Abstract
The Arthur Edwards Building was opened on the 30 October 1982 by the Rt. Hon. Harold Wilson, KG, OBE, FRS, MP in the presence of local and civic dignatories. The occasion was something of a reunion in that Gerry Fowler, Director of the Polytechnic, served as a Minister of State under Sir Harold; and the brother of Lady Mary Wilson was formerly on the staff of West Ham College, which was a constituent college of NELP.
A very successful series of revision lectures for the examinations was arranged by ABE at the Polytechnic of Central London in November.

Abstract
After serving in the RAF just after the war, Denys Page began a career as a Statistician in 1948 at the GEC Research Laboratories, Wembley and subsequently moved to the Southern Electricity Board, National Coal Board and Reed International in that capacity. He developed an interest in Management Training in the mid‐sixties, first in the quantitative field and more recently in Human Resources. Since then he has served for various periods on the staff of North London Polytechnic, Huddersfield Polytechnic, and Kenya Institute of Administration, Nairobi as a Senior Lecturer in Management.

Abstract
A very successful Open Day was held at Rapid Results College in November, when the College staff welcomed 60 guests from professional bodies, banks, building societies, finance houses, companies, and a variety of other organisations. The aim was to give guests an opportunity to find out about the workings of one of the UK's leading correspondence colleges, and to talk to the College about their own particular training needs. This was accomplished by a presentation about the College, followed by a tour of all departments. After lunch guests were split into six discussion groups led by senior staff, to give them an opportunity to air their views on their training requirements. The day was concluded by a talk by Janet Elliott of BBC The Correspondence Route to the National Awards of the Business Education Council. This proved to be most interesting, and stimulated a lively discussion.

Abstract
As [Alexander Graham] Bell raced to perfect his telephone, he was also writing up specifications to be filed with the United States Patent Office in Washington. On March 7, 1876, he was issued patent number 174,465. Meanwhile, Bell had discovered that a wire vibrated by the voice while partially immersed in a conducting liquid, like mercury, could be made to vary its resistance and produce an undulating current. In other words, human speech could be transmitted over a wire. On March 10, 1876, as he and Mr. Watson set out to test this finding, Bell knocked over what they were using as a transmitting liquid – battery acid. Reacting to the spilled acid, Mr. Bell is alleged to have shouted, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want you!” (PBS, 2003)

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore how 11 social studies teacher educators (SSTEs) incorporated race into their social studies methods courses. It examines the instructional practices of the SSTEs using racial-pedagogical-content-knowledge (RPCK) as an analytical framework.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is a qualitative interview study. The data sources included two 40–90 min semi-structured interviews per participant, methods course syllabi and reading lists, and university documents such as departmental mission statements and program course requirements. Data were analyzed using three cycles of coding: descriptive coding, focused coding and analytic generalizations.
Findings
The paper illustrates how the SSTEs incorporated race into their social studies methods courses through developing counter-narrative content knowledge, modeling the application of critical race theory tenets through pedagogical content knowledge, and cultivating a working racial knowledge among pre-service teachers.
Originality/value
This paper extends the literature of the RPCK framework through illustrating many ways each component of RPCK can be applied within a social studies methods course.

Abstract
During the many years of peace perhaps the most depressing thing about libraries was the absence of public interest in them. The newspapers, public men, writers on education, amongst whom were many people who made daily use of libraries, in their public utterances completely ignored them or confined their mention to the mendacious archaism that they were merely purveyors of poor fiction. This was most unsatisfactory, for no institution can rise to its full possibilities unless it is the subject of encouragement and healthy criticism. Now affairs are different. The war has been a crucible in which most things have been tested, and libraries are proving to be no exception.
