Abstract
Purpose
Much research has been conducted regarding leadership success challenges. However, few are practically oriented on whether the success of women's leadership aligns to organisational, personal and societal contexts as glass cliffs. Thus, this study aims to examine these factors and introduce how they inhibit women from leadership success.
Design/methodology/approach
This research examined the glass ceiling effects Ethiopian women leaders face. This research focused on adjusted clusters and a survey of 446 female employees from zones, woreda and kebeles. The data was processed through SPSS 25.0 to regress the values.
Findings
Breaking the glass ceiling, the glass cliffs effects on women’s income levels, the lack of an arena for self-improvement, the nature of organisation policies and challenges in teamwork were found to contribute to women’s under-representation in top leadership positions.
Research limitations/implications
The results focused only on the 94 public organisations in Ethiopia that were selected by adjusted cluster sampling.
Practical implications
Realizations of substantial change and refocusing on bringing a significant number of women to the boardrooms in the public bureaucracy, besides glass cliffs.
Social implications
Enhancing the importance of accepting women leaders.
Originality/value
To add value to the stock of literature in gender equality, this research brings a strategic focus on factors that inhibit women from top leadership positions.

Abstract
Purpose
The state space method (SSM) is good at analyzing the interfacial physical quantities in laminated materials, while it has difficulty in calculating the mechanical quantities of interior points, which can be easily evaluated by the boundary element method (BEM). However, the material has to be divided into many subdomains when the traditional BEM is applied to analyze the functionally graded material (FGM), so that the computational amount will be increased enormously. This study aims to couple these two methods to strengthen their advantages and overcome their disadvantages.
Design/methodology/approach
Herein, a state space BEM in which the SSM is coupled by the BEM is proposed to analyze the elasticity of FGMs, where one BEM domain is set and the others belong to SSM domains. The discretized elements occur only on the boundary of the BEM domain and at the interfaces between different SSM domains. In SSM domains, the horizontal interfaces of FGMs are discretized by linear elements and the variables along the vertical direction are yielded by the precise integration method.
Findings
The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparing the present results with the ones from the finite element method (FEM). It is found that the present method can provide accurate displacements and stresses in the FGMs by fewer freedom degrees in comparison with the FEM. In addition, the present method can provide continuous interfacial stresses at the interfaces between different material domains, while the interfacial stresses by the FEM are discontinuous.
Originality/value
The system equations of the state space BEM are built by combining the boundary integral equation with the state equations according to the continuity conditions at the interfaces. The mechanical parameters of any inner point can be evaluated by the boundary integral equation after the unknowns on the boundaries and interfaces are determined by the system equation.

Abstract
Purpose
Chinese face refers to reputation, others’ respect or compliance which is gained through self-representation and role-playing. The purpose of this paper is to identify and distinguish the four dimensions of face construct: personal identity-face, family identity-face, friend identity-face and occupational identity-face. Based on this, the authors discuss and investigate the influence of four different face dimensions on a consumer’s need for uniqueness (CNFU).
Design/methodology/approach
This research uses a questionnaire survey method and convenience samples. Subjects are students from a university in Wuhan operated directly under the Ministry of Education. A total of 730 questionnaires were distributed mainly in libraries and study rooms. After eliminating invalid questionnaires, 690 questionnaires were obtained. In sum, 44.1 percent research subjects are males, and 59 percent of them are undergraduate samples; 92.5 percent subjects’ monthly disposable consumption was less than 2,000 yuan.
Findings
The result shows that the influence paths and directions are different. Specifically, personal identity-face and family identity-face restrain CNFU through promoting interdependent self-construal, and friend identity-face and occupational identity-face facilitate CNFU through enhancing the consumer’s susceptibility to normative influence.
Originality/value
These findings are useful for clarify contemporary Chinese individuality-seeking consumption and conformity consumption behavior, and will shed light on form strategic practices, such as brand positioning and product communication.

Purpose
Abundance of cultural resources is a typical feature of traditional villages. It is particularly important to explore the development path of traditional villages from the perspective of cultural resources.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on symbiosis theory, establish a symbiotic development mechanism of traditional village characteristic cultural elements and use grey relation analysis (GRA) to evaluate the resource advantages of different cultural attributes. This paper proposes the traditional village development model of different symbiotic units in the county. An empirical study is conducted in conjunction with the national historical and cultural city of Xunxian County, Henan, China.
Findings
The results show that (1) according to the different attributes of humanistic cultural resources, artificial cultural resources and natural cultural resources in traditional villages, different symbiotic units can be divided, and advantageous resources can be shared through the symbiotic interface; (2) using GRA to calculate the grey relational degree between cultural resources sequence of different attributes and the sum of cultural resources sequence in the county and define as the active degree of humanistic culture, the inheritance degree of artificial culture and the integrity of natural cultural resources are shown to reflect the status of the inheritance of humanistic cultural resources, the existence of artificial cultural resources, and the protection of natural cultural resources; and (3) a comparative analysis of the active degree, inheritance, and integrity of each symbiotic unit leads to the proposal of three symbiotic models of folklore vitality, characteristic space, and natural ecology, all of which are beneficial to promote the formation of a symbiotic environment.
Originality/value
The main innovation of this paper is to put forward the research scale of symbiosis theory in the field of urban and rural planning at the county level, delimit the symbiosis units of traditional villages at the county level, complete the quantitatively evaluate cultural resources in different symbiotic units with GRA, revealing the symbiotic development mechanism of cultural resources characteristic elements in traditional villages.

Abstract
Purpose
The poor corrosion resistance of the ferrite-pearlite steel limits its application in marine engineering because of the enhanced galvanic effect caused by continuously accumulated cementite. Cr as one principal alloying element is commonly used to improve the corrosion resistance of steels. This paper aims to study the effect of Cr on corrosion behaviors of ferrite-pearlite steels in an acidic environment.
Design/methodology/approach
The tested steels were immersed in a simulated solution of 10 Wt.% NaCl with pH 0.85 for 72 h to evaluate the corrosion rate. After the immersion test, the corrosion morphologies and products were tested by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction. Meanwhile, an electrochemical workstation was used to study the electrochemical behaviors of samples.
Findings
At the initial corrosion stage, the corrosion rate increased in the sequence of Cr0, Cr0.5 and Cr1 steels, which was because of the competitive effect between the area ratio and the driving force caused by alloyed Cr. However, Cr1 steel exhibited the best corrosion resistance after a 72-h immersion test. This was because the alloyed Cr promoted the formation of protective Fe2O3 and FeCr2O4, which suppressed the preferential dissolution of ferrite and, thus, reduced the accumulation rate of carbides, resulting in the weakened galvanic corrosion.
Originality/value
This paper reports the role that Cr plays in the galvanic corrosion of ferrite-pearlite steels, which is important for the engineering application of ferrite-pearlite steels in marine environment.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of illegal insider trading enforcement in China by focusing, among other things, on the Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission's (CSRC) enforcement actions in the period 1993‐2006.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper discusses the CSRC's enforcement policies and practices of insider trading regulation, based upon administrative and judicial cases, face‐to‐face interviews with regulators, and policy documents.
Findings
A major finding of the study is the paucity of insider trading cases and the lack of convictions for insider trading offences in China. The campaign against securities offences did not actually come with the stricter enforcement of insider trading laws. A primary challenge in the insider trading regulation comes from the fact that most insider trading cases involve high‐ranking government and party officials. The CSRC lacks the power to directly administer discipline and penalties on government officials and party cadres for insider trading offences.
Research limitations/implications
It is recommended that the CSRC be given more power, more resources and more trained regulators to detect and address insider trading activities. It is also recommended that the CSRC improve its surveillance capabilities by fully utilizing sophisticated computer surveillance software systems, by improving inter‐agency and inter‐market information‐sharing, and by cooperating with other countries' regulators and participating in the ISG's database to detect possible international insider trading.
Originality/value
The paper will be of interest to researchers in the field of financial crime and securities regulation. Regulators, the private sector and government departments will also benefit from an analysis of Chinese insider trading enforcement cases. This paper also suggests better strategies for dealing with insider trading offences in China. A fair and orderly market is crucial for investors in the Chinese market.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a numerical study of conjugate heat transfer by mixed convection and conduction in a lid-driven enclosure with thick vertical porous layer. The effect of the relevant parameters: Richardson number (Ri=0.1, 1, 10) and thermal conductivity ratio (Rk=0.1, 1, 10, 100) are investigated.
Design/methodology/approach
The studied system is a two dimensional lid-driven enclosure with thick vertical porous layer. The left vertical wall of the enclosure is allowed to move in its own plane at a constant velocity. The enclosure is heated from the right vertical wall isothermally. The left and the right vertical walls are isothermal but temperature of the outside of the right vertical wall is higher than that of the left vertical wall. Horizontal walls are insulated. The governing equations are solved by finite volume method and the SIMPLE algorithm.
Findings
From the finding results, it is observed that: for the two studied cases, heat transfer rate along the hot wall is a decreasing function of thermal conductivity ratio irrespective of Richardson numbers contrary to the heat transfer rate along the fluid-porous layer interface which is an increasing function of thermal conductivity ratio. At forced convection dominant regime, the difference between heat transfer rate for upward and downward moving wall is insensitive to the thermal conductivity ratio. For downward moving wall, average Nusselt number is higher than that of upward moving wall.
Practical implications
Some applications: building applications, furnace design, nuclear reactors, air solar collectors.
Originality/value
From the bibliographic work and the authors’ knowledge, the conjugate mixed convection in lid-driven partially porous enclosures has not yet been investigated which motivates the present work that represent a continuation of the preceding investigations.

Abstract
Purpose
Electric motor heating during biomass recovery and its handling on conveyor is a serious concern for the motor performance. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to design and develop a hardware prototype of master–slave electric motors based biomass conveyor system to use the motors under normal operating conditions without overheating.
Design/methodology/approach
The hardware prototype of the system used master–slave electric motors for embedded controller operated robotic arm to automatically replace conveyor motors by one another. A mixed signal based embedded controller (C8051F226DK), fully compliant with IEEE 1149.1 specifications, was used to operate the entire system. A precise temperature measurement of motor with the help of negative temperature coefficient sensor was possible due to the utilization of industry standard temperature controller (N76E003AT20). Also, a pulse width modulation based speed control was achieved for master–slave motors of biomass conveyor.
Findings
As compared to conventional energy based mains supply, the system is self-sufficient to extract more energy from solar supply with an energy increase of 11.38%. With respect to conventional energy based \ of 47.31%, solar energy based higher energy saving of 52.69% was reported. Also, the work achieved higher temperature reduction of 34.26% of the motor as compared to previous cooling options.
Originality/value
The proposed technique is free from air, liquid and phase-changing material based cooling materials. As a consequence, the work prevents the wastage of these materials and does not cause the risk of health hazards. Also, the motors are used with their original dimensions without facing any leakage problems.
