Abstract

Purpose

Previously, the effect of pore-forming agents on the properties of pore size and morphology was studied. In this paper, we determine the optimal combination of parameters by tensile strength and perform tribological tests with optimal combination of parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, porous polyimide (PI) materials were fabricated using vacuum hot molding technology. The orthogonal experiment was designed to test the mechanical properties of porous PI materials with the process parameters and the content of pore-forming agent as the changing factors. The porous PI oil-bearing materials were obtained by vacuum immersion, and tribological test were carried out.

Findings

The results showed that porous PI oil-bearing materials are suitable for low-speed and low-load conditions. The actual value of the friction coefficient basically match with the theoretical value of the regression analysis, and the errors of the friction coefficient are within 10% and 3%, respectively, which proves that the method used in the study is feasible for the friction coefficient prediction.

Originality/value

In this paper, we have produced a new porous oil-bearing material with good tribological properties. This study can effectively predict the friction coefficient of PI porous material.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to improve the dispersion of nanoserpentine modified with OA, KH550 and KH550/oleic acid in lubricating oil. The main aims are to analyze the influence of the dispersion and stability of nanoserpentine modified by different modifiers on the friction properties of lubricating oil.

Design/methodology/approach

The nanoserpentine particles obtained by ball-milling were modified by silane coupling agent KH550, OA and KH550/OA, respectively. The dispersity and stability of nanoserpentine in base lubricating oil were characterized by the absorbance value method, centrifuge precipitation rate method and static observation method. The MMU-5G screen display friction and wear tester was used to evaluate the tribological properties of C45E4/C45E4 friction pairs in corresponding lubricating oils. The surface morphology of the friction pairs was observed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy.

Findings

The results showed that the dispersity and stability of nanoserpentine particles in lubricating oil were best modified by OA, followed by the KH550/OA and finally, the KH550. Nanoserpentine particles modified with oleic acid showed optimum tribological properties as lubricant additives.

Originality/value

This study can improve the dispersion stability of nanoserpentine particles in lubricating oil, increasing the antiwear and antifriction performance of lubricating oil, which has great significance in economic and military aspects.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the tribological properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites modified by nano-serpentine and nano-lanthanum oxide in a seawater environment.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, seven PTFE composites were prepared by unified design method and vacuum thermoforming method, and their hardness, water absorption and tribological properties were measured under seawater environment. The modification effects and thermal stability of the materials were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. This paper analyzed the wear mechanism of PTFE composites by scanning electron microscopy and energy spectroscopy.

Findings

The results showed that the hardness of the PTFE composites were all improved, but the water absorption was increased with the increase of additives. The modification of nano-serpentine was successful and the thermal stability of PTFE composites was better. The lowest coefficient and minimum wear rate are 0.0267 and 8.67 × 10−5 · mm3 · (N · m)−1 respectively, which is 34.9% and 76% less than the pure PTFE.

Originality/value

The analysis showed that the wear mechanism of PTFE composites was abrasive wear and a small amount of adhesive wear, and when the additive content was appropriate, it easily formed a transfer film on the surface mating parts.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of Ti3SiC2 on the high-temperature tribological behaviors of NiCr coating, which was beneficial to improve the friction-wear performance of hot work mold.

Design/methodology/approach

NiCr-Ti3SiC2 coatings were prepared on H13 steel substrate by laser cladding. The microstructure, phases and hardness of obtained coatings were analyzed using a super-depth of field microscope, X-ray diffraction and microhardness tester, respectively, and the tribological performance of obtained coatings at 500°C was investigated using a high-temperature tester.

Findings

The results show the NiCr-Ti3SiC2 coatings are comprised of γ-Ni solid, solution, TixNiy, TiC and Ti3SiC2 phases, and the coating hardness is increased with the increase of Ti3SiC2 mass fraction, which is contributed to the fine-grain and dispersion strengthening effect by the addition of Ti3SiC2. The NiCr-Ti3SiC2 coatings present excellent friction reduction and wear resistance by the synergetic action of Ti3SiC2 lubricant and hard phase, and the wear mechanism is predominated by abrasive wear and oxidation wear.

Originality/value

Ti3SiC2 phase was used to reinforce the tribological performance of H13 steel at high temperature, and the roles of friction reduction and wear resistance were discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

To address the issue of large visual measurement errors caused by insufficient information collected by monocular vision when performing six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) position measurements on metal castings, which hinders the robot’s ability to visually guide grasping, this paper aims to propose a 6DOF position measurement method that integrates monocular vision with deep neural networks.

Design/methodology/approach

This method enhances the robot’s ability to visually grasp small-sample industrial objects with high accuracy. By establishing a mapping relationship between the two-dimensional (2D) position of the object’s image and its three-dimensional (3D) position in space, the proposed approach achieves 6DOF position measurement of the target workpiece using monocular vision. An image enhancement algorithm based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) is introduced to improve robustness in industrial environments by addressing the challenge of acquiring image data for small-sample objects. Additionally, the method combines single-phase object detection using deep neural networks with 2D-3D affine transformation to achieve accurate 3D position measurements.

Findings

The introduction of the GAN-based image enhancement algorithm significantly mitigates the robustness issues posed by the difficulties in obtaining image data for small-sample objects in industrial settings. The integration of single-phase object detection and 2D–3D affine transformation allows for precise 3D position measurement of the workpiece. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method provides high accuracy in 6DOF position measurements for industrial objects.

Originality/value

This approach overcomes the limitations of traditional vision algorithms for 3D position measurement of industrial objects, such as high cost and poor robustness. The experimental validation confirms that the proposed method achieves excellent 6DOF position measurement accuracy for industrial objects.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the effect of aspect ratio A and aspect velocity ratio a on the bifurcation occurrence phenomena in lid-driven cavity by using finite volume method (FVM) and multigrid acceleration. This study has been performed for certain pertinent parameters; a wide range of the Reynolds number values has been adopted, and aspect ratios ranging from 0.25 to 1 and various velocity ratios from 0.25 to 0.825 have been considered in this investigation. Results show that the transition to the unsteady regime follows the classical scheme of Hopf bifurcation, giving rise to a perfectly periodic state. Flow periodicity has been verified through time history plots for the velocity component and phase-space trajectories as a function of Reynolds number. Velocity profile for special case of a square cavity (A = 1) was found to be in good agreement between current numerical results and published ones. Flow characteristics inside the cavity have been presented and discussed in terms of streamlines and vorticity contours at a fixed Reynolds number (Re = 5,000) for various aspect ratios (a = 0).

Design/methodology/approach

The numerical method is based on the FVM and multigrid acceleration.

Findings

Computations have been investigated for several Reynolds numbers and aspect ratios A (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 0.825 and 1). Besides, various velocity ratios (a = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 0.825) at fixed aspect ratios (A = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) were considered. It is observed that the transition to the unsteady regime follows the classical scheme of Hopf bifurcation, giving rise to a perfectly periodic state. Flow periodicity is verified through time history plots for velocity components and phase-space trajectories.

Originality/value

The bifurcations between steady and unsteady states are investigated.
