Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the present study is to use an amino-functional polysiloxane for the surface modification of red iron oxide (Fe2O3) pigment particles for their improved dispersion stability and hydrophobicity and to study the chemical interactions of polysiloxanes with the particle surface.

Design/methodology/approach

Surface-treated red Fe2O3 pigment particles were prepared by treatment of the particles with different quantities of the (aminopropylmethylsiloxane)-dimethylsiloxane copolymer in concentrated suspensions in water. The samples were analysed with different instrumental and spectroscopic techniques to study the interaction of the polysiloxane with the particle surface and the effect of the surface treatment of the particles on their dispersion stability and hydrophobicity.

Findings

Chemisorption of the amino-polysiloxane onto the surface of Fe2O3 particles resulted in stable layers which turned out to be helpful in improving greatly the dispersion stability of the particles as shown by the Static Light Scattering and Dynamic Light Scattering results. Formation of a polysiloxane coating onto the surface of the pigment particles was confirmed by studying the interactions of the polymer molecules with Fe2O3 surfaces by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques.

Practical implications

The surface-treated red Fe2O3 particles with improved dispersion stability can be important components of various formulations in applications such as the colouring of the cement or inorganic pigment-based paint formulations.

Originality/value

The study provides mechanistic insights about the interactions of amino-polysiloxane with the red Fe2O3 particles. The process of surface modification of red Fe2O3 particles with the amino-functional polysiloxane showed increased hydrophobicity and dispersion stability which is an important requirement of the pigment-based formulations in real applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Destination management organizations perform a very important role regarding the management of tourism destinations. Destination management systems are a key technological infrastructure for these organizations. However, in the literature, it is not clear what are the factors that promote the implementation of these systems, neither what are the factors that contribute to their success. This study aims to propose and test two research models to overcome these research gaps.

Design/methodology/approach

The first model refers to the determinants of the implementation of destination management systems, and the second model refers to the determinants of the success of those systems. The models are tested with data collected through a questionnaire survey from destination management organizations of five European countries, which are among the leaders in international tourism receipts.

Findings

Concerning the factors that promote the implementation of destination management systems, this study reveals the importance of the diversity of partnerships that the private sector establishes in the destination, of advantages resulting from governance and of partners' involvement in the functions of destination management organizations. Concerning the factors that promote the success of these systems, this study highlights the importance of a phased implementation, the fact that a high number of functionalities in the system prevents success and the importance of having a revenue model that can support financial and operating costs.

Originality/value

The study provides important theoretical and practical contributions to the successful implementation of destination management systems by destination management organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to measure the influence of corruption distance (CD) on foreign direct investment (FDI) with the characteristics of the value function from the Prospect Theory (PT) such as loss aversion and diminishing sensitivity.

Design/methodology/approach

Data are derived from Transparency International and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and tested on the countries China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, Spain and the UK and are analysed with a natural log (LN) regression model.

Findings

The findings indicate a negative asymmetric relationship for China, Germany, Korea, Spain and Russia. This means that negative performance on CD will not have greater impact on FDI outflows than positive performance on CD in the same country. Loss aversion, as well as diminishing sensitivity, as suggested by the PT, cannot be supported with the empirical results.

Originality/value

Its originality lies in contributing and extending knowledge on CD on FDI in several ways. First, it analyses the data of emerging and industrialized countries, namely, Russia, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain and the UK. Second, a potential asymmetric impact is explained by the characteristics of the hypothetical value function of the PT. Third, it seeks empirical evidence by applying an econometric model developed to analyse the variables CD and FDI.

Every employee embodies manifestations of every demographic that attach to him or her different minority and majority statuses at the same time. As these statuses are often related to organizational hierarchies, employees frequently hold positions of dominance and subordination at the same time. Thus, a given individual’s coping strategies (or coping behavior) in terms of minority stress due to organizational processes of hierarchization, marginalization, and discrimination, are very often a simultaneous coping in terms of more than one demographic. Research on minority stress mostly focuses on single demographics representing only single facets of workforce diversity. By integrating the demographics of age, disability status, nationality, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, and religion into one framework, the intersectional model proposed in this chapter broadens the perspective on minorities and related minority stress in the workplace. It is shown that coping with minority stress because of one demographic must always be interpreted in relation to the other demographics. The manifestation of one demographic can limit or broaden one’s coping resources for coping with minority stress because of another dimension. Thus, the manifestation of one demographic can determine the coping opportunities and coping behavior one applies to situations because of the minority status of another demographic. This coping behavior can include disclosure decisions about invisible demographics. Therefore, organizational interventions aiming to create a supportive workplace environment and equal opportunities for every employee (e.g., diversity management approaches) should include more demographics instead of focusing only on few.

Abstract

Widening access to higher education with the aim of creating more social equality (or at least equal opportunities for everyone) is a long-term goal in the higher education policy of the Federal Republic of Germany. Several reforms starting in the 1960s have tried to achieve this aim by establishing new universities and funding regimes, for example introducing a student loan system (‘BAföG’) for students from families with low income or the abolition of tuition fees. As a result, we can speak about a ‘Bildungsexpansion’ (education expansion), because there are more young people in higher education in Germany than ever before. The number of the graduates has also reached record highs. Despite these achievements, access to higher education still reflects social inequalities: There are still 3.3 times more students in higher education who are children of academics than students from a non-academic background (BMBF, 2013). This chapter asks whether German widening access policies have led to greater social equality? The answer: The education expansion has mainly benefited socially advantaged groups from a middle-class background, especially women. Therefore, especially for young men from disadvantaged migrant families with a low income, access to higher education is still very difficult to attain. The experiences of the German reforms clearly show that widening access to higher education has the potential to increase social mobility and to create more social equality, but to achieve this goal there are far more policy measures needed especially policies for direct support (like ‘BAföG’) and encouragement of socially disadvantaged groups.

Abstract

This chapter compares student performance and course satisfaction in two large sections of an introductory financial accounting course. The students in one section used an online homework management system (OHMS), whereas the students in the other section used traditional homework methods. While an OHMS saves instructors’ valuable time, there is little extant research on how these systems affect students. Our study compares several performance measures and a general course satisfaction survey across the two groups of students. The results provide some evidence that an OHMS enhances students’ performance on some of the performance measures. Our results also show that there is no effect on students’ satisfaction in the course.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper compares the introduction of universal long‐term care schemes and the regulations of migrant care work within the framework of multi‐level governance in Austria and Germany. The aim of the paper is twofold. First, it reveals the characteristics of country‐specific universal policy schemes and second, it explains their designs – the new type of universalism and its completion by regulations of migrant care work within the family framework – by the policy‐making process.

Design/methodology/approach

Conceptually, the paper combines approaches within long‐term care research to define dimensions of universalism, as well as on multi‐level governance and new‐institutionalism to examine the policy‐making process. Empirically, Austria and Germany are selected as two cases.

Findings

The findings reveal the significant dimensions of the new type of universalist policy design and of policies towards migrant care work. The country differences are explained by the policy‐making process within countries and with cross‐border effects. In particular, the impact of the disability movement in Austria and the coalition between the political parties in Germany resulted in a country‐specific definition of universalism. The integrated approach towards migrant care work in Austria is contrasted with the fragmented approach in Germany. In both countries, the regulations of migrant care work question the idea of universalism.

Originality/value

The impact of societal actors and their ideas on the creation of a new type of universalism and the interrelated regulation of migrant care work has only rarely been examined. The analysis contributes to an understanding of the policy‐making process and its interrelationship with selected policy designs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the question how context-specific diversity management (DM) is and whether it is transferable by organisations.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors explore context specificity and transferability of DM with the example of an Austrian company in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Based on the relational framework for the transfer of DM practices the authors empirically examine differences between headquarters and subsidiaries.

Findings

The empirical analysis reveals challenges for the transferability of DM and thus different approaches in the analysed company. The authors do not identify a significant transfer of DM practices. The findings are in line with the relational framework and suggest that headquarters must be treated separately from foreign subsidiaries, which theoretical models should take into account.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies would benefit from a more holistic design not only based on the managements’ perceptions. A comparison with the situation in other companies in transition economies would further increase generalisability.

Practical implications

The authors underscore the need for diversity as a strategic approach to management. Organisations benefit from considering context specificity and should be aware that DM practices in headquarters must not be transferable to subsidiaries. Although theoretical models are useful to identify diversity motives and strategies, their application in practice needs consideration of the context.

Originality/value

The paper tackles the issue of context specificity and considers motives and strategies for DM. The case study sheds light on the link between headquarters’ diversity strategy and practice in a subsidiary and contributes to deficient research for transition economies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand how traveling Instagrammers should be characterized by bridging socio-psychological concepts with Instagram usage and travel typologies.

Design/methodology/approach

Using analysis of variance, differences between non-Instagrammers and passive and active users were identified with regard to their personality traits and human values; traveling Instagrammers and their travel types were characterized in more detail using k-means clustering, and, finally, posting behavior was examined using multiple regression.

Findings

The results demonstrate significant differences between the user groups in terms of their personality traits, their human values and their travel behavior. The multiple regressions provide deeper insights into tourists’ Instagram posting.

Research limitations/implications

This study was conducted on 1,100 German travelers, meaning that the results are only valid for this cultural context. All data were collected using an online panel and participants received incentives, and thus extrinsic rewards, instead of using merely intrinsic motivation to take part in the survey.

Originality/value

This study contributes to a better understanding of Instagram usage behavior when traveling and adds valuable insights to this field of research. At the same time, the results are relevant for tourism businesses wishing to optimize their communication and marketing strategies.
