Abstract
Offers the results of an attempt to trace and characterise the origins of what is sometimes termed motivational research. Proclaims that motivational research, complementing formal market research, arises in economic conditions of competitive mass‐production associated with relative affluence and herein is an historical guide to the part played by psychology in modern marketing. Maintains that research effort prior to the introduction of motivational research was concerned with defining markets and developing survey techniques, especially in relation to sampling, questionnaire design, structured interviewing, etc. Concludes that the treatment of many matters of interest here, have had to be relatively condensed but a future article proposes to adjust this.

Abstract
Given the current marginalization of social studies education in schools, this paper explores the social studies centered community-school model of Elsie Ripley Clapp, who was a significant educator, scholar, and leader within progressive education. A former graduate assistant of John Dewey, Clapp put progressive pedagogical ideology into practice in the 1920s and 1930s through her curriculum development and administrative leadership in rural schools such as: the Ballard School in Kentucky and the Arthurdale Schools in West Virginia. She developed a social studies focused, experiential curriculum rooted in her vision of schools as democratic spaces. First, biographical information about Clapp’s life, educational experiences, and commitment to social justice is provided. Second, Clapp’s community school model at the Ballard School is explored. The model, which united people across social class and centered on local history, geography, and economics, provides implications for how we might re-envision our current approaches to social studies education.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the influence of dimensions of the psychological contract on strengthening customers' switching barriers through the mediating role of service brand love.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used a cross-sectional survey research design to collect data from 406 respondents from commercial banks in the banking industry. A quantitative approach using structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data collected through structured questionnaires.
Findings
The findings revealed that dimensions of the psychological contract, namely, ideological, transactional and relational psychological contract, significantly influence the strengthening of customers' switching barriers when mediated by service brand love.
Practical implications
Managers should consider adopting high-intensity relationship approaches that go beyond mere customer satisfaction to ensure customer retention.
Originality/value
While customer retention remains the primary avenue for establishing competitive advantages, there remain unresolved issues regarding what determines customers’ intentions to stay or switch. This study represents one of the initial endeavors to explore the psychological contract within the context of the service industry. It contributes to the existing knowledge by enhancing the understanding of the mechanisms that can impact customers' switching barriers and complements the literature on customer retention in the service domain.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore debates about the powers social workers may need to undertake safeguarding enquiries where access to the adult is denied.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper takes as a starting point a scoping review of the literature undertaken as part of a study exploring social work responses to situations where they are prevented from speaking to an adult at risk by a third party.
Findings
A power of entry might be one solution to situations where social workers are prevented from accessing an adult at risk. The paper focuses on the Scottish approach to legal powers in adult safeguarding, established by the Adult Support and Protection Act (Scotland) 2007 and draws out messages for adult safeguarding in England and elsewhere. The literature review identified that debates over the Scottish approach are underpinned by differing conceptualisations of vulnerability, autonomy and privacy, and the paper relates these conceptualisations to different theoretical stances.
Social implications
The paper concludes that the literature suggests that a more socially mediated rather than an essentialist understanding of the concepts of vulnerability, autonomy and privacy allows for more nuanced approaches to social work practice in respect of using powers of entry and intervention with adults at risk who have capacity to make decisions.
Originality/value
This paper provides a novel perspective on debates over how to overcome challenges to accessing adults at risk in adult safeguarding through an exploration of understandings of vulnerability, privacy and autonomy.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to apply a robust methodology to establish relationships between user-configurable process parameters of commercial desktop stereolithography (SLA) printers and dimensional accuracy of a custom-designed test artifact.
Design/methodology/approach
A detailed response surface methodology study, Box–Behnken incomplete factorial design of four factors with three levels, was carried out to evaluate process performance of desktop SLA printers. The selected factors were as follows: printing orientation angle in x-direction, printing orientation angle in y-direction, position on build platform in spatial x-coordinate, position on build tray in spatial y-coordinate and layer thickness. The proposed artifact was designed to include 12 feature groups including thin walls, holes, bosses, bridges and overhangs. Two responses were associated with the features: the dimensional deviation according to the designed value and the minimum feature size.
Findings
Layer thickness was the most significant factor in 70% of the analyzed responses. For example, measurement deviation was reduced about 90% when cylindrical holes were printed with the lowest layer thickness. Further, in many cases, dimensional deviation was minimized for features at the center of the platform, where the beam cures the resin in a straight line. However, at distant positions, accuracy could be improved by compensating for beam deviation by changing the object orientation angle.
Originality/value
The findings of this study can serve, both generally and specifically, for SLA designers and engineers who wish to optimize printing process variables and feature location to achieve high-dimensional accuracy and further understand the many coupled considerations among part design, build configuration and process performance.

Abstract
Purpose
The involvement of patients or members of the public within public health, health and social care and addictions services is growing in the UK and internationally but is less common in gambling support services. The purpose of this study was to explore Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) infrastructures and engagement channels used in health and care services and debate their transferability to the gambling support sector (including research, education and treatment).
Design/methodology/approach
A narrative review examined data from six English language electronic databases, NHS evidence and grey literature covering the period 2007–2019. We identified 130 relevant items from UK literature. A workshop was held in London, England, with people with lived experience of gambling harm to seek their views on and applicability of the review findings to gambling services.
Findings
Synthesis of literature and workshop data was undertaken. Main themes addressed “What works” in relation to: building infrastructures and organising involvement of people with lived experience; what people want to be involved in; widening participation and sustaining involvement and respecting people with lived experience.
Practical implications
Examination of the literature about involvement and engagement of patients, service users and the public in public health, health and social care and addiction services provides potentially useful examples of good practice which may be adopted by gambling services.
Originality/value
The involvement of people with lived experience of gambling harms in gambling support services is under-explored, with little published evidence of what constitutes good practice amongst self-organising groups/networks/grassroots organisations or rights-based/empowerment-based approaches.

Determining the strategic thrust of the firm, it may be argued, is the principal task of top management. This task is aided by recent theories of business and marketing strategy, including the normative imperatives based on industry factors, resource factors, competences, market orientation, and relationship marketing. Choosing wisely from among the various theories of strategy requires an accurate understanding of the contexts of competition. This article argues that resource‐advantage theory, an evolutionary, disequilibrium‐provoking process theory of competition, provides that understanding. That is, resource‐advantage theory grounds theories of business and marketing strategy.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine consumer attitude toward gamification in the context of over-the-top (OTT) media service. The particular focus of this paper is on game mechanics from the mechanics-dynamics-aesthetics framework and its effects on consumer attitude toward both gamification and OTT media service provider brand.
Design/methodology/approach
A 2 × 2 × 2 between-subjects factorial experiment to examine the three core elements of game mechanics – components, controls and courses on consumer attitude, which was operationalized in eight vignettes with a sample size of 296.
Findings
It was found that the three elements in game mechanics demonstrated a multiplicative effect. The different combinations of elements in game mechanics would result in eliciting different consumer attitudes toward gamification and brand. Despite one combination that attained a high positive consumer attitude toward gamification in OTT, that same combination was not effective in creating a high positive attitude toward the OTT provider brand. The findings demonstrate the need for OTT providers to be clear of their gamification objectives before selecting the combination of game mechanics.
Research limitations/implications
This study adds to the body of knowledge on consumer attitude toward gamification, especially in the OTT market where there is still literature is limited.
Practical implications
OTT providers should determine their objectives for using gamification and design the game mechanics according to the optimal combination of elements – components, controls and courses.
Originality/value
According to the author’s knowledge, this is the first paper to examine consumer attitude toward gamification and OTT provider based on game mechanics. It provides an understanding on the interaction of elements in game mechanics and shows that different element combinations can be used to meet different goals.
