Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is twofold. First, this study characterises the current state of the bio-packaging market's development. Second, it identifies key factors influencing and possible scenarios of the bio-packaging market transition to increase the market share of compostable packaging.

Design/methodology/approach

The results of 29 in-depth interviews (IDIs) with representatives of the key groups of bio-packaging supply chains' (SCs') stakeholders were the input for the consideration of the research problem.

Findings

The main economic, legal, social and technological enablers and barriers to the bio-packaging regime transition are recognised, and their impact at the market level is explained. The authors recognised the hybrid transition scenario towards an increase in the market share of compostable packaging related to the three traditional pathways of transformation, reconfiguration and technological substitution.

Originality/value

This study contributes to a better understanding of the socio-technical system theory by examining interdependencies between landscape (external environment), market regime (bio-packaging market) and niche innovations (compostable packaging) as well as system transition pathways. The findings and conclusions on bio-packaging market developments can be important lessons learnt to be applied in different countries due to the same current development stage of the compostable packaging lifecycle worldwide.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable management practices are crucial environmental initiatives implemented by manufacturing organisations to mitigate growing social and ecological problems and progress operational and economic successes. The theory of constraints highlights the essence of adopting sustainability practices, including green management, lean management, top management commitment and reverse logistics, to address production constraints and achieve manufacturing performance. However, more empirical evidence is required to determine whether sustainability practices affect manufacturing performance metrics in economies like Ghana. This research establishes whether adopting sustainable management practices impacts manufacturers’ operational and sustainable performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This deductive research adopts an explanatory research design. Survey data was administered to 285 managers in 5,329 manufacturing businesses in Ghana. The data was processed and analysed with SmartPLS4.1 and structural equation modelling.

Findings

Green management and top management commitment positively predict the performance aspects of manufacturing organisations in Ghana. Also, reverse logistics and lean management practices improve firms’ operational, social and environmental performance, except for economic performance. It is concluded that manufacturing businesses that embrace sustainable management practices can improve their performance.

Research limitations/implications

Although the study’s objectives were primarily achieved, it was geographically restricted to Ghana, a developing country. Also, it was carried out within the boundaries of explanatory design and structural equation modelling.

Practical implications

It provides comprehensive information to assist owner-managers in prioritising heavy investments in appropriate sustainable management practices. It will also encourage them to develop a sustainability culture within their firms and supply chains to fast-track and sustain the adopted practices. These measures will enable manufacturing organisations to effectively handle growing sustainability problems to leverage their sustainable and operational performance.

Originality/value

This study analyses the interplay between sustainable management practices and manufacturing performance dimensions in a developing economy. Hence, the outcomes would serve as valuable guidelines for selecting relevant practices to foster sustainable production and meet performance objectives.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to prepare alkyd protective paint by using modified alkyd with 3,6-dichloro benzo[b]thiophene-2-carbonyl glutamic acid (DCBTGA) as a source of dicarboxylic acid and evaluating their anticorrosive properties compared with those of unmodified alkyd coatings for steel protection.

Design/methodology/approach

Short, medium and long oil alkyds, which represented as (0, 10, 20 and 30% excess-OH) according to the resin constants (Patton, 1962), were prepared through a condensation polymerization reaction via a solvent process in a one-step reaction. The modification of alkyd was carried out by using DCBTGA as a source of dicarboxylic acid. The prepared modified alkyd was confirmed by IR and NMR spectral analysis. The physicochemical, mechanical and anticorrosion performance properties of the considered modified coating formulations against unmodified blank coating were studied to confirm their application efficiency.

Findings

The best results in terms of physicochemical, mechanical and anticorrosion performance properties were found according to the following of this order activity: 30 replacements of the modifier (DCBTGA) for each hydroxyl continent were 30% Ex-OH > 20% Ex-OH > 10% Ex-OH > 0% Ex-OH, compared with that formulation containing unmodified alkyd, especially with increasing the modifier percent.

Originality/value

The prepared DCBTGA-modified resins can be used for different applications based on the type of alkyd and application.

This chapter examines the Asia-Pacific region's circular economy (CE) actions concerning climate change policies.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter examines the Asia-Pacific region's circular economy (CE) actions concerning climate change policies.

Methodology

A systematic narrative synthesis of subsequent systematic literature review (SLR) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines is adopted, and this study reviews 38 sample studies on CE practices and climate change policies in conducting the survey.

Findings

The findings suggest a policy convergence in the CE and climate change. This study identified several gaps in current policies regarding CE integration, such as a lack of comprehensive CE legislation, insufficient incentives for circular practices, limited focus on waste reduction and resource efficiency, need for enhanced public awareness and education, inadequate infrastructure for recycling and waste management and weak coordination among stakeholders. Challenges and barriers were identified regarding economic, social, political and technological aspects.

Implications

This chapter provided policy recommendations on integrative approaches, regional cooperation and partnerships and implementing financial and regulatory incentive practices. New technologies and methods open the door to expanding the goal of the CE.

Originality

This study presents the findings of the current status of CE actions regarding climate change policies for the Asia-Pacific countries, provides proactive management recommendations and implications for future practices and identifies the need to collaborate for the region's sustainable development.

Abstract

Purpose

Our research aims to understand adolescents’ perceptions of alternative food such as insects in Western countries. Objectives are to identify (1) a “green gap” between their favorable attitudes toward adopting a sustainable diet and their real-life behaviors, (2) the perceived benefits and costs of adopting sustainable habits and (3) how the potential green gap can be reduced by the psychological factors grouped under the acronym SHIFT proposed by White et al. (2019): Social influence, Habit formation, Individual self, Feelings and cognition and Tangibility.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 31 French teenagers (12–18 years old). Manual thematic content analysis was compared with two types of lexicometric analysis (IRaMuTeQ and LIWC).

Findings

The conflict between adolescents’ personal desires and environmental goals reflects a green gap. The analysis of the benefits and costs expressed by adolescents shows the relevance of the levers of the SHIFT framework to encourage behavior change. In particular, the social dimension is valued for entomophagy.

Research limitations/implications

This research explores the acceptance of one type of alternative protein (insect-based foods) by French teenagers.

Practical implications

The SHIFT framework highlights the most effective psychological drivers in adolescents for businesses and governments to encourage the adolescent consumption of alternative proteins.

Social implications

This research helps to demonstrate the role of marketing in encouraging sustainable eating habits. It is fully in line with the major climate-related marketing challenges.

Originality/value

Applying White et al.'s (2019) SHIFT analysis framework to adolescents and entomophagy, this work proposes avenues for action and innovation to reduce the green gap between attitudes and behaviors in the context of sustainable food consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

A fully coupled multi-physics model is established to simulate thermal, hydraulic, chemical and mechanical (THCM) behaviors of the sediments with the hydrate dissociation.

Design/methodology/approach

Linear hydrate-soil constitutive model; Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion; Thermal, hydraulic and chemical (THC) model.

Findings

(1) The linear internal friction angle model proposed in this study can more reasonably simulate the effect of hydrate saturation on the mechanical properties of sediment than the fixed internal friction angle model. (2) The established THCM model can not only accurately simulate temperature variations and gas production efficiency but also reasonably simulate effective stress reduction and volumetric contraction of sediment during the process of hydrate dissociation. (3) The dissociation of hydrate not only decreases the instability coefficient of sediment but also increases the moving distance and equivalent plastic strain of the sediment.

Research limitations/implications

The hydrate sediment with large deformations should be considered in the future.

Practical implications

The submarine landslide will be investigated in the future.

Originality/value

(1) A linear hydrate-soil constitutive model based on the Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion is proposed, which defines the internal friction angle, the elastic modulus and the cohesion as a linear function of hydrate saturation. (2) A fully coupled multi-physics THCM model is established to simulate thermal, hydraulic, chemical and mechanical behaviors of hydrate-bearing sediment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore a rapid, less expensive, clean and environmentally friendly approach to the synthesis of disperse dyes based on 4-substituted benzenesulfonamide derivatives and evaluate their uses as colorants for dying and printing on polyester fabric.

Design/methodology/approach

The disperse dyes were created by dissolving solution of the diazonium salt of a 4-substituted benzenesulfonamide derivative 1 reaction with N’-(2-bromobenzylidene)-2-cyanoacetohydrazide in 25 mL of ethanol was added to the diazonium salt. The reaction mixture was then stirred in an ice bath for 2 h. Thus, developing less hazardous synthetic methods for organic reactions is one of the objectives in current research. The chemical structure of the produced dye was studied using elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic analytical methods. Quantum chemical calculations were performed using the time-dependent density function theory (TD-DFT)-B3LYP method and a 6-311G(d) basis set.

Findings

By varying the dyeing parameters, such as pH (2–8), shade (2–6%), duration (10–30 min) and temperature (100–130 °C), a comparative examination of various colorimetric and color strength (K/S) properties of polyester fabric dye using two new dispersion dyes was carried out. Higher K/S ratios were attained by polyester fabrics treated with dispersed dyes after longer dyeing times) and higher temperatures. The resulting hues were reddish-brown, yellowish-brown, beige and dark brown. According to TD-DFT calculation, dye 2 exhibits more energy changes than dye 3, indicating strong binding interactions. However, because of its higher hardness and electronegativity, dye 3 is more stable. In contrast to dye 3, dye 2 exhibits increased reactivity due to its greater softness and lesser hardness. These variations draw attention to the unique qualities of the two colors. It was also noticed that dye 2 is more efficient than dye 3 in the printing ink characterization according to their results based on lightfastness, washing, alkali respiration and crock fastness.

Originality/value

The produced disperse dyes (2 and 3) have the potential to be promising colorants in a variety of applications, such as coloring and printing. Synthetic dyes are often a great choice for printing and dyeing polyester textiles. They also provide a workable way to provide polyester textiles with a range of hues.

Abstract

Research methodology

Case information was mainly acquired through interviews with Richard Gammans, chief operating officer. Dr Gammans was a visiting professor at Fayetteville State University for a year, and two of the case authors developed personal friendships with Richard. Interviews were conducted over a two-year period as the accelerator got started. In addition, one author conducted a team-building session with the management team and one of the bio-startup researchers. An interview was also conducted with Clayton Duncan, chief executive officer, to gain his agreement with developing the case.

The Accele website included a write-up on each of the pharmaceutical startup companies. The write-up included a company summary, description of the science (disease and cure), the size of the market, results from testing, regulatory considerations and intellectual property. A literature review was conducted as the basis for the information on the pharmaceutical industry.

Case overview/synopsis

This case is about a biopharmaceutical accelerator founded in 2011 by two senior executives with experience in both large pharmaceutical companies and running biotech startup companies. The founders were successful in raising capital to start their first venture capital fund which they used to invest in four biotech startups. All four startups were working in very different disease areas. For example, one developed a drug to help with hearing loss that the department of defense was funding. Another of the startups discovered drug candidates that attack antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Biopharmaceutical accelerators were relatively new. They differed from business incubators because they invest in the startups and provide operational support, but the degree of support provided varies across accelerators. The Accele BioPharma accelerator operated in virtual, network type of organization, and Accele BioPharma provided primary strategic and operational management for the startups. The challenge in this case is to identify how the leaders managed the virtual network, and what additional resources were needed so that the management team could expand their ability to assist startups to get drugs approved by the food and drug administration.

Abstract

Purpose

The transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) is a complex process influenced by the interplay of technical, social and economic factors. This study aims to identify the socio-technical factors shaping the transition from ICE vehicles to EVs and to propose plausible transition pathways within the Indonesian context.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted an expert workshop method to gather data and co-develop the multi-level perspective (MLP) transition tool with workshop participants. The participants were carefully selected to represent diverse stakeholders, including government and industry representatives. They provided non-commercial data and insights, enriching the discussions, and ensuring a balanced and inclusive outcome.

Findings

The findings highlight the importance of understanding the multidimensional and multi-actor dynamics involved in this transition. The adoption of EVs in Indonesia is significantly influenced by socio-technical challenges, including existing policies, institutional frameworks, technological infrastructure and societal constraints. Addressing these challenges is crucial for ensuring a successful transition.

Practical implications

This study offers actionable recommendations for policymakers, businesses and government agencies responsible for strategic economic development. These recommendations serve as a foundation to support future growth in the EV market and inform decisions aimed at fostering a greener road transportation ecosystem.

Originality/value

This study enhances a holistic understanding of the complex socio-technical dynamics at play in the EV transition. It also advances innovation studies by addressing transitions within systems dominated by stable and robust ICE regimes. The MLP tools developed through this study serve as valuable instruments for articulating the role of various initiatives in driving transformative change.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a way to inhibit fungal attacks on paper manuscripts, as fungi are a major deterioration factor that causes aesthetic appearance and fragility degradation using fungal inhibitors including silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs).

Design/methodology/approach

In the present study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) doped with AgNPs (TiO2NPs@AgNPs) were produced and combined with cellulose acetate solution before membrane production. Thus, two distinct cellulose acetate (CA) membranes were created: AgNPs-loaded CA membranes (CAAg) and TiO2NPs@AgNPs-loaded CA membranes (CATAg). The fabricated membrane was applied to paper samples using cotton fibers containing ink or free of ink.

Findings

The findings revealed that these nanoparticles (AgNPs and TiO2NPs@AgNPs) have a distinct shape, small size and high stability. Furthermore, once loaded onto the CA membrane, such nanoparticles might suppress fungal assault on the surface of paper samples. According to the analysis and the acquired results, the CAAg membrane was the best material to use without affecting the paper’s properties.

Originality/value

This paper provides a novel approach for inhibiting the fungal attacks on paper manuscripts without affecting the paper properties by using membranes from cellulose acetate loaded onto nanoparticles as inhibitors.
