Abstract
Purpose
The data monetization market is valued at $1.5 billion, with an expected annual growth rate of 25%. This growth presents significant opportunities for companies to expand their revenue streams. However, many companies struggle to extract value from their data due to existing challenges and need for more knowledge. While existing studies describe and classify dimensions of the phenomenon, there is a need to explore causality relations that can help the structuring of data monetization processes. This study aimed to support the structuring of the data monetization process.
Design/methodology/approach
Proposing causality relations is important to explore the data monetization phenomenon. Therefore, empirical knowledge about data monetization was organized into design patterns using the context-intervention-mechanism-outcome (CIMO) logic. The effectiveness of these patterns was then assessed through an exploratory case study conducted at a leading Brazilian academic institution where data monetization is central to its business model.
Findings
The study yields six design patterns that address various aspects such as data pricing, data-driven business models and best practices for data monetization. Additionally, it presents a comprehensive understanding of the data monetization process through a value-added chain framework.
Originality/value
The findings contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field, the proposition of causality, and offer valuable insights into organizations that wish to structure their resources and capabilities and leverage data.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify current technologies related to Industry 4.0 and to develop a rationale to enhance the understanding of their functions within a data-driven paradigm.
Design/methodology/approach
A systematic literature review of 119 papers published in journals included in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) was conducted to identify Industry 4.0 technologies. A descriptive analysis characterizes the corpus, and a content analysis identifies the technologies.
Findings
The content analysis identified 111 technologies. These technologies perform four functions related to data: data generation and capture, data transmission, data conditioning, storage and processing and data application. The first three groups consist of enabling technologies and the fourth group of value-creating technologies. Results show that Industry 4.0 publications focus on enabling technologies that transmit and process data. Value-creating technologies, which apply data in order to develop new solutions, are still rare in the literature.
Research limitations/implications
The proposed framework serves as a structure for analysing the focus of publications over time, and enables the classification of new technologies as the paradigm evolves.
Practical implications
Because the technical side of the new production paradigm is complex and represents an evolving field, managers benefit from a simplified and data-driven approach. The proposed framework suggests that Industry 4.0 should be approached by looking at how data can create value and at what role each technology plays in this task.
Originality/value
The study makes a direct link between Industry 4.0 technologies and the key resource of this revolution, i.e. data. It provides a rationale that not only establishes relationships between technologies and data, but also highlights their roles as enablers or creators of value. Beyond showing the current focus of Industry 4.0 publications, this paper proposes a framework that is useful for tracking the evolution of the paradigm.

Abstract
Purpose
This study comprehensively reviews the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which refers to Industry 4.0 (IR 4.0) applications in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Multinational companies and big corporations have the capacity and resources to implement IR 4.0, but SMEs are limited due to financial constraints, expertise and lack of resources. Even so, IR 4.0 is required as technologies evolve and market demand has changed how firms do business.
Design/methodology/approach
To uncover the potential of IR 4.0 and critical determinants of SMEs’ adoption of IR 4.0, this study presents a bibliometric analysis to evaluate the current research streams in IR 4.0 adoption among SMEs through bibliographic coupling. Furthermore, this review provides a glimpse of the future by analyzing prospective trends on IR 4.0 in SMEs.
Findings
Bibliographic coupling produces five clusters: (1) challenges and barriers in IR 4.0 implementation among SMEs, (2) technological adoption of IR 4.0, (3) opportunities and benefits of IR 4.0, (4) business model innovation and (5) implication of IR 4.0 on SMEs technologies. On the contrary, co-word analysis produces three clusters: (1) technologies in IR 4.0, (2) strategy and management of IR 4.0 among SMEs and (3) IR 4.0 model for SMEs.
Research limitations/implications
Implications are directly related to business owners, policymakers and technology developers meeting the needs of the industry and SMEs, which are the focus of this review.
Originality/value
The findings contribute significantly to the body of knowledge by presenting a state-of-the-art science mapping approach to uncover the knowledge structure and intellectual linkage of IR 4.0 adoption within SMEs.
