Abstract
A simple procedure for accurate calculation of pore pressures in undrained elasto‐plastic materials is described. An 8‐node element is used, with ‘reduced’ integration during stress redistribution, and ‘full’ integration to form the global stiffness matrix for the modified Newton—Raphson procedure. An analysis of passive earth pressure in an undrained soil is used to demonstrate the algorithm and computed results are compared with a closed‐form solution.

Abstract
This research was prompted by work undertaken by the author on the efficiency of shipping operations in the Suez Canal. The physical limitations of the Canal allow only one-way movement of ships for the greater part of its length, and thus ships are organised in convoys. These convoys have fixed starting times, with normally just one convoy per day operating in each direction. When traffic is heavy in the southbound direction, a second (smaller) relief convoy is organised to reduce waiting times which can otherwise exceed 24 hours. The process can be analysed by means of a bulk-service queueing model, where convoys of ships correspond to service batches of customers.
The model has application in the many other fields of transport where relief services are supplied. For example, a coach or train operator will often provide a relief service when customer demand is high. The process may be extended to cover cases where relief is provided for the relief service, resulting in a “cascade” of relief service queues.

Abstract
Using the concept of “community of practice” and a typology developed by Guile and Griffiths, this article characterizes the quality and the nature of learning students achieved while studying in a newly‐implemented pulp and paper vocational program, structured as a co‐operative education program and offered by six school boards throughout the province of Quebec, Canada. The observations come from a five‐year long action research program involving registered students, trainers in vocational centers, and work supervisors in pulp and paper mills. The conclusion highlights the structural barriers in pulp and paper mills that limit students’ access to operations. This co‐op education program is traditional according to the Guile and Griffiths’ typology.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the study is to analyze a sample of 528 published papers over the past 11 years by conducting a bibliometric analysis. The study also aims to provide a consolidated overview of the existing literature on “gaming addiction” and presents the status of research with future directions for researchers who wish to explore and contribute to this rapidly evolving field. The descriptive statistics have been conducted through citation and co-citation analysis.
Design/methodology/approach
For the bibliometric analysis, the documents were retrieved from the Scopus database with the help of the Scopus analyzer while the VOS viewer1.6.16 software was used to analyze citations, co-authorship, etc. The literature search strategy was applied across various databases and the articles published between 2010 and December 2021 giving a total of 1,219 articles across all disciplines. Finally, 528 articles were shortlisted through the query restricted to subject areas, namely, business management, psychology, social science and multidisciplinary areas.
Findings
IGA has also been recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, as one of the disorders; hence, this certainly calls for focussed efforts to understand the same and control further damage. The number of articles devoted to the study of “gaming addiction” has increased rapidly in recent years. Moreover, this study identifies some of the most influential articles in this area. Finally, this paper highlights the new trends and discusses the future research associated with gaming addiction.
Research limitations/implications
This study focusses on gaming addiction and its trends, related to researchers and country-wise contributions. This is one of the few studies to review the literature on gaming addiction by using citation and co-citation analysis. The main findings of this paper will help academicians and practitioners to improve the body of knowledge on the topic and provide an overview of promising future research avenues.
Originality/value
Internet gaming is a newly emerging area and studies related to gaming addiction are very recent. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is a unique and comprehensive overview of the leading works done in this area.

Purpose
Numerous geo-statistical methods have been developed to analyse the spatial dimension and composition of house prices. Despite these advances, spatial filtering remains an under-researched approach within house price studies. This paper aims to examine the spatial distribution of house prices using an eigenvector spatial filtering (ESF) procedure, to analyse the local variation and spatial heterogeneity.
Design/methodology/approach
Using 2,664 sale transactions over the one year period Q3 2017 to Q3 2018, an eigenvector spatial filtering approach is applied to evaluate spatial patterns within the Belfast housing market. This method consists of using geographical coordinates to specify eigenvectors across geographic distance to determine a set of spatial filters. These convey spatial structures representative of different spatial scales and units. The filters are incorporated as predictors into regression analyses to alleviate spatial autocorrelation. This approach is intuitive, given that detection of autocorrelation in specific filters and within the regression residuals can be markers for exclusion or inclusion criteria.
Findings
The findings show both robust and effective estimator consistency and limited spatial dependency – culminating in accurately specified hedonic pricing models. The findings show that the spatial component alone explains 14.6 per cent of the variation in property value, whereas 77.6 per cent of the variation could be attributed to an interaction between the structural characteristics and the local market geography expressed by the filters. This methodological step reduced short-scale spatial dependency and residual autocorrelation resulting in increased model stability and reduced misspecification error.
Originality/value
Eigenvector-based spatial filtering is a less known but suitable statistical protocol that can be used to analyse house price patterns taking into account spatial autocorrelation at varying (different) spatial scales. This approach arguably provides a more insightful analysis of house prices by removing spatial autocorrelation both objectively and subjectively to produce reliable, yet understandable, regression models, which do not suffer from traditional challenges of serial dependence or spatial mis-specification. This approach offers property researchers and policymakers an intuitive but comprehensible approach for producing accurate price estimation models, which can be readily interpreted.

Abstract
Purpose
Herein, the authors report the effects of printing parameters, joining method, and annealing conditions on the structural performance of fusion-joined short-beam sections produced by additive manufacturing.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors first identified appropriate printing parameters for joining segmented short beams and then used those parameters to print and fusion-join segments with different configurations of stiffeners to form a longer section of a wing or small wind turbine blade structure.
Findings
It was found that the beams with three lateral and three base stiffening ribs give the highest flexural strength among the three beams investigated. Results on joined beams annealed at different conditions showed that annealing at 70 °C for 0.5 h yields higher performance than annealing at the same temperature for longer times. It is also found that in the case of the hot-plate-welded three-dimensional (3D)-printed structures, no annealing is needed for reaching a high strength-to-weight ratio, but annealing is helpful for maximizing the modulus-to-weight ratio. Both thermal buckling and edge wrapping were observed under annealing at 70°C for 0.5 h for 3D-printed beams comprising two lateral and four base stiffening plates.
Originality/value
Fusion-joining of additively manufactured segments is needed owing to the constraint in building volume of a typical commercial 3D-printer. However, study of the effect of process parameters is needed to quantify their effect on mechanical performance. This investigation has therefore identified key printing parameters and annealing conditions for fusion-joining short segments to form larger structures, from multiple 3D-printed sections, such as wind blade structures.

Purpose
This paper aims to analyze the influence of rotated anisotropy on the stability of slope, the random finite element method is used in this study.
Design/methodology/approach
The random field is generated by the discrete cosine transform (DCT) method, which can generate random field with different rotated angles conveniently.
Findings
Two idealized slopes are analyzed; it is observed that the rotated angle significantly affects the slope failure risk. The two examples support the conclusion that when the orientation of the layers is nearly perpendicular to the slip surface, the slope is in a relative stable condition. The results of heterogeneous slope with two clay layers demonstrate that the rotated angle of lower layer mainly controls the failure mechanism of the slope, and the rotated angle of upper layer exhibits a significant influence on the probability of slope failure.
Originality/value
The method for rotated anisotropy random field generation based on the DCT has a simple expression with few parameters and is convenient for implementation and practical application. The proposed method and the results obtained are useful for analyzing the stability of the heterogeneous slopes in engineering projects.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop a mobile social networking service (SNS) addiction scale to measure respondents’ addiction levels.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on the existing literature on the components model of addiction by Griffiths (2005) and mobile SNS addiction, an initial scale in a five-point Likert-format was developed. It was refined through the pilot study with 100 participants and the main study with 423 participants utilizing factor analysis and Rasch analysis.
Findings
Mobile SNS addiction as a behavioral addiction, demonstrated six addiction symptoms: modification, salience, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict and relapse, which were interrelated with each other. The mobile SNS addiction scale developed in this study was found to be psychometrically robust and unidimensional.
Practical implications
The mobile SNS addiction scale consists of nine items, thus making it easier and more convenient to be applied to academic research and clinical practice.
Originality/value
The combined use of factor analysis and the Rasch model could largely reduce potential negative effects associated with limitations of classical test theory and improve the chance of developing a psychometrically robust instrument. The mobile SNS addiction scale covers a range of types of SNSs, thus being more generic. The items in the scale are unidimensionally loaded on the latent construct of mobile SNS addiction and demonstrate measurement invariance across respondents of different demographics.
