Abstract

Purpose

Despite the rise in vegan food consumption, vegan restaurants have experienced high turnover rates. Given that non-vegans make up the majority of the customer base, this study explores the critical role of conspicuous consumption motives in driving ambivalence, which, in turn, affects intentions to revisit vegan restaurants.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a purposive sampling method, data were obtained from non-vegans who had experienced dining at vegan restaurants. The proposed relationships within the study framework were analyzed using a PLS-SEM model.

Findings

Results support the significance of the need for uniqueness and the desire for access to elite social strata in shaping conspicuous consumption motives, consequently increasing ambivalence among non-vegans. Interestingly, ambivalence was discovered to positively influence revisit intentions for vegan restaurants. This positive effect was significantly enhanced by perceived objective authenticity in vegan restaurants.

Research limitations/implications

Findings provide novel insights into the existing understanding of vegan consumption, particularly by focusing on non-vegans and their conspicuous consumption motives in the context of dining at vegan restaurants. Our approach expands the research by highlighting the greater significance of objective authenticity over existential authenticity in the context of vegan restaurants, offering practical insights to enhance their operation.

Originality/value

The study provides compelling evidence that non-vegans’ novel and non-altruistic motivations can generate favorable outcomes. Our model can serve as a fundamental baseline for vegan restaurant management, applied to design appropriate operational strategies to attract more non-vegan consumers and increase their likelihood of revisiting.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the intensified competitiveness in the wine retail industry, partnering with quality suppliers becomes critical to ensure a steady supply of high-quality products and sustainable business growth. This study aims to explore how wine supplier quality attributes impact wine retail businesses and if such effects differ depending on wine retail types.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were obtained from wine purchasing managers in Korea. To validate the proposed relationships, structural equation modeling was used. A multigroup analysis was conducted to test distinct roles of on/off-premise wine retail types within this research framework.

Findings

Results support the significance of supplier quality attributes in shaping the landscape of wine retail businesses. Operational and strategic benefits exhibited a positive effect on both financial performance and suppliers’ relationship satisfaction, thereby improving the intent to continue working with suppliers. This study revealed noteworthy distinctions in the effects of supplier quality attributes on operational and strategic benefits between on-premise and off-premise wine retailers.

Research limitations/implications

Findings provide valuable insights to wine suppliers and buyers concerning the establishment of a mutually beneficial long-term interdependent relationship. The approach sheds light on the unique dynamics of wine retail types, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the distinct roles of supplier quality attributes on on-premise and off-premise retailers.

Originality/value

This study developed an integrative framework, emphasizing the importance of supplier quality attributes in the wine retail industry. This model offers valuable insights into creating favorable buyer–supplier relationships that result in mutual benefits for both wine retailers and suppliers.

Abstract

As the global economy continues to boom, there remains a significant need for more efficient transportation and effective management in corporate logistics. In this regard, railways have been considered one of the most efficient modes for long distance transportation. In Asia, there are several extensive and direct railroads such as the TSR (Trans-Siberian-Railroad), the TCR (Trans-Chinese-Railroad) and the TMR (Trans-Mongolian-Railroad) which could connect Asia to Europe. If these railroad networks such as the TKR (Trans-Korean-Railroad) were fully operational, it is expected that they would replace a major portion of the current global trade transportation with is sent through other shipping methods. Therefore, the development of railroad networks is one of the most important steps toward an integrated international transportation system. However, in reality, it is difficult to achieve this vision because of the political and economic problems surrounding multiple countries that this network must cut across. Moreover, it is difficult to ensure the railways’ economic competitiveness when it is compared with other logistics options. In this study, we aim to discover the status quo about railway networks by focusing on the TCR and TSR. Through in-depth interviews and surveys with actual users of these networks, current issues and problems are analysed in order to make suggestions for improvements. This research also provides meaningful insights which the TKR-TSR and TKR-TCR railway networks should consider if they want to continue to be successful in the future.
