Abstract
Computer literacy is defined. Reasons are given why computer literacy is required by librarians/information officers and some of the computerised library tasks are listed. Problems such as computer fear/anxiety and computer resistance, the clash of computer software methodologies, and miscellaneous problems such as the acquisition of unknown, often unsuitable software programmes for libraries, ‘user‐friendliness’ of programmes, ‘home made’ library programmes, training and the unwillingness of a few staff members to become computer literate are named and discussed. Some solutions to overcome these problems are discussed: communication, training, the use of manuals, hardware and software support and user groups.

Abstract
The news last December that the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration had banned at central level about eleven million pounds of chicken for human food because minute quantities of the synthetic oestrogen, stilboestrol, had been found in them was bound before very long to produce lurid speculation on the possible effects on humans, quite apart from the fact that the substance is considered to be a possible carcinogen. The speculation has arrived. It is in fact more than speculation, since it alleges that because Americans consume so much chicken—more than any other race—they must also be consuming more synthetic oestrogens and that American men are acquiring feminine curves and contours, a direct result of upsetting their oestrogen balance by eating oestrogenised chicken! Without doubt, American men do bulge in various places, as men who eat and sit too much have always done, but the bulges do not have a feminine distribution! All of which is by no means to say that the increasing use of synthetic hormones and similar substances is without risk or that some form of control is not necessary, even though their object is an increase in food production.

Purpose
Within a Europe highly concerned about becoming a zero net greenhouse gas emission continent, and where the circular economy is strongly promoted as a proper lever in this sense, the present paper aims to raise awareness regarding best practices towards a “green” food retail sector in Romania. In a more specific regard, the “green” practices implemented by the main food retailers acting on the Romanian market are analysed, focusing on what these practices are, how they are measured and how transparent they are.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is based on desk research consisting in the identification and content analysis of the “green”-related information outlined on the food retailers' websites and in their published sustainability reports.
Findings
Food retailers are concerned about becoming carbon neutral, implementing the “green” measures outlined in the paper through the lenses of waste management, minimising/eradicating plastic, reducing/eliminating food waste, energy efficiency/saving, water consumption efficiency, protecting biodiversity, transportation efficiency and compliance with standards/obtained certifications/adherence to pacts. In addition to actions, food retailers are concerned about their proper, continuous monitorization, tackling key indicators in four directions: overall impact on the environment, impact on resources, waste impact and transportation impact.
Originality/value
The paper provides a novel, exhaustive best practices guide to encourage the transition to a “greener” activity in the Romanian food retail sector, highlighting both action measures and key assessment indicators.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to improve the mechanical and tribological properties of Si3N4 ceramics and to make the application of Si3N4 ceramics as tribological materials more extensive.
Design/methodology/approach
Si3N4-based composite ceramics (SN-2L) containing nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) were prepared by hot press sintering process through adding 2 Wt.% nanolignin as precursor to the Si3N4 matrix, and the dry friction and wear behaviors of Si3N4-based composite against TC4 disc were performed at the different loads by using pin-on-disc tester.
Findings
The friction coefficients and wear rates of SN-2L composite against TC4 were significantly lower than those of the single-phase Si3N4 against TC4 at the load range from 15 to 45 N. At higher load of 45 N, SN-2L/TC4 pair presented the lowest friction coefficient of 0.25, and the wear rates of the pins and discs were as low as 1.76 × 10−6 and 2.59 × 10−4mm3/N·m. The low friction and wear behavior could be attributed to the detachment of N-GQDs from the ceramic matrix to the worn surface at the load of 30 N or higher, and then an effective lubricating film containing N-GQDs, SiO2, TiO2 and Al2SiO5 formed in the worn surface. While, at the same test condition, the friction coefficient of the single-phase Si3N4 against TC4 was at a range from 0.45 to 0.58. The spalling and cracking morphology formed on the worn surface of single-phase Si3N4, and the wear mechanism was mainly dominated by adhesive and abrasive wear.
Originality/value
Overall, a high-performance green ceramic composite was prepared, and the composite had a good potential for application in engineering tribology fields (such as aerospace bearings).
