Abstract

Purpose

A fixture is a special tool used to accurately and stably locate the workpiece during machining process. Proper fixture design improves the quality and production of parts and also facilitates the interchangeability of parts, which is prevalent in much of modern manufacturing. The purpose of this paper is to combine the rule‐based reasoning (RBR) and case‐based reasoning (CBR) method for machining fixture design in a virtual reality (VR) based integrated system.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, an approach combining the RBR and fuzzy comprehensive judgment method is proposed for reasoning suitable locating features and clamping features. Based on the reasoning results, a CBR method for machining fixture design is then presented.

Findings

The paper finds that the proposed system is an efficient tool for machining fixture design.

Practical implications

The proposed system enables the designers to perform fixture design with automated fixture locating method reasoning and make a new fixturing solution quickly by referencing previous design cases.

Originality/value

A VR application for machining fixture design is presented.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel adaptive Kalman filter (APRKF) designed to accommodate the operational environment of maglev pipeline trains, enhancing positioning accuracy by mitigating the impact of noise and sensor errors.

Design/methodology/approach

This approach is built upon the Kalman filtering algorithm, using a limited-memory weighted method to derive adaptive factors, while establishing judgment thresholds to constrain the range of their variation.

Findings

A comparative analysis with the traditional Kalman filter and the Sage-Husa adaptive filter reveals that APRKF offers superior speed estimation performance while effectively mitigating error accumulation caused by speed integration. The results indicate that APRKF excels in both speed and position estimation, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving estimation accuracy.

Originality/value

This study proposes an innovative method for the velocity and position estimation system of maglev tube-track trains.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of information, both public macro news and private information, on exchange rate volatility in an integrated framework.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors apply real-time data of macro announcements and high-frequency trading data (German Deutsche Mark to US dollar, DEM/USD, from 1 May to 31August 1996) to GARCH models and examine various model specifications.

Findings

Data analysis demonstrates real-time macro news and market makers’ private information both have a significant impact on exchange rate volatility, but there is no interaction between macro and micro information in the information transmission process.

Originality/value

This study contributes to empirical hybrid studies of examining exchange rates volatility, which is in line with literature that combine both macro and micro fundamentals in examining exchange rates variation. Particularly, a key element of this study is to use a microstructure fundamental variable, namely, order flow, to capture private information in an exchange rate volatility study.

Abstract

Examines the fifteenth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.
