Abstract
Purpose
Research concludes that supervisor conflict is a primary antecedent of employee counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs). However, previous studies mainly focused on direct supervisor conflict, with indirect supervisor conflict understudied. To fill the research gap, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between indirect supervisor conflict and employee CWBs and the buffering effect of emotional intelligence on indirect supervisor conflict–CWB relationships in two studies.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used time-lagged design (Study 1) and longitudinal design (Study 2) with multisource data to test the theoretical model presented in this study.
Findings
The positive relationship between indirect supervisor conflict and CWBs were consistently supported with self-report CWBs but not with coworker-report CWBs. SEA and OEA were found to buffer the indirect supervisor conflict–CWB relationships with both self-report and coworker-report CWBs.
Originality/value
The study suggests that while covert and implicit, indirect supervisor conflict could drive employees to engage in CWBs that impose a threat to organization and its members. The emotional-appraisal aspect of emotional intelligence (i.e. SEA and OEA) could help employees to better cope with indirect supervisor conflict and mitigate employees’ engagement in CWBs.

This study aims to investigate the effects of ball–material ratio on the properties of mixed powders and Cu-Bi self-lubricating alloy materials.
Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the effects of ball–material ratio on the properties of mixed powders and Cu-Bi self-lubricating alloy materials.
Design/methodology/approach
Cu-Bi mixed powder was ball milled at different ball–material ratios, and the preparation of Cu-Bi alloy materials was achieved through powder metallurgy technology. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were conducted to study the microstructure and phase composition of the mixed powder. The apparent density and flow characteristics of mixed powders were investigated using a Hall flowmeter. Tests on the crushing strength, impact toughness and tribological properties of self-lubricating alloy materials were conducted using a universal electronic testing machine, 300 J pendulum impact testing machine and M200 ring-block tribometer, respectively.
Findings
With the increase in ball–material ratio, the spherical copper matrix particles in the mixed powder became lamellar, the mechanical properties of the material gradually reduced, the friction coefficient of the material first decreased and then stabilized and the wear rate decreased initially and then increased. The increase in the ball–material ratio resulted in the fine network distribution of the Bi phase in the copper alloy matrix, which benefitted its enrichment on the worn surface for the formation a lubricating film and improvement of the material’s tribological performance. However, a large ball–material ratio can excessively weaken the mechanical properties of the material and reduce its wear resistance.
Originality/value
The effects of ball–material ratio on Cu-Bi mixed powder and material properties were clarified. This work provides a reference for the mechanical alloying process and its engineering applications.

This study aims to investigate the effect of steel fibers on the mechanical and tribological properties of FeS/Cu–Bi self-lubricating materials.
Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the effect of steel fibers on the mechanical and tribological properties of FeS/Cu–Bi self-lubricating materials.
Design/methodology/approach
The microstructure of the material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Tests on the crushing strength, impact toughness and tribological properties of materials were conducted using a universal electronic testing machine, a 300 J pendulum impact testing machine and an M200 ring-block sliding tribometer, respectively.
Findings
The mechanical properties of the material initially increased and then stabilized with increased copper-plated steel-fiber length. When the length of the copper-plated steel fiber was 7 mm, the mechanical properties of the material reached stability. Compared with the material without a copper-plated steel fiber, its crushing strength and impact toughness increased by 32.6% and 53%, respectively. A copper-plated steel fiber with a length of 7 mm lay flat in a copper matrix can strengthen the friction interface and enrich the lubricant. Accordingly, the antifriction and wear resistance of the materials increased by 17.6% and 55%, respectively.
Originality/value
The effects of copper-plated steel fibers on the properties of FeS/Cu–Bi self-lubricating materials were clarified. This work can serve as a reference for improving material performance and its engineering applications.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to improve detection efficiency of fluorescence biosensor or a graphene field-effect transistor biosensor. Graphene field-effect transistor biosensing and fluorescent biosensing were integrated and combined with magnetic nanoparticles to construct a multi-sensor integrated microfluidic biochip for detecting single-stranded DNA. Multi-sensor integrated biochip demonstrated higher detection reliability for a single target and could simultaneously detect different targets.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, the authors integrated graphene field-effect transistor biosensing and fluorescent biosensing, combined with magnetic nanoparticles, to fabricate a multi-sensor integrated microfluidic biochip for the detection of single-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Graphene films synthesized through chemical vapor deposition were transferred onto a glass substrate featuring two indium tin oxide electrodes, thus establishing conductive channels for the graphene field-effect transistor. Using π-π stacking, 1-pyrenebutanoic acid succinimidyl ester was immobilized onto the graphene film to serve as a medium for anchoring the probe aptamer. The fluorophore-labeled target DNA subsequently underwent hybridization with the probe aptamer, thereby forming a fluorescence detection channel.
Findings
This paper presents a novel approach using three channels of light, electricity and magnetism for the detection of single-stranded DNA, accompanied by the design of a microfluidic detection platform integrating biosensor chips. Remarkably, the detection limit achieved is 10 pm, with an impressively low relative standard deviation of 1.007%.
Originality/value
By detecting target DNA, the photo-electro-magnetic multi-sensor graphene field-effect transistor biosensor not only enhances the reliability and efficiency of detection but also exhibits additional advantages such as compact size, affordability, portability and straightforward automation. Real-time display of detection outcomes on the host facilitates a deeper comprehension of biochemical reaction dynamics. Moreover, besides detecting the same target, the sensor can also identify diverse targets, primarily leveraging the penetrative and noninvasive nature of light.

This study aims to research properties of Cu/SAC0307 mixed solder balls/Cu joints with different Zn-particles content at low-temperature under ultrasonic assisted.
Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to research properties of Cu/SAC0307 mixed solder balls/Cu joints with different Zn-particles content at low-temperature under ultrasonic assisted.
Design/methodology/approach
A new method that 1µm Zn particles and Sn-0.3Ag-0.7 (SAC0307) with a particle size of 25–38 µm were mixed to fill the joint and successfully achieved micro-joining of Cu/Cu under ultrasonic-assisted at low temperature.
Findings
The results showed that with a continuous increase in the Zn-particle content, the interfacial intermetallic compounds (IMCs) of the upper and lower interfaces of joints gradually changed from scallop-shaped Cu6Sn5 to wavy-shaped Cu5Zn8. Moreover, the IMC thickness of the upper/lower interface of joints first decreased and then increased with increasing Zn-particle content. The shear strengths of joints increased with Zn-particle content, the shear strength of joints went to a maximum of 29.76 MPa when the Zn-particle content was 40%, an increase of 62.6% compared to joints without Zn particles. However, as the Zn-particle content continued to increase, the shear strengths of the joints decreased. Additionally, when the Zn content increased to 50%, because the oxidation degree of Zn particles increased, the joints were mainly broken among Zn particles.
Originality/value
A new method that 1µm Zn particles and Sn-0.3Ag-0.7 (SAC0307) with a particle size of 25–38 µm were mixed to fill the Cu/Cu joint at 180°C.

This paper aims to investigate the influence of oil–air lubrication flow behavior on point contact sliding wear characteristics.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the influence of oil–air lubrication flow behavior on point contact sliding wear characteristics.
Design/methodology/approach
Oil–air lubrication equations between point contact counterparts were established on the basis of volume of fluid model. The effects of oil supply and injection azimuth on oil-phase volume fraction and its pressure distribution were simulated with commercial software Fluent. Characteristics of point contact sliding wear were then tested with an MFT-3000 friction tester under oil–air lubrication condition. The influence of flow behavior on wear characteristic was investigated combined with numerical and experimental results. The wear mechanism was revealed using SEM, EDS and ferrography.
Findings
When air supply speed is constant, the oil-phase volume fraction increases with the increase in oil supply, which helps form continuous oil film and decrease the sliding wear evidently. The injection angle and distance considerably influence the oil–air flow behavior. When injecting at a certain distance and angle, the oil-phase volume fraction reaches its maximum, and the abrasion loss is minimal. Under the test conditions in this study, abrasive particles are mainly debris and a few spiral cuttings. The wear mechanism is abrasive wear.
Originality/value
The influence of the behavior of oil–air lubrication flow on the characteristic of point contact sliding wear is analyzed. This work provides guidance for the application of oil–air lubrication technology in point contact friction pairs.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the effects of different ultrasonic-assisted loading degrees on the microstructure, mechanical properties and the fracture morphology of Cu/Zn+15%SAC0307+15%Cu/Al solder joints.
Design/methodology/approach
A new method in which 45 μm Zn particles were mixed with 15% 500 nm Cu particles and 15% 500 nm SAC0307 particles as solders (SACZ) and five different ultrasonic loading degrees were applied for realizing the soldering between Cu and Al at 240 °C and 8 MPa. Then, SEM was used to observe and analyze the soldering seam, interface microstructure and fracture morphology; the structural composition was determined by EDS; the phase of the soldering seam was characterized by XRD; and a PTR-1102 bonding tester was adopted to test the average shear strength.
Findings
The results manifest that Al–Zn solid solution is formed on the Al side of the Cu/SACZ/Al joints, while the interface IMC (Cu5Zn8) is formed on the Cu side of the Cu/SACZ/Al joints. When single ultrasonic was used in soldering, the interface IMC (Cu5Zn8) gradually thickens with the increase of ultrasonic degree. It is observed that the proportion of Zn or ZnO areas in solders decreases, and the proportion of Cu–Zn compound areas increases with the variation of ultrasonic degree. The maximum shear strength of joint reaches 46.01 MPa when the dual ultrasonic degree is 60°. The fracture position of the joint gradually shifts from the Al side interface to the solders and then to the Cu side interface.
Originality/value
The mechanism of ultrasonic action on micro-nanoparticles is further studied. By using different ultrasonic loading degrees to realize Cu/Al soldering, it is believed that the understandings gained in this study may offer some new insights for the development of low-temperature soldering methodology for heterogeneous materials.

Abstract
Purpose
With continuous concerning on the toxic of element Pb, Pb-free solder was gradually used to replace traditional Sn-Pb solder. However, during the transition period from Sn-Pb to Pb-free solder, mixing of Sn-Pb and Pb-free is inevitable occurred in certain products, and in China where Sn-Pb solder was still used extensively in certain areas especially. Correspondingly, understanding reliability of Sn-Pb solder joints was very important, and further studies were needed.
Design/methodology/approach
Thermal shock test between −55°C and 125 °C was conducted on Sn-37Pb solder bumps in the BGA package to investigate the microstructure evolution and the growth mechanism of interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) layer. The effects of thermal shock on the mechanical property and fracture behavior of Sn-37Pb solder bumps were discussed.
Findings
Pb-rich phase was coarsened and voids were increased at first; Pb-rich phase was refined and voids were decreased secondly with the increase of thermal shock cycles; the shear strength of solder bumps was slightly decreased after thermal shock, but was back up to 73.67MPa at 2,000 cycles; interfacial IMCs of solder bumps was from typical scallop-type into smooth, the composition of IMCs was from Cu6Sn5 into Cu6Sn5 and Cu3Sn after thermal shock with 1,500 and 2,000 cycles; 20.0 per cent of solder bumps at 1,500 cycles and 9.5 per cent of solder bumps at 2,000 cycles were failure respectively.
Originality/value
Compared with the board level test method, the impact shear test for the single solder bump is more convenient and economical and is actively pursued by the industries. The shear strength of solder bumps was slightly decreased after thermal shock, but was back up to 73.67 MPa at 2,000 cycles; 20.0 per cent of solder bumps at 1,500 cycles and 9.5 per cent of solder bumps at 2,000 cycles were failure.

This study aims to research properties of Cu/SAC0307 mixed solder balls/Al joints with different bonding temperature under ultrasonic-assisted.

A new method that 1 mm Zn particles and Sn-0.3Ag-0.7 (SAC0307) with a particle size of 25–38 mm were mixed to fill the joint and successfully achieved micro-joining of Cu/Al under ultrasonic-assisted.
Findings
The results indicated that when the bonding temperature was 180°C, there was only one layer of CuZn5 intermetallic compounds (IMCs) at the Cu interface. However, when the bonding temperature was 190°C, 200°C and 210°C, the Cu interface IMCs had two layers: for one layer, the IMCs near the Cu substrate were Cu5Zn8 and for another layer, the IMCs near the solder were CuZn5. In addition, the thickness of the Cu interfacial IMCs increased with the bonding temperature. In particular, the thickness of IMCs at the Cu interface of the Cu/Al joints soldered at 210°C was 4.6 µm, which increased by 139.6% compared with that of the Cu/Al joints soldered at 180°C. However, there was no IMC layer at the Al interface, but there might be a Zn–Al solid solution layer. The shear strength of Cu/Al joints soldered at 180°C was only 15.01 MPa, but as the soldering temperature continued to increase, the shear strength of the Cu/Al joints increased rapidly. When the soldering temperature was 200°C, the shear strength of the Cu/Al joints reached the maximum of 38.07 MPa, which was 153.6% higher than that at 180°C. When the soldering temperature was 180°C, the fracture of Cu/Al joints was mainly on the Al side. However, when soldering temperature was 190°C, 200°C and 210°C, the fracture of Cu/Al joints was mainly broken in the Zn particles layer.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine whether consumers’ lay theories of emotion play a moderating role between self-threat and their choice of threat-coping strategies (direct resolution and escapism) and product preference.
Design/methodology/approach
The present research uses the methods of experimental design and surveys to collect data and verify the hypotheses we assumed.
Findings
Study 1 indicates that in self-threatening situations, people who perceive emotions as fleeting (lasting) are more likely to use a threat-coping strategy of direct resolution (escapism). Study 2 demonstrates that people who believe emotions are fleeting are more likely to choose problem-solving products; people who believe emotions are lasting are more likely to choose emotion-enhancing products. Study 3 further demonstrates that the direct resolution (escapism) strategy plays a mediating role between the interaction effect and consumer preference for problem-solving products (emotion-enhancing products). Study 4 replicates the results of Study 2 by incorporating the manipulation of lay theories of emotion transience in a product evaluation context.
Research limitations/implications
A limitation of the present research is that this paper puts focus on exploring the effects of self-view threat (e.g. intelligence and competence) on consumer product preferences. Another issue for future research is the extent to which emotion-transience theories hold for specific emotions. Given that distinct emotions of the same valence differ in their antecedent appraisals and that specific emotion could lead to different subsequent behaviors (Lerner and Keltner, 2000), future research may need to explore the roles of specific negative emotions triggered by self-threat in consumers’ product choosing behaviors. One potential direction for future research is to examine whether the perceived locus of control affects consumers’ choice of threat-coping strategies and product preferences.
Practical implications
Marketers could use product tactics for motivating consumers to restore their self-perceptions on the threatened attributes and address the self-threat, such as product attributes, advertising copy or promotional appeals that insert people who are more motivated to directly resolve the threat. Marketers can nudge consumers toward a direct resolution strategy by posting prompts such as, “I can do it!” For example, the slogan of Nike – “Just do it” and the 2012 award-winning campaign by Nike Spain have told consumers: “If something is burning you up, burn it up by running” (Allard and White, 2015), which suggests that consumers experiencing self-threat may resolve the negative self-discrepancy through the acquisition of the products in the advertisement. Another important implication suggested by the findings is that product consumption can be a way of helping consumers escape from self-threats. For example, the slogan of Coca-Cola – “Taste the feeling” resonates with consumers and stimulates their basic hedonic needs.
Originality/value
First, this research extends previous research by demonstrating that lay theories of emotion serve as a motivator of the selection of threat-coping strategies. Second, this research is conducive for literature to examine how differences in lay theories of emotion affect consumers’ product-choosing behaviors to cope with self-discrepancies. Third, the present research extends the broad marketing literature by differentiating problem-solving products from emotion-enhancing products.
