Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to describe the adaptation of an assessment model, the Triage Assessment System (TAS), which is widely used in crisis intervention to understand the human impact of a crisis within an organization.

Design/methodology/approach

After a literature review, the Triage Assessment System is adapted to be applicable to organizations in crisis. Nine characteristics associated with the impact of crises on employees of an organization are discussed.

Findings

Suggestions are made for ways in which organizations can use the TAS to improve their preparation for recovery efforts after a crisis. These suggestions outline ways to use the TAS as well as approaches that consultants may employ when working with organizations. Suggestions are also made for future research using the TAS with organizations. Although developed for individuals, the concepts used in the TAS can also be applied to organizations in crisis.

Originality/value

The article offers practical suggestions to help organizations manage the impact of organizational crises on their employees. Research in this area should help to refine the TAS for organizations, particularly assessment of the severity of organizational reactions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to examine whether polychronicity, an individual difference variable that involves a preference for multitasking, moderates the relationships between work-family conflict (WFC) and two work criteria, job satisfaction and work engagement; second, to examine two measures of polychronicity (the multitasking preference inventory (MPI) and the inventory of polychronic values (IPV)) and investigate whether polychronicity moderates the relationships between WFC and work criteria differently when measured by the MPI or the IPV.

Design/methodology/approach

The study’s sample included 257 respondents from the Amazon Mechanical Turk service who completed an online survey. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to test whether polychronicity moderated the relationships between WFC and two work criteria, job satisfaction and work engagement.

Findings

Polychronicity was found to significantly moderate the relationship between the work engagement and WFC. Follow-up analyses indicated that those who were lower in polychronicity had a significant decrease in work engagement as WFC increased, whereas those who were higher in polychronicity had relatively the same work engagement level regardless of changes in WFC. The results suggest that individuals higher in polychronicity have more personal resources and may be more resilient than those lower in polychronicity when it comes to not letting conflicts between their work and family lives affect how engaged they feel in their work.

Originality/value

This study extends the application of polychronicity to new domains of WFC and work engagement. The current study also contributed to the literature by investigating two measures of polychronicity (MPI and IPV) and finding that the MPI significantly moderated the relationship between WFC and work engagement, but the IPV did not. These findings indicate that there are important differences between the MPI and the IPV, and additional research is needed in comparing these two polychronicity measures.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study whether Peruvian manufacturing firms that implement innovation have positive performance and whether R&D activities moderate these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a data set of Peruvian manufacturing firms from the 2018 National Survey of Innovation, a LOGIT model analysis was applied to 774 companies. In addition, the authors fitted different models into subsamples to explore the moderating effects of R&D on manufacturing firms. Finally, the regression models were computed using R software.

Findings

The results indicate that product, service and marketing innovation are associated positively with an increase in market share, while process and organizational innovations are associated positively with productivity. Moreover, companies with R&D are more productivity-oriented than companies without R&D.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the literature on innovation management by supporting the assumption that innovation results in increased productivity and expands market demand. In addition, findings highlight that R&D is essential for boosting firms’ productivity.

Practical implications

Managers should consider an appropriate combination of the innovation portfolio and R&D investments to make progress and increase performance in the company. In addition, policymakers should consider that investments to promote the development of R&D activities in manufacturing companies will likely lead to médium- or long-term returns.

Social implications

The correct use of indicators to measure these relationships could help the policymaker to design and measure policy instruments more efficiently.

Originality/value

These results provide a deeper understanding of how the effects of innovations implemented by manufacturing firms, especially service and process innovation, improve their performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Members of the corporate C-suite are powerful and widely perceived communicators. Communication management research examines the role of the corporate communication function in facilitating the positioning of chief executive officers (CEO). The present study contributes to this research by extending the focus to another executive board member, the chief financial officer (CFO) and the domain of financial communication. It examines the role of the CFO in addressing financial audiences – compared to that of the CEO. It also analyzes the roles of the public relations (PR) and investor relations (IR) departments in facilitating CFO positioning.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on an interview study of eight IR and PR professionals and a survey of 106 heads of investor relations and financial communication experts from listed companies in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Findings

Findings show that CFOs are similarly visible in capital markets as CEOs. Their communicator roles differ according to task responsibilities, with CEOs focusing on strategy and CFOs conveying financial performance. While CEOs are more involved in press relations, CFOs focus on investor dialog. CFOs are less proactively positioned than CEOs. Also, CFOs are mostly positioned in the context of mandatory disclosure. PR departments influence CEO positioning more, while IR departments commonly report to the CFO. Communicator roles are rarely formally defined and are subject to the executives’ preferences, which encumbers strategic communication management.

Research limitations/implications

This study is based on cross-sectional survey data, which are subject to self-selection. The examined markets represent advanced capital markets with strict disclosure requirements. Findings indicate a lack of formalization in CFO positioning in the context of financial communication. This study also highlights the need to examine C-suite positioning beyond the CEO and the PR department.

Originality/value

This study contributes to research on C-suite communication by extending the perspective beyond the CEO and public relations. It also contributes to communication management research by highlighting how resource allocation and establishing rules shape the management practices applied to C-suite positioning. Finally, it contributes to financial communication research by empirically exploring the CFO’s communicator role.

Abstract

Purpose

To examine how psychological diversity among work team members affects team interaction processes. Psychological diversity is described in terms of personality attributes (emotional stability, extraversion, conscientiousness, openness to experience, and agreeableness), need for achievement (nAch), and emotional intelligence. Team interaction processes include workload sharing, team communication, member flexibility, social cohesion, team viability.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey research was conducted that involved 1,421 oil‐drilling workers in 54 work teams. The participants were drawn from five major oil drilling companies in Nigeria. Standardized measures were used to collect data on each of the variables examined.

Findings

It was found that each of the measures of team interaction processes is predicted by different psychological diversity measures. However, emotional stability, extraversion, agreeableness and emotional intelligence are significant in predicting overall team interaction processes.

Research limitations/implications

The psychological diversity measures examined are not exhaustive. It is also not clear the extent to which the findings can be generalized to other work settings that are different from oil‐drilling companies.

Practical implications

Human resources management in organizations that work in teams needs to include in their selection programs, psychological measures for identifying applicants who possess requisite psychological features for team work.

Originality/value

Study of the efficacy of psychological variables in enhancing work teams in oil drilling firms in Nigeria.

Abstract

Purpose: This study contributes to understanding how consumers perform new rituals of love and gather in pilgrimage sites.

Methodology/Approach: Five years of engagement with 21 consumers involving prolonged observations and unstructured in-depth interviews provided the empirical evidence for this chapter.

Findings: Consumers’ love rituals are better explained by considering not only consumers’ actions and performances but also their physical environment. The authors found that love rituals are rites of passage following three sequences of a script. By using the religious connotation of pilgrimage, the authors highlight the importance of the location of rituals, as well as material objects. Providing contrasting perspectives, the authors also show that rituals follow substantial variations and display the instability and ambiguity of its symbolic meanings.

Originality/Value: By doing so, the authors contribute to research about rituals, singularized objects, and love relationships. More importantly, this research contributes by demonstrating the need to enrich studies of consumers rituals with historical and cultural perspectives, and transdisciplinary investigations.
