Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine conditions under which good metallurgical bonding was achieved in 3D objects formed by depositing tin droplets layer by layer.

Design/methodology/approach

Molten tin droplets (0.18‐0.75 mm diameter) were deposited using a pneumatic droplet generator on an aluminum substrate. The primary parameters varied in experiments were those found to most affect bonding between droplets on different layers: droplet temperature (varied from 250 to 325°C) and substrate temperature (varied from 100 to 190°C). Droplet generation frequency was kept low enough (1‐10 Hz) that each layer of droplets solidified and cooled down before another molten droplet impinged on it.

Findings

In this paper, a one dimensional heat transfer model was used to predict the minimum droplet and substrate temperatures required to remelt a thin layer of the substrate and ensure good bonding of impinging droplets. Cross‐sections through samples confirmed that increasing either the droplet temperature or the substrate temperature to the predicted remelting region produces good bonding between deposition layers.

Originality/value

This paper used a practical model to provide reasonable prediction of conditions for droplet fusion which is essential to droplet‐based manufacturing. The feasibility of fabricating 3D metal objects by deposition of molten metal droplets has been well demonstrated.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether sell-side equity analysts use labor cost information when forming expectations of future earnings. The availability of disaggregated earnings components will benefit financial statement users to the extent that the additional information released by a firm is useful to infer differential persistence of disaggregated earnings components.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper employs ordinary least squares, logit, and two-stage Heckman (1979) regressions which test whether analysts incorporate labor cost information into their earnings forecasts after controlling for a managerial self-selection to disclose labor costs, and further test whether a firm’s decision to voluntarily disclose labor costs improves analyst forecast accuracy.

Findings

This research finds that analysts incorporate labor cost information into their earnings forecasts after controlling for other earnings components. More importantly, this research shows that voluntary disclosure of labor cost information is positively associated with analyst forecast accuracy. Additional tests show that the benefit of voluntary labor cost information is more pronounced for firms with high information uncertainty and for analysts with less firm-specific experience and analysts affiliated with small brokerage houses.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the literatures on the effect of labor cost on investors’ behavior and on analyst-specific factors in explaining analyst ability to predict future earnings.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the global phenomenon of BangTan Sonyeondan (BTS), a Korean singing group, from an under-researched art and entertainment market perspective. We introduce a research model to delineate the impacts of leadership motivation, socio-technological practices and global prominence outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

The theoretical foundation clarifies the research context, justifying the relevance of key concepts, linking them to primary research questions and forming the basis for a well-structured empirical investigation. Our research model presents the flows of leadership influence, training practices, technology use and global prominence outcomes. Utilizing a survey instrument, we gathered data from BTS fans and analyzed the empirical findings.

Findings

BTS’s success is attributed to unique factors: (1) upstream flow of leadership influence; (2) process flow of internal service training and technological excellence, fostering stakeholder enthusiasm. The results indicate that service empowerment leadership is crucial in driving talent development and appropriate technology use, enhancing brand reputation. Fan loyalty and collective passion are key moderators in these dynamics.

Research limitations/implications

While focused on BTS, our findings have broader applicability in entertainment organizations, underscoring the relevance of socio-technological theory in understanding phenomena similar to BTS’s success.

Practical implications

Long-term brand performance in service organizations extends beyond financial metrics and necessitates empowering service leadership, training for key performers, technological infrastructure and managing personal interactions and group dynamics.

Originality/value

This study is unique in applying a leadership motivation perspective and socio-technological theory to BTS’s long-term success, utilizing BTS fans’ views to examine and assess their success factors and outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

When catastrophic disasters recently occurred, digital volunteer networks formed by the public emerged across the globe. They aggregated, analyzed and visualized disaster data. Those volunteer networks sometimes shared their data with formal response organizations. Such data sharing and integration increased the capacity of formal response organizations for dealing with disasters. However, despite the emergence and contributions of digital volunteer networks, the literature has been focused primarily on the role of formal response organizations such as emergency management agencies and the Red Cross. The purpose of this paper is to describe how technical and organizational factors influence collaboration between digital volunteer networks and formal response organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

This research employs a case study method, focusing on the 2015 Nepal earthquake.

Findings

This study found that information technology and a shared understanding of disaster situations and how to address disasters are key determinants of collaboration between digital volunteer networks and formal response organizations.

Originality/value

This research is expected to contribute to building an integrated emergency response system in the information age.

Abstract

Nations are currently facing two big movements: globalization of the market and need for increasing competitiveness. Liberalization and deregulation in international trade, finance and investment have drastically reduced global transaction costs and advanced the integration of global markets. But they have simultaneously restricted a range of domestic economic policy options. Despite so, national competitiveness has to be continuously cultivated, so that a nation can fully make use of comparative advantages in the global market. Then, strongly embedded in socio‐economic conditions, national competitiveness requires highly efficient and effective systems of production that match both domestic socio‐economic and global market conditions. Globalization of the market and developing national competitiveness are basically contradictory: globalization compels the development of mechanisms to generate allocative‐efficiency, while national competitiveness requires the development of systems that strengthen national capability and optimize X‐efficiency embedded in socio‐economic conditions. Coping with the two contradictory trends requires the open and flexible adaptation of existing systems to global market conditions, resulting in path dependent globalization. Recent financial deregulation in Japan is a good example, that shows a painful process of path dependent globalization, maintaining national competitiveness while openly and flexibly transferring socio‐economic conditions to suit to new global conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to develop and test a model explaining users’ intention to adopt online games in China. Through theories from diverse fields of information systems research, the authors aim to examine and validate antecedents of users’ intentions to play online games.

Design/methodology/approach

The model proposes subjective norms and perceived control as antecedents to technology acceptance model (TAM) related beliefs, while suggesting convenience of operator, reality of design, provision of information and sense of belonging as antecedents of flow. The authors study the causal relations between the antecedents and usage intention by using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the causalities in the proposed model.

Findings

The results indicate that perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), flow and subjective norms are direct predictors of Chinese online games users’ intentions. Subjective norm and sense of belonging are shown to be important predictors of PU, while provision of information reveals an important negative influence on PU. At the same time, system quality shows no significant influence on PU. Perceived control and convenience of operator are both antecedents of PEOU. Furthermore, except for the sense of belonging, the proposed four antecedents of flow are tested for their effect on PU.

Originality/value

This research systematically includes relevant antecedents in MIS research to test online game users’ intention to adopt online games. It also provides some managerial insights that can guide Chinese online game companies to improve their games to attract users, and help foreign online game companies to make strategic plans to enter the huge Chinese online game market.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to establish an evaluation model for business value of a company's existing patents portfolio to improve the performance of the technology development and the company’s competitiveness through identifying the right direction for technology development.

Design/methodology/approach

This research targets 11 leading companies in ten manufacturing industries and one e‐business industry and evaluates their existing patents portfolios. This research developed a core business model set by using clustering and classification. For comparative analysis, this research sets NAVER as a leading company and DAUM as a following company in e‐business industry.

Findings

This research proposes nine business model components to evaluate a patent from business perspectives. Second, by evaluating a company's existing patents portfolio in view of business model components, this research proposes the importance of business model components and developed six core business models. Through these role models, companies can analyze the directions for development in the future and find companies with similar characteristics.

Originality/value

This research develops a methodology to provide the direction for technology development of a company by evaluating technologies through the patents portfolio of a company rather than evaluating the value of a single patent. It is different from previous research that evaluates R&D from technology perspectives; this research takes account of the business value of technologies by developing tools in view of business model components.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to estimate an individual’s probability of preservation of the night view of Han-River bridge tax using the contingent valuation method (CVM) and to present the effects of 4Es on experience economy theory.

Design/methodology/approach

The on-site survey was conducted in the 11 district Han-River parks: Gwangnaru, Jamsil, Ttukseom, Jamwon, Banpo, Yeechon, Yeouido, Mangwon, Nanji, Ganseo and Yanghwa district, including 24 bridges such as Banpo, Olympic bridge during 8-9 pm around the lighting and 9-10 pm peak time of lighting.

Findings

Truncated mean willingness-to-pay indicates that the economic value of the night view of Han-River bridge is 49,575 won (about USA $50) per household, which implies the significance of the preservation value of the night view.

Research limitations/implications

This study sets a hypothetical market, and there are limitations on hypothetical bias of the dichotomous choice CVM. For the future study, a survey with a specific real payment vehicle in an attempt to reduce hypothetical bias can be a tool for the prevention of the overestimation.

Practical implications

Through the study, Seoul city has to invest aggressively on the night view landscape business of Han-River bridge, which can become a landmark and has lots of attraction for tourists. As this study’s core aim was to justify the economic value of the night view of the Han-River bridges, the estimated amount strongly supports the lighting business of the Han-River bridge.

Originality/value

The results of this research may help policy-makers of Han-River to establish practical decisions as to whether improving and preserving the Han-River’s night view lighting business are worth the value.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore Accelerators and their practices in sustaining start-ups within their innovative programs for these companies based on the resource-based perspective. Moreover, with an ever-increasing demand for Accelerators amongst start-up companies, this study also demonstrates the importance of Accelerators, as it pertains to new venture creation.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses an exploratory case study approach to examine a comparative view of leading Accelerator companies in the USA and Korea based on resource support.

Findings

The results of this study show that there are a number of differences between Accelerators of the two countries in terms of the resources they support for early-stage start-ups. The findings also show some similarities. However, in Korea, the Accelerator landscape is limited, where mentorship, resources and investments are not readily accessible, resulting in low success rates for Korean start-up companies. These limitations have had a negative trickle-down effect when providing entrepreneurs with strong access to resources and investors, which highly affects the success rates of early-stage start-ups.

Practical implications

In terms of the resource-based theory, this study contributes to the growth of early start-ups by emphasizing the role of the accelerator and suggesting the extent and impact that entrepreneurs have access to resources and investors.

Originality/value

With significant growth in start-ups around the world, the necessity for start-up funding and mentorship has increased drastically. Start-up companies need various types of assets, systems, knowledge and information to achieve their goals. In Accelerators, start-ups receive all the aforementioned resources while also improving their entrepreneurial skills. Start-up companies have many options in seeking investors who support both tangible and intangible resources to boost growth. While there is a wealth of information on traditional funding methods, there are few studies that shed light on the role of Accelerators from the resource-based point of view.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to explore the challenges that Wal‐Mart may face as it expands into the Indian retail market. Wal‐Mart's failures in Germany and South Korea are analyzed to identify learnings that could be utilized in the Indian expansion.

Design/methodology/approach

Dunning's eclectic theory as applied to international expansion is used to analyze Wal‐Mart's advantages and disadvantages in Germany and South Korea. The theory is then applied to India to understand the possible advantages and disadvantages for Wal‐Mart in entering the Indian retail market.

Findings

The key findings of the study are that Wal‐Mart faces many ownership as well as locational disadvantages while expanding in India. These significant challenges need to be well‐understood and suitably addressed for success in the Indian market.

Originality/value

This report makes a contribution towards understanding the challenges in entering an international market using a case study. The study helps analyze international experiences can be leveraged in future plans of international expansion.
