Abstract

Purpose

The sustainable development of contractor organizations depends highly on bidding decision-making of projects. This current study, leveraging the risk decision-making theory, attempts to elucidate the process of contractors’ bid/no-bid decision-making and reveal how the process is influenced by their perception of risk. In particular, this study aims to explore the multiple mediating effects of contractors’ trust in owners and risk perception in explaining the relationship between contractual governance outlined in owners’ bidding documents and the bid/no-bid decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire survey was used to obtain data from the Chinese construction industry. The PLS-SEM technique was employed to analyze a dataset of 557 available questionnaires.

Findings

The findings indicate that (1) the contractual governance provided by owners’ bidding documents positively impacts contractors’ bid/no-bid decisions; (2) both risk perception and trust serve as multiple mediators in this relationship and (3) trust mediates the relationship between contractual governance and contractors’ risk perception.

Originality/value

Drawing upon the risk decision-making theory, this study proposes a multiple mediation model for understanding contractors’ bid/no-bid decision-making processes. It contributes to a better understanding of contractors’ bidding decision-making mechanisms, thereby offering theoretical guidance for contractors to make reasonable and informed risk decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

Current lubrication analyses of misaligned journal bearings were generally performed under some given preconditions. To make the lubrication analysis closer to the actual situation and usable to the journal bearing design, the purpose of this paper was to calculate the lubrication characteristics of misaligned journal bearings considering the viscosity-pressure effect of the oil, the surface roughness and the elastic deformation of the journal bearing at the same time.

Design/methodology/approach

The lubrication of bearings was analyzed using the average Reynolds equation. The deformation of the bearing surface under oil film pressure was calculated by a compliance matrix method. The compliance matrix was established by finite element analysis of the bearing housing. The viscosity-pressure and viscosity–temperature equations were used in the analysis.

Findings

The oil viscosity-pressure relationship has a significant effect on the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings. The surface roughness will affect the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings when the eccentricity ratio and angle of journal misalignment are all large. The directional parameter of the surface has an obvious effect on the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings. The deformation of the bearing surface has a remarkable effect on the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings.

Originality/value

The lubrication characteristics of misaligned journal bearings were calculated considering the viscosity-pressure effect of the oil, the surface roughness and the elastic deformation of the journal bearing at the same time. The results of this paper are helpful to the design of the bearing.

Abstract

Purpose

Current lubrication analyses of misaligned journal bearings are generally performed under some given preconditions. The purpose of this paper is to calculate the lubrication characteristics of a journal bearing with journal misalignment caused by shaft deformation under load, considering the surface roughness, thermal effect and (thermal and elastic) deformation of bearing surface simultaneously.

Design/methodology/approach

The lubrication of bearing was analyzed by average flow model based generalized Reynolds equation. The deformation of bearing surface under pressure or heat of oil film was calculated by compliance matrix method. The compliance matrix was established by finite element analysis. The temperature distributions of oil film and bearing were calculated by energy equation and heat conduction equation.

Findings

When the thermal deformation of bearing and journal surface is considered, the radius clearance affects not only the value of the maximum oil film pressure and minimum oil film thickness, but also the distribution of oil film pressure and thickness of misaligned bearing. The effect of thermal deformation of bearing on the performance of misaligned bearing is larger than that of elastic deformation of bearing. Whether or not the surface roughness affects the performance of misaligned bearing and the affecting level depends greatly on the condition of deformation of bearing surface.

Originality/value

The surface roughness, thermal effect and (thermal and elastic) deformation of bearing surface were considered simultaneously in the thermoelastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis of bearing with journal misalignment caused by shaft deformation under load. The results of this paper are helpful to the design of the bearing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of perceived benefits, i.e. utilitarian value, hedonic value and social value, as well as perceived risk, on purchase intention in social commerce context.

Design/methodology/approach

To cast light on the factors motivating users’ intention to purchase in the context of social commerce, data of 277 users of social commerce in China were collected via an online survey.

Findings

Results show that satisfaction significantly and positively affects users’ purchase intention in social commerce context. In addition, utilitarian, hedonic and social values have significant and positive impacts on satisfaction and purchase intention; and utilitarian value is found to be the most salient factor influencing purchase intention, while hedonic value has the greatest effect on satisfaction. Moreover, perceived risk significantly and negatively affects satisfaction.

Originality/value

Extant research on social commerce has mainly focused on investigating how the general perceived value affects user behavior, but has less considered different dimensions of perceived value. Moreover, prior studies have explored the roles of utilitarian and hedonic values on user behavior; however, there is a lack of research on the effect of social value. The current study attempts to fill these research gaps.

Abstract

Purpose

This study empirically examined four value attributes (e.g. conditional value, functional value, epistemic value and price consciousness) influencing young customers’ attitudes, word-of-mouth (WOM) and continuous usage intentions. Subjective norm was positioned as the moderator, while WOM was identified as the mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected data from 252 Chinese young customers using purposive sampling technique and utilized PLS-SEM to examine the interrelationships among variables.

Findings

The findings confirmed that the four value attributes (i.e. conditional value, functional value, epistemic value and price consciousness) significantly influence young consumers' attitudes toward pre-made dishes (PMDs). Additionally, attitudes and WOM positively influence continuous usage intention, with WOM acting as a mediator between attitudes and continuous usage intentions. Furthermore, subjective norm partially moderates the value-attitude-behavior (VAB) model.

Practical implications

PMDs manufacturers should take into account the consumption values and price consciousness of young customers when developing marketing campaigns. Subjective norm and WOM continue to be key factors in enhancing continuous intention.

Originality/value

This study expands the applicability of the VAB model, the theory of consumption value (TCV), and the theory of planned behavior (TPB), enriching the literature on PMDs by examining four value attributes and moderating factors influencing continuous usage intention.

Abstract

Purpose

A large number of competitors springing up at the same time is a unique phenomenon to emerging markets. How to promote product sales and improve platform performance through appropriate advertising communication strategies is not only an actual problem for the P2P platforms that are committed to long-term and stable operations but also an academic problem in marketing.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected a total of 1960 pieces of panel data of the P2P platforms and constructed a panel data analysis model after filtering.

Findings

The empirical analysis reveals the following: the prevention-focus advertising has a greater impact on platform trading volume, compared with the promotion-focus advertising, and the impact is positively significant; the platform which has a third-party cooperation should use promotion-focus advertising, while prevention-focus advertising is a better choice for the platform without a third-party cooperation. Furthermore, the effects of prevention-focus advertising and promotion-focus advertising on the platforms using individual projects and platforms using organization projects differ.

Originality/value

The results of this study have some reference to the selection of advertising communication strategies for the high-risk financial products.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the process of rapid prototyping eddy current sensors using 3D printing technology. Making full use of the advantages of 3D printing, the authors study on a new method for fabrication of an eddy current sensor.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors establish a 3D model using SolidWorks. And the eddy current sensor is printed by the fused deposition modeling method.

Findings

Measurement results show that the 3D printing eddy current sensor has a wider linear measurement range and better linearity than the traditional manufacturing sensor. Compared to traditional eddy current sensor fabrication method, this 3D printed sensor can be fabricated at a lower cost, and the fabrication process is more convenient and faster.

Practical implications

This demonstrated 3D printing process can be applied to the 3D printing of sensors of more sophisticated structures that are difficult to fabricate using conventional techniques.

Originality/value

In this work, the process of rapid prototyping eddy current sensors using 3D printing is presented. Sensors fabricated with the 3D printing possess lots of merits than traditional manufactures. 3D printed sensors can be customized according to the configuration of the overall system, thus reducing the demand of sensor's rigid mounting interfaces. The 3D printing also reduce design costs as well as shortens the development cycle. This allows for quick translation of a design from concept to a useful device.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to control the oxidation resistance of Co-based deformed superalloys by adding trace elements Hf and Si.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects and mechanism of trace elements Hf and Si on the oxidation behavior of Co-Ni-Al-W-based forged superalloys were investigated by cyclic oxidation at 900°C.

Findings

The results show that the addition of trace elements Hf and Si does not affect the type of surface oxides of Co-Ni-based superalloys, and the oxidation layers of the alloys are TiO2, spinel, Cr2O3, TaTiO4, Al2O3 and TiN from outside to inside. However, the addition of elements can affect the activity of Cr and Ti elements; decrease the formation of TiO2 and TaTiO4 layers, which are harmful to the oxidation performance; and then improve the oxidation resistance of the alloy.

Originality/value

The relevant research results can not only optimize the microalloying element content of Co-Ni-Al-W-based superalloys, but also provide a new perspective for the composition optimization design of superalloys.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the factors driving an individual’s behavioural intention to adopt mobile learning in higher education.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from university students in China via a survey. A total of 192 valid responses were collected. Structural equation modelling was used to assess the research model.

Findings

The results show that both task and technology characteristics have significant impacts on task-technology fit (TTF), which in turn influences attitude. And attitude significantly affects behavioural intention. Regarding the factors, attitude was found to be the most influential predictor of mobile library adoption intention. In addition, the results provide strong support for the moderating effects of gender and experience on the relationship between TTF and behavioural intention.

Originality/value

Extant research on mobile learning has mainly focused on investigating how user perceptions of mobile technology affect user adoption but has rarely considered the impact of TTF. This study attempts to fill this gap.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to the special service environment of superalloys, this paper aims to obtain effects of temperature and Ti addition on high temperature oxidation behavior of Co-Al-W-B alloys.

Design/methodology/approach

Isothermal oxidation experiment of Co-Al-W-based alloys were carried out at 800°C, 900°C and 1000°C for different times (3, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 h) referring to the method of HB5258-2000. Oxidation weight gain curves and oxidation products were detected.

Findings

The results showed that the average oxidation rates of Co-Al-W-B alloy at 800 °C and 900 °C were 0.489 g·m−2·h−1 and 0.888 g·m−2·h−1, respectively, which belonged to an antioxidant grade. However, the average oxidation rate at 1000 °C was 2.068 g m−2·h−1, belonging to the secondary oxidation resistance class. In the alloy with Ti addition, dense Ti oxides film were formed at the early oxidation stage and then gradually diffused later, which can increase the oxidation resistance of the alloys to some extent. By analyzing the oxidation products of Co-Al-W-B alloy, it was found that a dense Al2O3 layer could be formed when the alloy was oxidized at 800°C. The continuous Al2O3 layer would prevent the oxygen from further spreading and make the alloy into the stable oxidation stage. However, only a non-dense Al2O3 layer were observed with 900°C oxidation.

Originality/value

It can provide references for the composition design, preparation process optimization and protective coating selection of the γ′ phase strengthened cobalt-base superalloys.
