Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a comprehensive analysis of conjugate heat transfer phenomena occurring within the developing region of square ducts under both isothermal and isoflux boundary conditions. The study involves a rigorous numerical investigation, using advanced computational methods to simulate the complex heat exchange interactions between solid structures and surrounding fluid flows. The results of this analysis provide valuable insights into the heat transfer characteristics of such systems and contribute to a deeper understanding of fluid–thermal interactions in duct flows.

Design/methodology/approach

The manuscript outlines a detailed numerical methodology, combining computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis, to accurately model the conjugate heat transfer process. This approach ensures both the thermal behaviour of the solid walls and the fluid flow dynamics are well captured.

Findings

The results presented in the manuscript reveal significant variations in heat transfer characteristics for isothermal and isoflux boundary conditions. These findings have implications for optimizing heat exchangers and enhancing thermal performance in various engineering applications.

Practical implications

The insights gained from this study have the potential to influence the design and optimization of heat exchange systems, contributing to advancements in energy efficiency and engineering practices.

Originality/value

The research introduces a novel approach to study conjugate heat transfer in square ducts, particularly focusing on the developing region. This unique perspective offers fresh insights into heat transfer mechanisms that were previously not thoroughly explored.

Abstract

Purpose

Amid rapid technological progress, the construction industry is embracing Construction 4.0, redefining work practices through emerging technologies. However, the implications of Construction 4.0 technologies to enhancing well-being are still poorly understood. Particularly, the challenge lies in selecting technologies that critically contribute to well-being enhancement. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the implications of Construction 4.0 technologies to enhancing well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

A list of Construction 4.0 technologies was identified from a national strategic plan on Construction 4.0, using Malaysia as a case study. Fourteen construction industry experts were selected to evaluate the implications of Construction 4.0 technologies on well-being using fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The expert judgment was measured using linguistic variables that were transformed into fuzzy values. Then, the collected data was analyzed using the following analyses: fuzzy TOPSIS, Pareto, normalization, sensitivity, ranking performance and correlation.

Findings

Six Construction 4.0 technologies are critical to enhancing well-being: cloud & real-time collaboration, big data & predictive analytics, Internet of Things, building information modeling, autonomous construction and augmented reality & virtualization. In addition, artificial intelligence and advanced building materials are recommended to be implemented simultaneously as a very strong correlation exists between them.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study lies in a comprehensive understanding of the implications of Construction 4.0 technologies to enhancing well-being. The findings can assist researchers, industry practitioners and policymakers in making well-informed decisions to select Construction 4.0 technologies when targeting the enhancement of the overall well-being of the local construction industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Built environments are highly vulnerable to climatic disasters such as extreme floods, droughts and storms. Inaccurate decisions in adopting emerging construction technologies can result in missed opportunities to improve the resilience of built environments. Therefore, understanding the effectiveness of emerging construction technologies in improving built environment resilience can help in making better strategic decisions at the national and organizational levels. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Construction 4.0 technologies in improving built environment resilience.

Design/methodology/approach

A list of Construction 4.0 technologies was adopted from a national strategic plan. Then, the data were collected using the fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution technique from selected built environment experts to determine the relative effectiveness of Construction 4.0 technologies in improving built environment resilience.

Findings

Six Construction 4.0 technologies are critical in improving built environment resilience (in rank order): building information modeling, autonomous construction, advanced building materials, big data and predictive analytics, internet of Things and prefabrication and modular construction. In addition, adopting Construction 4.0 technologies collectively is crucial, as moderate to strong connections exist among the technologies in improving built environment resilience.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first papers that evaluate the effectiveness of Construction 4.0 technologies in improving built environment resilience. Industry professionals, researchers and policymakers can use the study findings to make well-informed decisions on selecting Construction 4.0 technologies that improve built environment resilience to climatic disasters.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate the potency of fermented rice bran extract as anti-hypercholesterolemia product by looking at its effect on lipid profile levels and blood glucose levels in dyslipidemia model rats.

Design/methodology/approach

Rice bran was fermented using Rhizopus oligosporus-contained tempeh mold extracted using distilled water. Twenty-four Sprague Dawley rats were divided into a control group and hypercholesterolemia groups. Hypercholesterolemia, also known as dyslipidemia, was induced with fructose-supplemented high-fat diet. Rats induced with dyslipidemia received three different fermented rice bran extract doses, 0 (negative) 1102.5 mg/kgBW/day (FRBE 1) and 2205 mg/kgBW/day (FRBE 2). Blood was collected before and after four weeks of treatment for lipid profile and blood glucose analysis.

Findings

FRBE 2 had significantly lower total cholesterol (101.6 ± 3.3 vs 187.6 ± 3.7 mg/dL), triglyceride (83.3 ± 2.8 vs 130.7 ± 3.4 mg/dL) and LDL level (27.9 ± 1.7 vs 76.7 ± 1.5 mg/dL) but higher HDL level (64.1 ± 3.0 vs 25.5 ± 1.2 mg/dL) compared to the negative group (p < 0.001). Provision of fermented rice bran showed dose-response relationship in all blood lipid markers.

Originality/value

This study was the first to investigate the effectivity of Rhizopus sp.-fermented rice bran extract to improve glucose and lipid profile.

Abstract

Purpose

Currently, more renewable energy resources with advanced technology levels are incorporated in the electric power networks. Under this circumstance, the attainment of optimal economic dispatch is very much essential by the power system as the system requires more power generation cost and also has a great demand for electrical energy. Therefore, one of the primary difficulties in the power system is lowering the cost of power generation, which includes both economic and environmental costs. This study/paper aims to introduce a meta-heuristic algorithm, which offers an solution to the combined economic and emission dispatch (CEED).

Design/methodology/approach

A novel algorithm termed Levy-based glowworm swarm optimization (LGSO) is proposed in this work, and it provides an excellent solution to the combined economic and emission dispatch (CEED) difficulties by specifying the generation of the optimal renewable energy systems (RES). Moreover, in hybrid renewable energy systems, the proposed scheme is extended by connecting the wind turbine because the thermal power plant could not control the aforementioned costs. In terms of economic cost, emission cost and transmission loss, the suggested CEED model outperforms other conventional schemes genetic algorithm, Grey wolf optimization, whale optimization algorithm (WOA), dragonfly algorithm (DA) and glowworm swarm optimization (GSO) and demonstrates its efficiency.

Findings

According to the results, the suggested model for Iteration 20 was outperformed GSO, DA and WOA by 23.46%, 97.33% and 93.33%, respectively. For Iteration 40, the proposed LGSO was 60%, 99.73% and 97.06% better than GSO, DA and WOA methods, respectively. The proposed model for Iteration 60 was 71.50% better than GSO, 96.56% better than DA and 95.25% better than WOA. As a result, the proposed LGSO was shown to be superior to other existing techniques with respect to the least cost and loss.

Originality/value

This research introduces the latest optimization algorithm known as LGSO to provide an excellent solution to the CEED difficulties by specifying the generation of the optimal RES. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first work that utilizes LGSO-based optimization for providing an excellent solution to the CEED difficulties by specifying the generation of the optimal RES.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to estimate the determinants of the intensity of use of financial inclusion by households in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

Due to the reality of a household using one or more financial products or services, this study uses the generalised Poisson model applied to GLSS6 and GLSS7 data collected in 2012/2013 and 2016/2017 respectively, to estimate the determinants of the intensity of use of financial inclusion. To deepen the analysis, a multinomial probit model is also applied.

Findings

Results show that infrastructural variables such as roads, public transport and banks stimulate the intensity of financial inclusion. In addition, agricultural development characteristics such as markets and cooperatives are essential for the intensity of inclusion.

Research limitations/implications

There is a need to incorporate how many services or depth of services that people use as part of the conceptualisation of financial inclusion, as this can provide more policy-relevant evidence to enhance priority setting in financial inclusion policies. Also, micro-level financial inclusion studies in agrarian economies should consider exploring agricultural development and infrastructure variables in the modelling framework. As lead to further studies, count models of financial inclusion should consider exploring cross-country analysis, the use of panel data, or other methodological approaches to provide more robust evidence.

Originality/value

Previous studies have not modelled financial inclusion based on a count model as a means of measuring intensity though conceptualisations highlight the fact that people use varied financial products or services. Following from this angle, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study provides the first attempt at analysing the underlying determinants of the number of financial products or services used by households.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of multiple functions of the coriander plant, including its nutritional and nutraceutical benefits, with special reference to linalool.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors undertake a literature review of the coriander plant's history, chemical composition of coriander parts and its oil, and their nutraceutical potential. Various phytopharmacological appraisals have been discussed at length to investigate their important potential.

Findings

Coriander is an annual, herbaceous plant which originated from the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions and known as medicinal plants. Coriander contains an essential oil (0.03‐2.6%). The different parts of this plant contain monoterpenes, limpnene, α‐pinene, γ‐terpinene, p‐cymene, citronellol, borneol, camphor, coriandrin, geraniol, dihydrocoriandrin, coriandronsA‐E, flavonoids and essential oils. It is used as a stomachic, spasmolytic and carminative which have a greater bioactive property. Various parts of this plant, such as seeds, leaves, flower and fruit, possess antioxidant activity, diuretic, anti‐convulsant anti‐diabetic activity, sedative hypnotic activity, anti‐mutagenic, anti‐microbial activity, anthelmintic activity. The physical properties, chemical composition and bioactivity affect the coriander's commercial value.

Research limitations/implications

Currently available information on coriander seeds and leaves is insufficient. These observations have led to continuing research aimed at identifying specific bioactive components in foods, such as antioxidants, which may be responsible for improving and maintaining health. Antioxidants are present in foods as vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and polyphenols. Coriander is also rich in such compounds. Research supports that some of these foods, as part of an overall healthful diet, have the potential to delay the onset of many age‐related diseases, so there is urgent need to explore the role of these compounds.

Originality/value

This review is unique in its comprehensive nature and reflects the importance of coriander as a medicinal food.

Abstract

Purpose

Empirical research on the relationship between financial inclusion and economic growth has neglected the influence of religion or secularism. This study aims to investigate the effect of financial inclusion on economic growth in religious and secular countries.

Design/methodology/approach

The financial inclusion indicators are the number of automated teller machines (ATMs)per 100,000 adults and the number of bank branches per 100,000 adults. These two indicators are the accessibility dimension of financial inclusion based on physical points of service. The two-stage least square (2SLS) regression method was used to analyze the effect of financial inclusion on real gross domestic product (GDP) per capita growth and real GDP growth in religious and secular countries.

Findings

Bank branch contraction significantly increases economic growth in secular countries. Bank branch expansion combined with greater internet usage increases economic growth in secular countries while high ATM supply combined with greater internet usage decreases economic growth in secular countries. This study also finds that bank branch expansion, in the midst of a widening poverty gap, significantly increases economic growth in religious countries, implying that financial inclusion through bank branch expansion is effective in promoting economic growth in poor religious countries. It was also found that internet usage is a strong determinant of economic growth in secular countries.

Originality/value

Few studies in the literature examined the effect of financial inclusion on economic growth. But the literature has not examined how financial inclusion affects economic growth in religious and secular countries.

Purpose: Fintech, as part of technological innovation, has evolved from a small industry trend to the main force transforming the financial environment over the past 10 years. In the beginning, it was associated with small start-ups and garage companies focused on bringing new original products and services to the market to improve people’s lives. The definition of financial innovation is not as simple as it might seem because it aims at changes in the whole financial sector. Therefore, it includes online and mobile banking, digital payments, cryptocurrency and blockchain, insurtech, neobanks, wealthtech, and artificial intelligence. The aim of this article is to present the role of financial innovation in the processes of change in the global economy for sustainable development.

Methodology: To underline the importance of ongoing changes, trends in fintech subsectors are described using statistical tools. The statistical analysis will be carried out both for time series and for geographical areas, showing the regions with the strongest and weakest positions in the implementation of fintech.

Implications: The classification of financial technologies, with their complicated linkages and relations with other industries, will be a background of the research. In addition, an attempt will be made to diagnose the future of technological processes in the financial sector, with potential consequences for the sustainable development of countries.

Abstract

Purpose

Real estate valuation studies gained popularity with the availability of large-scale property transaction data in the latter part of the twentieth century. Hedonic price modeling (HPM) was the most popular method in the initial years until it was taken over by advanced modeling methods in the twenty-first century. Even though there exist a few literature reviews on this topic, no comprehensive bibliometric analysis is conducted in this area. In view of gaining a better understanding of the dynamics of property valuation studies, this paper aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive search in the Scopus database, followed by detailed screening resulted in 1,400 articles. The identified research articles spanning over five decades (1964–2019) are analyzed using the open-source R package “bibliometrix.”

Findings

The study found the USA to be the most productive country in various aspects, such as number of publications, number of authors and publication hotspots. The findings also demonstrate assessments on the publication trends, journals, citations, keywords, co-citation and collaboration networks. It was observed that there exists an upsurge in the number of publications after the year 2000 owing to improved data availability and better modeling techniques.

Research limitations/implications

This study is significant in understanding the major research areas and modeling techniques used in property valuation. Future studies can incorporate multiple database sources and include more articles.

Originality/value

The current study is one of the first bibliometric studies on property valuation. Previous studies have not explored the possibilities of geographic information system in bibliometric research. Spatial mapping and analysis of publications provide a geographical perspective of valuation research.
