Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to detail the research and findings from a piece of work commissioned by the Local Government Association in England, in May 2013 into the current implementation of integrated care.
Design/methodology/approach
The field research was carried out by Integrating Care, a collaborative drawn from leading academics, health and social care executives, analysts and clinicians working in the field of integrated care; along with consultancy support from public sector consultancies PPL and GE Healthcare Finnamore. It comprised a series of local interviews, workshops, modelling and analysis and ongoing engagement.
Findings
The paper describes the outputs that were delivered to support the development of “whole-system” integrated health and social care drawing on national and international best-practice, and knowledge gained from experiences of implementation.
Social implications
The paper concludes by drawing together the key lessons from the overarching analysis of whole-system integration. This includes the opportunities and the complexities of redesigning and re-implementing better co-ordinated health and social care provision at scale, as experienced in England currently.
Originality/value
The paper describes the specific challenges posed through the fieldwork and ongoing development process of integration in England, and the paper reflects upon some of the deeper questions that this has led to. The paper then draws together the research and analysis with emerging, strategic questions around the concept of value in health provision; and begins to question whether this has yet been demonstrated; and, if not, what a demonstration and evidencing of “value” in this context might look like.

Abstract
This year's volume of Political Power and Social Theory marks the end of my tenure as editor of this esteemed journal, truly. Although I composed a very similar sentence a year ago, circumstances beyond my control delayed the transition. Thankfully, our new incoming editor, Professor Julian Go, from the Department of Sociology at Boston University, has already started his tenure as this volume goes to press. In addition to undertaking the review of pending and current incoming manuscripts, he also has contributed to this year's volume by agreeing to guest-edit a special section on empire and colonialism. On behalf of the entire editorial board and our readership, I thank Julian for his work on this volume, welcome him to the helm, and wish him well in future volumes. I look forward to continuing my own commitment to PPST as just another member of the editorial board. In the meantime, we can expect some new ideas and new blood in the editorial board as Julian takes over the journal and moves it in new directions. It is an exciting time to consider changes in the field of comparative-historical sociology, as the discipline seeks to accommodate both old and new trends as well as the transforming spatial scales in which political power and social theory are increasingly embedded.

Abstract
This paper examines how a beginning teacher in Virginia and a beginning teacher in Florida make sense of the high-stakes tests in their state. By examining beginning teachers in two states where the tests are so very different, we gain important insight into whether there are similarities and differences across states and how the nature of the test affects the teaching and learning of history. We first offer insight into the context of accountability in Virginia and Florida and then discuss what ambitious teaching and learning look like in these states as informed by the literature. Then, we turn to our research methods, findings, and implications for the field of social studies.

Abstract
This paper explores the perceptions of prisoners to the barriers and opportunities for managing long term conditions in a prison setting. A qualitative study using semi‐structured interviews was conducted with prisoners from two local prisons in England. All the prisoners involved in the study had a long term condition and were attending an Expert Patients Programme (EPP) course, a lay‐led self care programme. A number of themes emerge from the data in relation to the impact prison has had on lifestyle and control of long term conditions. The structured prison regime allowed some to regain control over previously chaotic lifestyles but the lack of access to a healthy diet and exercise facilities as well as lack of opportunities to practice new health behaviours learnt whilst in prison, prevented a healthier lifestyle being adopted. Another main theme was in relation to the ability of prisoners to negotiate access to health care services and professionals. The study found a number of pre‐existing factors which would need to be addressed if prisoners were to become fully engaged in future health initiatives, such as EPP.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a commentary on the paper “Supporting people with learning disabilities to make and maintain intimate relationships”.
Design/methodology/approach
Comparison of the sexual rights of persons with disability, as outlined in the 2006 Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, with research on actual policy and practice.
Findings
The sexual expression of persons with learning disability remains suppressed by those in positions of power, such as parents and service providers.
Originality/value
While there remains a long way to go, the commentary points towards examples of empowering policies and good practice that may shift the discourse towards sexual rights and emancipation of persons with learning disability.

Abstract
Purpose
Patient value co-creation represents a key research priority and an essential determinant of health care service outcomes. Yet few studies empirically examine the factors that motivate patients to participate actively in value co-creation. The purpose of this paper is to seek to identify the motivators of such activities in online health communities (OHC) and examine their specific and unique effects.
Design/methodology/approach
A netnographic study helps identify the motivators that drive patients’ value co-creation activities in OHCs. The combination of these results with social identity theories suggest the hypotheses; mediation analyses test the hypothesized model with data collected from eight OHCs that address both life-threatening and non-life-threatening illnesses.
Findings
The netnographic results show that social identity drives patients’ value co-creation activities. Interactions among OHC members and the cognitive resources of the OHC both contribute to the development of its social identity. Furthermore, benevolence trust, shared vision, and shared language determine how likely an OHC member is to identify with a particular OHC, which further influences his or her value co-creation activities in that OHC.
Originality/value
Although value co-creation is critical to the health care sector, few studies examine antecedents of patient value co-creation empirically. This study represents an initial attempt to do so by combining innovative netnographic analyses with mediation analyses.
