Abstract
Aberdeen University Library's digitisation programme has reached an advanced stage, with three projects all designed to deliver images (of a 300‐page medieval liturgical text, of the papers of a nineteenth‐century philosopher, and of 1000 Jacobite engravings) via the Web. A comparison of these projects highlights differences in image capture pathways, quality requirements and file storage solutions.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine how and why outsiders, rather than incumbents, are able to take advantage of technological discontinuities.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper employs a case study of a single innovation that transformed the technology of Formula 1 motor racing.
Findings
The findings show how social capital made up of “weak ties” in the form of informal personal networks, enabled an outsider to successfully make the leap to a new technological regime.
Practical implications
The findings show that where new product development involves a shift to new technologies, social capital can have an important part to play.
Originality/value
It is widely accepted that radical innovations are often competence destroying, making it difficult for incumbents to make the transition to a new technology. The paper's findings show how the social capital of outsiders can place them at a particular advantage in utilizing new technologies.

This article is an updated version of Chapter 6, “Teaching Communication Skills in the United Kingdom”, which appeared in Communication Skills. Volume 1: An International Review, edited by Philip Hills and Margaret McLaren, Croom Helm, London, 1987. Abstract
In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and chronic job discrimination. Additionally, the authors explore the contribution of various forms of social support to that relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
The data for this study were obtained from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the USA (MIDUS). Only those who reported being employed participated in the study (n = 1,150). The variables of interest included BMI, supervisor support, coworker support, family support, friend support, religious support and chronic job discrimination. Analysis included correlations, ANOVA’s and hierarchical linear regression.
Findings
BMI was positively associated with chronic job discrimination. Respondents in the obese and morbidly obese categories reported higher job discrimination compared to normal weight respondents. Family support, supervisor support and coworker support were associated with less reported chronic job discrimination.
Practical implications
Organizational leaders should acknowledge that obesity is associated with discrimination. Organizations should thus create anti-discrimination policies covering weight-based discrimination, conduct sensitivity training for all employees and train and coach supervisors on effective ways of offering support to employees.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the understanding of the role various forms of social support can play in reducing perceptions of chronic job discrimination. The paper is unique in that it considers several sources from which people draw support in managing for stressors.
