Provides an introduction to the papers of the LOEX‐of‐the‐West which concentrated on the theme of collaboration and partnership within the academic library to improve student learning. Looks at the development of information literacy and how academic libraries can use this to expand the field of student learning. Concludes that information technology has changed the face of teaching and learning, offering the opportunity to find and collaborate with new partners.

Abstract
In early 1997, fueled by reports from the university administration of declining enrollments and student retention problems, the University of Oregon Library System formed a task force to explore opportunities to boost student retention. The most popular recommendation from the task force was to develop library courses that would address discipline‐specific information needs in a number of library‐intensive courses, especially in journalism, management, psychology, and women’s studies. In this article, Bell and Benedicto discuss the pilot program that arose out of this recommendation and that was conducted over spring term 1998.

Abstract
Most instruction librarians know that library instruction can often be boring to teach, and boring for students, but we also know the value of library instruction and its importance to our students. So what innovative approaches can we take to spice up our instruction and make the topic more appealing? The authors decided that using humor was the best approach. To this end, they went on a quest to: study and learn about comedy; take what they had learned to make themselves funnier; find ways to incorporate comedy into their library instruction; and share what they had learned with other librarians. The rest is history.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to understand why some Senators choose to use Twitter more frequently than others. Building on past research, which explored causal factors leading to early congressional adoption, theories about why some Senators use Twitter more frequently in their daily communications strategies are developed.
Design/methodology/approach
A “power user” score was developed by evaluating each Senator’s clout, interactivity, and originality on Twitter. These scores are then used as the dependent variable in a regression model to evaluate which factors influence Senators becoming Twitter “power users.”
Findings
The study found that: constituent income is positively correlated with heavy use, but constituent education level is not; the more ideological a Senator is the more he or she will be a Twitter power user; the number of days on Twitter is a significant indicator of advanced Twitter usage; and having staff dedicated to social media is positively correlated with being a Twitter power user.
Research limitations/implications
All Senators in the second session of the 113th Congress (2014) were evaluated. As such, future research hope to expand the data set to additional Senators or the House of Representatives.
Practical implications
A better understanding of why some Senators use Twitter more than others allows insight into constituent communications strategies and the potential implications of real-time communication on representation, and the role of accountability between a Senator and his or her constituents.
Originality/value
The study examines constituent communication by Senators in a new, more interactive medium than previously considered. Additionally, the study places findings about Senator’s constituent communication in the broader context of representation.

Abstract
Purpose
This study explores how one novice teacher navigated his first-year teaching sixth-grade social studies.
Design/methodology/approach
One-sixth grade novice teacher was observed during his unit on the Islamic Empire. The teacher was interviewed before the unit began to understand his approach to combating Islamophobia and interviewed again after the unit so he could reflect on the unit and discuss if he believed he had accomplished his original goal. Classroom artifacts (handouts, slide decks, etc.) were collected.
Findings
The findings highlight the various forces that impacted the decisions the teacher made in the classroom. Lack of support from administration and various colleagues left the teacher feeling overwhelmed and unable to accomplish his goals. While the teacher started the unit with a clear purpose for teaching against Islamophobia, he ultimately taught a unit where students memorized discrete pieces of information.
Originality/value
This study adds to previous research on the need for providing administrative support for novice teachers to be able to teach in ambitious ways by highlighting the numerous shortcomings.

Police employee organizations and unions have been identified as obstacles to police management as well as to policy implementation. While much has been made of the behavior of these organizations, little empirical work has addressed the nature of these organizations in terms of their structure, membership, and perspectives on police labor relationships. These organizations have mainly been examined by the use of police chief perspectives, or case studies of large police unions. This article addresses these issues using a national sample of police employee organizations and unions.

Abstract
Purpose
An organization’s competitive advantage can be strengthened if they are able to identify highly creative individuals. In fact, organizational success in the 21st century may depend upon a firm’s ability to identify highly creative individuals who are able to develop novel and useful ideas, which are the outcome of creativity. The authors posit that Information Technology (IT) plays a significant role in creativity.
Design/methodology/approach
Applying the componential view of creativity, the authors propose the theoretically-derived concept of Individual IT Creativity (IITC). Utilizing a 5-phase methodology, the authors provide a theoretically-derived and rigorously-validated measure of IITC.
Findings
This study demonstrates that IITC is manifested in individuals who (1) possess IT expertise; (2) are motivated by IT tasks and (3) exhibit IT creativity-relevant processes. The authors then develop a scale to measure IITC and examine IITC within a broader nomological network.
Originality/value
This study facilitates the investigation of new streams of research into IITC, including new possible outcomes in addition to IT acceptance.
