detection (ML-MUD) techniques as an optimal signal subdetector which results with considerable complexity reduction with intolerable error rate performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed radix-factorized FFT-multibeamforming (RF-FFT-MBF) architectures have the potential to reduce both hardware complexity and energy consumptions as compared to its state-of-the-art methods while meeting the throughput requirements of emerging 5G devices. Here through simulation results, the efficiency of the scaled ML subdetector system is compared with the conventional ML detectors.

Findings

Here through simulation results, the efficiency of the scaled ML subdetector system is compared with the conventional ML detectors. Through experimental results, it is well proved that the proposed detector offers significant hardware and energy efficiency with the least possible error rate performance overhead.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of residential treatment which follows the therapeutic community (TC) model for Sri Lankan individuals with substance use disorder (SUD).

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in two selected residential treatment centers which follow the TC model as a rehabilitation approach. All the clients of the selected residential treatment centers were invited to take part in the study and data were collected from 75 consented male participants using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The perceived effectiveness of the residential treatment was assessed using the Treatment Effectiveness Assessment instrument. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Findings

Most of the participants were Sinhalese (98.7%, n = 74) with a mean age of 27.0 ± 6.0 years. The average duration in which participants stayed at selected centers was 8.0 ± 4.0 months. Most of the participants reported that the encouragement during the program was sufficient (89.3%, n = 67), psychological support was satisfactory (89.3%, n = 67), freedom (69.5%, n = 52) and facilities were adequate (76.0%, n = 57) within the program. A higher proportion of participants said that the counselors and program guides were friendly (80.0%, n = 60), and participants were allowed to communicate with their family with restrictions (92.0%, n = 69). The mean perceived effectiveness score (score range 1–40) was 34.0 ± 7.0 and the four domain scores (score range 1–10) were substance use (9.0 ± 2.0), health (8.0 ± 2.0), lifestyle (9.0 ± 2.0) and community (9.0 ± 2.0). The majority (88.0%, n = 66) of the participants perceived a high level of treatment effectiveness.

Originality/value

There is a paucity of empirical evidence on effectiveness of TC model for individuals with SUD in South Asian countries including Sri Lanka. The findings of this study highlight that the participants perceived higher effectiveness of the residential treatment which follows the TC approach for Sri Lankan individuals with SUD.

This chapter discusses a survey of literature on efficiency, productivity and other issues related to pharmaceutical industry in India and across the globe. Econometric theoretical literature on technical efficiency (TE) as well as econometric theoretical literature on total factor productivity growth (TFPG) are discussed in separate sections. Individual sections discuss studies on the performance of the pharmaceutical industries in the Indian context, studies on the performance of the pharmaceutical industries in the international context, studies on the efficiency of Indian pharmaceutical industry (IPI), studies on the TFPG of the IPI, other studies on IPI and also studies on the performance of the pharmaceutical industries in the international context (other than India). This chapter discusses the existing study highlighting the gaps and presents the connection of the present study with the existing literature in the conclusion section.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the nature and extent of foodborne diseases in India due to chemical and microbial agents.

Design/methodology/approach

The scientific investigations/reports on outbreak of foodborne diseases in India for the past 29 (1980‐2009) years due to adulteration, chemical, and microbiological contamination have been reviewed. Reported scientific information on foodborne pathogens detected and quantified in Indian foods has also been reviewed.

Findings

A total of 37 outbreaks involving 3,485 persons who have been affected due to food poisoning have been reported in India. Although the common forms of foodborne diseases are those due to bacterial contamination of foods, however, higher numbers of deaths have been observed due to chemical contaminants in foods.

Originality/value

A national foodborne disease surveillance system needs to be developed in India in order to enable effective detection, control and prevention of foodborne disease outbreaks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the performance of Indian engineering goods industry by measuring the technical efficiency and input-driven growth.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used the panel data of six firms from the period of 1991–92 to 2014–15 compiled from Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), India and output-oriented econometric techniques such as pooled OLS model, and stochastic frontier approach has been applied to measure the technical efficiency.

Findings

The results suggest that the prime sources of high performance in engineering goods industry, which has recorded 8.8% output growth, are primarily contributed by inputs driven growth (8.2%) during the post-reform period, while the effect of technological change is minimal (0.1%) and technical efficiency change is negative (−0.2%). It was due to sluggishness, outdated technology and underutilization of resources in Indian economy.

Research limitations/implications

This research paper is limited to engineering goods industry based on concorded macro data. The recommendations are that India should pursue policies and programs which may focus on technology acquisition, skill enhancement of labor, better capacity utilization, R&D and infrastructure development that may augment the technical change and technical efficiency change of the sector.

Originality/value

This research provides robust and significant estimates of technical efficiency and adds valuable insights to the existing literature by identifying the potential areas that improves the performance of Indian engineering goods industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This article analyses the structural change in microenterprises located at India's unorganised manufacturing sector in terms of output mix, choice of technique and productivity during the last few decades.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on data collected from a quinquennial survey of unorganised firms, this study attempts productivity analysis by using the growth accounting technique.

Findings

The paper finds that there is a significant structural change which has occurred in the small firm sector in Indian manufacturing. The share of capital-intensive industries has increased substantially in recent years. Further, though small firms are more labour intensive, the labour productivity and total productivity of these firms are very low. The falling labour productivity and rising capital intensity indicates replacement of labour with capital in Indian small firm sector.

Practical implications

Low productivity of the sector is a cause for concern and this needs to be addressed by making the sector more competitive in the world market. To achieve this, policies should be designed so that small firms reach the efficient scale of production.

Originality/value

This is the first paper which examines structural changes in the Indian MSME sector. The findings have strong implications for creation of a viable ecosystem of entrepreneurship in the country.

Abstract

Purpose

Data was obtained from students from 39 universities in 24 countries, part of a large experiential exercise, X-Culture, who worked remotely in cross-cultural teams to solve business problems. The purpose of this study is to develop and test, using structural equation modeling, a conceptual model that identifies the determinants of satisfaction with teamwork.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was obtained from participants, students from universities from 39 universities in 24 countries, in a large experiential exercise, X-Culture, who worked remotely in cross-cultural teams to solve business problems. A conceptual model that identifies determinants of satisfaction with teamwork was developed and tested using structural equation modeling.

Findings

Satisfaction with teamwork is related to cultural intelligence (CQ), team identity and team climate. Interestingly, CQ of individual team members does not directly impact satisfaction with teamwork. Team identification and team climate, variables that require personal engagement and goodwill, mediate the effects of CQ on satisfaction.

Originality/value

Results suggest that team identification and team climate are important antecedents and explanatory mechanisms for developing satisfaction with teamwork. Having culturally intelligent team members is a necessary, but insufficient condition for satisfying teamwork. Therefore, to increase satisfaction with global virtual teamwork, teams need more than simply culturally intelligent team members. Increased satisfaction requires that team members identify with their team and develop a favorable team climate. The authors suggest education recommendations for global virtual teams.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to comprehend the different concepts that are closely associated in understanding the open access journal movement. The study aims to demonstrate the methodology of compiling lists of open access journals in an academic library environment. A web‐based service of this kind in select subjects of study (knowledge domains) ensures visibility for open access literature in the scientific community.

Design/methodology/approach

The study generates comprehensive lists of open access journals in mathematics and statistics, library and information science and economics. Popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo! are employed to identify open access journals that are available in the above‐mentioned areas. Some open access platforms such as DOAJ, Open J‐gate and EMIS are also identified as popular source for open access journals.

Findings

Research findings indicate that there are quite a number of sources that provide access to open access journals, and they are scattered across the internet. The journal home page is the most authentic source for accessing the full‐text articles at any given time. DOAJ and Open J‐gate have been identified as the next two popular platforms from where open access journals can be accessed.

Practical implications

The study signifies the usefulness of a one‐stop platform for accessing open access journals in a specific subject. Since they are free by virtue of being open source, they can be accessed by anyone from any part of the world, irrespective of geographical barriers.

Originality/value

This study acts as a guide for librarians to initiate an easy‐to‐provide web‐based service to users.
