Abstract

The benefits realised through increased computerisation of business logistics activities have been widely acclaimed and accepted. Evidence is presented to show through an extensive mail survey of logistics executives throughout the US that only modest progress has been made over the last decade in automating most logistics data. The sole company characteristic that correlated with greater computerisation was company size; all other company characteristics had limited effect.

Abstract

Organizational structure significantly influences firm performance. A recent survey of logistics professionals revealed that centralized structures accommodated logistics system integration better than decentralized structures. Also, centralized firms spent a lower percentage of net sales on logistics costs and information system support costs than decentralized firms. On the other hand, no signficiant differences were identified between centralized and decentralized firms in terms of information system performance. Information system support needs were addressed comparably regardless of organizational structuring. However, while centralized and decentralized firms exhibited similar capabilities in terms of effectiveness (reaching goals), centralized firms appeared to be more efficient (resource utilization).

Abstract

Fast and flexible low‐cost data processing and information systems have transformed business operations. Reductions in production setup times, lot sizes and inventory levels have yielded substantial improvements in productivity and profitability. The continuing changes sweeping American business impose significant impacts on the distribution (or logistics) function within manufacturing and merchandising firms. This research assesses current levels of computerization within logistics and examines the relationship between computerization and implementation of the integrated logistics concept. Significant differences between integrated and non‐integrated firms concerning levels of computerization are identified. Integrated firms have developed the information support systems necessary to position their organizations for competitive success.

Abstract

Presents the results of a recent survey of logistics executives concerning their perceptions regarding integrated logistics. Focuses discussion on an assessment of the current level of implementation of the integrated logistics concept among US firms and provides support for a relationship between integration and logistical performance improvements. Reveals that the results have significant managerial implications as more organizations place emphasis on supply chain management, and that internal and external integration are necessary to facilitate channel‐wide linkages and enhance channel efficiency.

Abstract

The librarian and researcher have to be able to uncover specific articles in their areas of interest. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Each article or book is assigned its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. This Volume indexes 29 journals indicating the depth, coverage and expansion of MCB's portfolio.

Abstract

An integrated paradigm of using multiple software programs in logistics education is proposed as an effective problem‐solving tool in addition to computer programming and spreadsheet modelling. Presents the essentials of logistics systems management and how each software program can be used individually and jointly to address logistics issues in detail. In the integrated paradigm, a Lotus 123 spreadsheet program is used as an integrator which works together with other software to facilitate student learning and to aid better decision making process. In‐class surveys show that the proposed approach is both effective and efficient in terms of getting the right results in less time. The approach is also realistic because the mixed mainframe and microcomputer operating environment and multiple software programs are being used by the business community.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify the importance of hotel attributes for pre-senior and senior tourists when selecting a hotel.

Design/methodology/approach

Three market segments (German, Dutch and British) were selected as the sample of the research. The Callan and Bowman’s (2000) scale was employed and data obtained from 13 five star hotels in Antalya, Turkey.

Findings

Results of the study showed that “value for money” and “availability of organized entertainment in the hotel” were important attributes for senior British tourists when compared to other participants. Dutch senior tourists attached more importance to food service attributes (“small food portions” and “special dietary menus”) than did the other respondents.

Practical implications

Research results confirmed the importance of staff attributes (“politeness of staff” and “friendliness of staff”) for customer satisfaction. This finding highlights the need for training programmes targeting hospitality employees, with a specific focus on meeting customers’ demands for receiving friendly and polite service.

Originality/value

The present study intends to contribute to the literature on senior tourist market by identifying the importance of hotel attributes for three market segments (Germany, England and The Netherlands).
