This paper looks at the development of prelubes, new coating fluids which can eliminate application of further specialist deep drawing compounds at the press shop. The work carried out by the German Motor Industry, VDA, to establish a specification for prelubes is highlighted, and the full sequence of tests and stages built into this new specification is outlined.

Abstract
SUN and moon and the substantial natural beauty of Folkestone combined to give the Library Association Conference this year an almost ideal setting. Moreover, it was a Conference equable in speech and with an atmosphere of good will and good sense not always present in such variegated company. This postlude to an abominable summer will be remembered with pleasure. One can say that the choice of President was entirely justified. Mr. Sydney, who spoke often with modest, often almost depreciatory tones, proved to be master of the art of handling an audience, deft in phrase, genial in his introductions and words of thanks, and as skilful at the Annual General Meeting in guiding the choppy waves of debate as we could desire him to have been. Further, the Presidential Address was a reflection of many of these qualities and in substance a candid review of the pleasures, opportunities, high aspirations which were those of many librarians but which were so often frustrated by the limitations of local thinking and, often, pinchbeck “economy”. At the same time, he emphasised the great developments that were taking place and the fail that libraries today were becoming more nationally and internationally pervasive and related. It seemed to be a most memorable address.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper seeks to outline the technical characteristics of certain biodegradable lubricants which can lead to potential energy savings.
Design/methodology/approach
Reviews the reasons for introduction of biodegradable lubricants, and describes the outcome of development and establishment of suitable range of lubricants for almost all applications.
Findings
Plant‐based lubricants have low toxicity, they are derived from crop resources, they are recognised as safer to use, and are rapidly biodegradable when spilled on to open land or into water. As such they break down to reduce pollution burden and are favoured by the Environment Agency when used near watercourses. Products have been developed now for almost all applications including hydraulics, engines, transmissions, compressors, metalworking, turbines, and for use in all industry sectors. Latest generation biolubricants, however, give additional advantages above and beyond the original concept to reduce pollution: the latest products have high levels of performance in terms of both loading and temperature. In particular, their frictional characteristics have been shown to be considerably more favourable than those for mineral oil, offering energy reduction during use.
Research limitations/implications
The paper is restricted to findings based on ester‐based synthetic lubricants where the esters have been derived principally from renewable resources.
Practical implications
Quite apart from their environmental attributes, reduced energy consumption and therefore lower variable costs are now possible, and the concept of use of these oils to give distinct savings is becoming recognised.
Originality/value
This study emphasises that distinct advantages for synthetic lubricants, particularly for biodegradable synthetic ester lubricants derived from renewable resources, are now being realised.

Abstract
A public library service is part ot adult education, but it is not the whole of it. This perfectly simple fact is so often overlooked by the extreme protagonists of two schools of thought in modern librarianship. The one, in its enthusiasm, embracing in its library policy everything from providing a book service to organising lectures, discussion groups, plays, cinema shows, musical recitals, and even the inevitable and unfortunate “brains trusts”; the other rigorously excluding everything but an efficient book service. That the former often works its extension wonders with a woefully inadequate book stock, hoping, no doubt, to whip up interest and support locally; and that the other often consciously narrows its definition of book “service” to conserve resources for its primary function, we can readily appreciate. But, after allowing for local conditions, which have a strong influence on the formulation of any intelligent library policy, we often feel that on either side there is a surprising failure to appreciate clear, simple fundamentals.

Abstract
Purpose
An innovative training approach was developed to enable staff working with complex cases, including personality disorder, to reflect on and work with the interpersonal dynamics of their interactions with service users. The aim of this approach is to support effective, compassionate and boundaried care. An overview of the model and development of the training is provided along with presentation and discussion of outcome data. Implications for future practice are also considered.
Design/methodology/approach
One-day workshops were provided within inpatient forensic women’s services. Nine workshops were delivered with 96 multidisciplinary staff having attended in total. Evaluation tools were developed to ascertain participants’ feedback regarding the training including its relevance and potential for impact on practice. Feedback was analysed using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods.
Findings
The evaluation demonstrated that the training was well received by a motivated group of participants and was felt to be relevant to their clinical practice.
Research limitations/implications
The evaluation is limited by the lack of a follow-up to assess the longer-term impacts of the training and whether the positive effects of the training were maintained.
Practical implications
The findings demonstrate that the training can be delivered within a short time frame, which makes the training efficient and cost effective.
Social implications
The training can develop practitioners’ skills in delivering compassionate and boundaried care in line with key NHS drivers for staff working with complex service users.
Originality/value
The 4Ps model enables staff with little or no psychotherapy training to deliver psychologically informed care which takes account of interpersonal dynamics and positively contributes to relational security, with an emphasis on reflecting on self and others.
