OCLC produces a number of products for CD‐ROM, derived variously from public domain databases in the US, such as ERIC, AGRICOLA and NTIS, and from subsets of its own massive 18,500,000 record Union Catalog. The initial set covered three main subject areas: Education; Agriculture; and Science and Technology. The CD‐products are referrred to as Search CD450 and are intended to support reference work and access to subject information. In addition, a CD‐ROM based cataloguing product has been developed: its suitability in the UK and Europe is currently being evaluated by OCLC Europe. Towards the end of 1987, OCLC set up an evaluation project at King's College Library, University of London, to assess the ERIC databases produced as part of the Search CD450 products. This article describes the broad findings of that project together with the facilities offered by CD450.

At the beginning of the October 1987 session OCLC set up an evaluation project at King's College Library in London, whereby the site library serving the Centre for Educational Studies would act as one of the European test sites for OCLC's Search CD450 for their Version of ERIC on CD‐ROM. The paper describes the provision of equipment, software, accompanying literature and assessment questionnaire, as well as the main characteristics of the system and the search facilities. The implications for the library of staff training and a heavy additional programme of user education are also discussed. User reaction was extremely favourable, and many more readers made use of the facility than had requested online searches, whereas it had previously been unusual for any one reader to have more than two online searches per year.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a short history of the first year of operation of an institutional repository (IR) at a midwestern state university. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is anecdotal, reviewing aims, rationales, and strategies, and offering advice and some counter‐intuitive lessons.

The paper finds that voluntary self‐archiving by faculty or campus publishers is exceptional or rare, but there are other ways of populating an IR with valuable content. IR's should seek original material, including new dissertations, as well as previously published articles. IR's should offer a variety of services to make faculty participation as effortless as possible. IR's can increase usage by efforts directed at publicizing their resources and offerings.

The paper concerns one institution, but the challenges faced are common to all new university institutional repositories.

Alec has carved out a path for himself. In many senses, he chose “The Road Less Travelled”. He has never shied away from challenging “The System” and defending the rights of the marginalized and socially excluded. It is not a road for the faint-hearted.

For systems to change, radical thinkers need to show the way. “Change keeps us safe” (Stuart Bell).

Alec was a well-known and highly respected cognitive behavioural academic practitioner and the author of key textbooks in the field. He then decided to reinvent himself as an autoethnographer. This has brought him into contact with a much more diverse group of people. It has also brought him home to himself.

This chapter presents an investigation of the sex abuse scandal within the Catholic Church through the lens of stigmatization for the purpose of elaborating the theory, making it more widely applicable across multiples levels of analysis. Much like individuals, organizations must engage in information management in order to conceal discrediting information that would blemish their reputation. Given the number of people who comprise an organization, such secrecy relies on teamwork in order to contain damaging information. Based on an analysis of investigative journalist accounts of the scandal between 1985 and 2014, I present a typology representing the system of organizational secrecy developed by the Catholic Church. While organizations like the church have more structural resources at their disposal to ensure information control is maintained, their size and the varying levels of commitment to secrecy on the part of individual members of the team ultimately work against them.

This paper proposes a framework that focuses on instilling feelings of gratitude within consumers. Participant sports events are often funded largely by sponsorship revenues, and their consumer base is considered to represent an identifiably unique market. These conditions are argued to be favourable for integrating a gratitude framework. A model is presented that depicts gratitude as a mediating mechanism within a reciprocal relationship between the sponsor and the consumers. It includes purchase intentions as the behavioural outcome of gratitude. The findings suggest that incorporating feelings of gratitude may prove to be advantageous for potential sponsors within the participant sports industry.

The purpose of this paper is to make a case for the strength of qualitative work, but more specifically for various kinds of ethnographies.

The authors argue that global neoliberal and audit culture policies have crept into academic research, tertiary education practice, and research culture.

The authors then discuss major tenets of and make the case for the use of auto-, duo-, and collaborative-ethnographies as caring practices and research method(ologies) that may in fact push back against such hegemonic neoliberal practices in the academy. Finally, the authors link these caring types of ethnographies to the papers within this special issue.
