Abstract
The installation of data networks which is now happening world wide, will make it possible to connect to a large number of computer systems from a single terminal. Before anything can be achieved by such connections a great deal of effort must go into homogenising service access procedures. This is going to be a crucial area of development. On an experimental basis attempts have been made to tackle this problem with encouraging results. A rethink of the distribution of functions in the network environment is necessary to optimise this homogenising of service access procedures.
