Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to fabricate nickel-aluminum (Ni-Al)-based self-lubricating composite coating on aluminum (Al) alloy by mechanical milling (MM).
Design/methodology/approach
A new carrier transport (CT) way was designed to solve the slippage fracture of the coating due to silver (Ag) accumulation (Ag powders were cold welded with nickel [Ni] powders by MM in advance to avoid accumulation, then Al powder and samples were added to fabricate the coating).
Findings
Microstructure analysis reveals that the solid lubricant Ag exists as particles in the composite coating via CT technique, which is different from the typical morphology (strip-type) of Ag tailored by normal methods. The unique granular form of Ag can effectively avoid the gliding fracture of the coating, thus forming an efficacious lubrication film on the worn surface, which is responsible for the excellent tribological properties of the coating.
Practical implications
Most of the papers reported that coatings synthesized by MM mainly concentrated on hard coatings, but the fabrication of self-lubricating coatings have not yet reported.
Originality/value
The uniform dispersion of solid lubricant Ag can effectively solves a fatal problem that the fracture failure of coating triggered by the Ag accumulation. This experiment provides a novel method for preparation of self-lubricating coating by MM.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the trends, patterns and the impact of cultural and home country macroeconomic influences on Chinese cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBM&A) as foreign entry strategy for the period of 1998-2011.
Design/methodology/approach
Using three regression models, namely, ordinary least squares, the random effects and fixed effects to examine the impact of home country macroeconomic and cultural factors on CBM&A outflows as an entry mode of Chinese firms. The authors check the robustness of the results using system GMM.
Findings
The findings suggest that CBM&A as a preferred mode of market entry provides a means for obtaining strategic resources to develop competitive advantages for the Chinese emerging market firms. The regression results indicate that home country macroeconomic and cultural variables, including gross domestic product (GDP), liquidity, interest rates, inflation, acquisitions in resource seeking sectors and cultural distance play an important role in explaining the trends of CBM&A outflows by the Chinese firms.
Research limitations/implications
The results imply that government support to emerging market multinational enterprises (EMEs) to acquire strategic assets and economic policies in the home country play an important role in shaping international expansion behaviour of EMEs through CBM&A. The study demonstrates that outward investments of EMEs are partly a function of the level of economic policies and government support at home. The limitation is that most of the Chinese CBM&A transactions took place in Asia/Pacific locations. Future studies appear warranted if new data become available.
Originality/value
The study demonstrates how the institutions, strategic asset seeking with government support and economic policies in the home country play important role in shaping international expansion behaviour of emerging market enterprises through CBM&A thereby contributing to the political economy literature and institutional theory. More importantly, the study shows that the level of economic policies and development such as GDP, money supply, interest rates, inflation of the home country are important for EME growth in the international market.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine how home institutions moderate the influence of internationalization, and the effect this has on the performance of stock-listed Chinese firms.
Design/methodology/approach
A sample of 118 stock-listed Chinese firms over the period 2006-2011 was considered, using the panel data method.
Findings
The results show that foreign ownership and region-specific marketization help firms reap the performance benefits of internationalization, while state ownership plays an insignificant role.
Research limitations/implications
The findings may not hold for unlisted firms, service firms or firms from other emerging economies.
Practical implications
The study suggests that Chinese managers should take advantage of home country institutions to improve the effects of internationalization on performance.
Originality/value
This research suggests that the analysis of the performance consequences of internationalization should go beyond the nexus between internationalization and performance, and also consider the home institutional factors that may facilitate or constrain the focal relationship.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine how firm resources and diversification strategy explain the performance consequences of internationalization of emerging market enterprises.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper conducts a regression analysis by using a novel panel data set comprising of 685 listed Chinese firms over the period of 2008-2011.
Findings
The results show that the relationship between internationalization and performance is inverse U-shaped. Further, marketing resources play a greater role in enhancing the performance effects of internationalization than technological resources do. Related product diversification enhances the performance effects, while unrelated product diversification does the contrary.
Research limitations/implications
The study focusses on listed firms in one country, and as a result, the findings cannot be generalized to non-listed firms and firms in other countries.
Practical implications
This paper offers guidelines for international managers to improve performance of internationalization by developing a particular type of resources and diversification strategy.
Originality/value
This paper extends the literature on the functional form of the internationalization-performance relationship, and further suggests that the analysis of the performance consequences of internationalization should go beyond the nexus between internationalization and performance, and focusses on firm-specific resources and strategies that may facilitate or constrain the performance effects of internationalization.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of outward foreign direct investment (O‐FDI) on the competitiveness of home‐country export.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of outward foreign direct investment (O‐FDI) on the competitiveness of home‐country export.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper employs a six‐year data set from Taiwanese manufacturing data for 15 industries over the period between 1991 and 2007.
Findings
The authors find that exports in Taiwan are positively associated with O‐FDI by Taiwanese firms. This finding supports the view that outward FDI complements home country exports and concurs with the majority of earlier empirical findings which focus on developed home countries. The authors also find that such effect is stronger for Taiwanese FDI in China than in other countries and in traditional sectors than in modern sectors.
Originality/value
These findings suggest that location‐and industry‐specific characteristics moderate the strength of the relationship between O‐FDI and home country exports.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine how subnational institutions within a country explain the performance consequences of open innovation (OI) in emerging market enterprises (EMEs).
Design/methodology/approach
The paper conducts a regression analysis by using a novel panel data set comprising of 438 innovative Chinese firms over the period of 2008-2011.
Findings
The authors show that although on average openness to external actors improves innovation performance this effect is pronounced for EMEs that operate in subnational regions with a higher level of intellectual property rights (IPR) enforcement and of factor market development. The findings point to the context-dependent nature of OI strategy and the complementary effect of institutional parameters in emerging markets and help to reconcile the contrasting findings regarding the effect of OI in the prior literature.
Originality/value
This paper extends the literature on OI by suggesting that the analysis of the performance consequences of OI strategy should go beyond the nexus between OI and firm performance, and instead, focus on subnational-specific institutions, such as region-specific IPR enforcement, factor market development and intermediation market development, that may facilitate or constrain the effect of OI model.

Abstract
Purpose
Helicopter fuselage vibration prediction is important to keep a safety and comfortable flight process. The helicopter vibration mechanism model is difficult to meet of demand for accurate vibration prediction. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to develop an intelligent algorithm for accurate helicopter fuselage vibration analysis.
Design/methodology/approach
In this research, a novel weighted variational mode decomposition (VMD)- extreme gradient boosting (xgboost) helicopter fuselage vibration prediction model is proposed. The vibration data is decomposed and reconstructed by the signal clustering results. The vibration response is predicted by xgboost algorithm based on the reconstructed data. The information transfer order between the controllable flight data and flight attitude are analyzed.
Findings
The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) of the proposed weighted VMD-xgboost model are decreased by 6.8%, 31.5% and 32.8% compared with xgboost model. The established weighted VMD-xgboost model has the highest prediction accuracy with the lowest mean MAPE, RMSE and MAE of 4.54%, 0.0162, and 0.0131, respectively. The attitude of horizontal tail and cycle pitch are the key factors to vibration.
Originality/value
A novel weighted VMD-xgboost intelligent prediction methods is proposed. The prediction effect of xgboost model is highly improved by using the signal-weighted reconstruction technique. In addition, the data set used is collected from actual helicopter flight process.

Abstract
Purpose
Since the beginning of the 21st century, China’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) is growing steadily and Chinese multinationals (MNCs) are playing an increasingly important role in the global economy. Thus, the number of papers focusing on China’s OFDI and Chinese MNCs has been increasing during the last years. The aim of this chapter is to carry out a review of the empirical papers dealing with Chinese MNCs published between 2002 and 2012 in high-impact international business and management journals.
Design/methodology/approach
This chapter reviews 43 empirical papers focusing on Chinese MNCs that were published in nine major scholarly journals between 2002 and 2012.
Findings
We report individual and institutional contributions, the theories and methods used, the research topics, and the main findings. We also discuss implications for future research.
Originality/value
Some previous literature reviews have dealt with research on China’s OFDI and Chinese MNCs. Nevertheless, none of the earlier reviews dealt specifically with empirical papers; neither did they provide an analysis of both individual and institutional contributions.

Abstract
Purpose
Today clothing has become the largest category in online shopping in China, and even in Asia-Pacific. The satisfaction degree of apparel online shopping can be improved by effective personalized recommendation. The purpose of this paper is to propose a personalized recommendation model and algorithm based on Kansei engineering, traditional filtering algorithm and the knowledge relating to apparel.
Design/methodology/approach
Users’ perceptual image and the design elements of apparel based on Kansei engineering are discussed to build the mapping relation between the design elements and user ratings employing verbal protocol, semantic differential and partial least squares. The implicit knowledge and emotional needs pertaining to users are accessed using analytic hierarchy process. A personalized recommendation model for apparel online shopping is established and the algorithm for the personalized recommendation process is proposed. To present the personalized recommendation model, men’s plaid shirts are taken as the example, and the recommendations of apparel for online shopping were implemented and ranked in the context of differing users’ emotional needs. A comparison between the traditional model and this model is made to verify the effectiveness.
Findings
The recommendation model is capable of analyzing data and information effectively, and providing fast, personalized apparel recommendation services in accordance with users’ emotional needs. The experimental results suggest that the model is effective.
Originality/value
Similar researches of recommendation mainly focus on the field of computer science, the basic idea of which is using users’ history accessing records or the preferences of other similar users for determination of users’ preferences. Since the attributes of apparel products are not factored in the approach referred above, the issue of personalized recommendation cannot be solved in a really effective way. Combining Kansei engineering and recommendation algorithm, a framework for apparel product recommendation is presented and it is a new way for improvement of recommendations for apparel products on shopping sites.

Abstract
Purpose
Although technological diversification is often understood as an explorative activity, the authors argue that it can also be explained as exploitation. The purpose of this paper is to examine how exploitative technological diversification (ETD) affects firm performance and what factors may moderate this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
The sample consists of 1,569 Chinese listed firms with 7,555 observations from 2003 to 2014. Patent data were collected from the State Intellectual Property Office, while financial information was collected from the China Stock Market and Accounting Research database. The system generalised method of moments model was used for testing the hypotheses.
Findings
The empirical findings indicate that the relationship between ETD and firm performance is inversely U-shaped. Moreover, this relationship is negatively moderated by environmental munificence, which refers to the availability of resources in the environment where the firm operates, and positively moderated by environmental dynamism, which refers to the extent of volatility and unpredictable change in firms’ external environments.
Originality/value
Overlooking ETD limits applications of diversification logic and the precision of their predictions. This paper tries to fill this gap by empirically testing the relationship between ETD and financial performance.
