Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine investors’ intention and behavior concerning ex ante information acquirement and ex post claims from the micro-level perspective with the deepening of the initial public offering (IPO) reform of China.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors made surveys and collected 932 valid questionnaires from investors in China. The authors also conducted interviews with sophisticated investors, investment bankers and government regulators to obtain first-hand information. Based on the survey results, the authors make the empirical analysis.
Findings
Investors’ attention to the first-hand information of the IPO prospectuses is inadequate. Individuals rely more on second-hand information, while institutions conduct more surveys. The higher the institutional practitioners’ degree of education, the more surveys they make. Only 1/3 investors intend to seek judicial remedy when getting fraud information due to high litigation costs and proof collecting difficulties. The investors who read more about prospectuses in advance are more likely to seek judicial protection afterwards. Compared with investors who know less about government administrative protection measures, those who know more have a low probability to choose “not to seek judicial protection.”
Originality/value
The authors enrich the research studies of IPO information acquisition and investor protection by conducting surveys to get first-hand data. Previous literature mostly makes empirical tests by using proxy variables.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate Chinese stock market reaction to the announcements of dividend reductions and omissions.
Design/methodology/approach
The data sets cover the period from 1990 to 2009. A rolling portfolio approach is performed and the Fama–French three-factor model is used to calculate the post-announcement long-term abnormal returns. The matching method and the sub-sample tests are used to examine the robustness.
Findings
After controlling for firm size, the unexpected earnings and government ownership, no evidence of the dividend announcement drift is found. The results also show that the government ownership and the large trading play a role in explaining the post-announcement abnormal returns.
Originality/value
This is the first study concerning the Chinese market that examines the Chinese stock market reaction to dividend cut and omission using a long-time period of data.

Abstract
Purpose
A study on the mechanical characteristics of cementitious mortar reinforced with basalt fibres at ambient and elevated temperatures was carried out. To investigate their effect, chopped basalt fibres with varying percentages were added to the cement mortar.
Design/methodology/approach
All the specimens were heated using a muffle furnace. Flexural strength and Compressive strength tests were performed, while monitoring the moisture loss to evaluate the performance of basalt fibre reinforced cementitious mortars at elevated temperatures.
Findings
From the study, it is clear that basalt fibres can be used to reinforce mortar as the fibres remain unaffected up to 500 °C. Minimal increases in flexural strengths and compressive strengths were measured with the addition of basalt fibres at both ambient and elevated temperatures. SEM pictures revealed fibre matrix interaction/degradation at different temperatures.
Originality/value
The current study shows the potential of basalt fibre addition in mortar as a reinforcement mechanism at elevated temperatures and provides experimental quantifiable mechanical performances of different fibre percentage addition.

Abstract
Purpose
Advanced heavy water reactor (AHWR) is a pressure tube type of heavy water reactor. It eliminates high-pressure heavy water coolant resulting in a reduction of heavy water leakage losses and eliminating heavy water recovery system. It recovers the heat generated in the moderator for feed water heating. However, it requires a satisfactory technological response to develop an effective controller that attains the challenges of the very high-level safety system. Hence, they require application-specific improvement for better controlling performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The purpose of this study intends to propose a system for controlling state vectors v1 and v2and in AHWR using Grey Wolf second-order sliding mode control (GW-SoSMC) technique. The main aim of the paper is to minimize the errors between the predicted and desired azimuthal angles of the system. With this proposed method, it is possible to mitigate both the chattering phenomenon and controlling performance of AHWR system. It implements a SoSMC controller based on GWO algorithm for the purpose of controlling the state vectors in the AHWR system. It aims to accomplish a controller for improving the performance of the AHWR system.
Findings
Through the performance analysis, the efficiency of the proposed GW-SoSMC technique was verified by comparing it with various conventional algorithms, such as GW-SMC, FF-SoSMC, ABC-SoSMC, GS-SoSMC and GA-SoSMC. From the analysis, it was obtained that the implemented GW-SoSMC technique was 65.3 per cent superior to GW-SMC, 65.32 per cent superior to both FF-SoSMC and 65 per cent superior to ABC-SoSMC, 65.8 per cent superior to the GS-SoSMC and 58 per cent superior to the GA-SoSMC methods. Thus, the effectiveness of the proposed method in controlling the state vectors in AHWR was obtained.
Originality/value
This paper presents a technique for controlling the state vectors in the AHWR system using GWO algorithm. This is the first work that uses GWO-based optimization for controlling state vectors in the AHWR system.
