Abstract

Purpose

The Education and Employers Taskforce is a London‐based charity that was launched in October 2009 to help employers and educational organisations form effective relationships. The aim of this paper is to explore the benefits to employers and employees to be gained from engaging with schools on a voluntary basis.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper highlights research in four areas – staff development, staff engagement, recruitment, and corporate reputation – and concludes with a case study demonstrating how volunteering can be beneficial for business.

Findings

There are significant benefits for employers and employees across the four research areas from engaging with education and young people.

Originality/value

Owing to the positive impact on personnel performance, the paper suggests that education volunteering should sit within the HR function.

Abstract

Purpose

Young offenders are known to have more chaotic experiences in childhood than non-offenders, and this impacts on their attachments, coping styles and early maladaptive schemas (EMS). The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between these factors and drug use.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used self-report questionnaires on a sample of 105 incarcerated young offenders.

Findings

Attachment styles did not differentiate drug users from non-drug users. Drug users were found to be no more likely than non-drug users to use avoidant coping styles. However, they were more likely to have emotional coping styles. Drug users had more EMS, and overall, those with insecure attachments had more EMS. Individuals with emotional coping styles scored higher than those with rational coping styles on several EMS. Those with emotional coping styles scored lower on the emotional inhibition EMS than those with rational coping styles.

Practical implications

The evidence presented has implications for the understanding of drug use in young offenders by: providing support to the model proposed by Young et al. (2003) regarding how insecure attachments can contribute to EMS; providing support for Crittenden’s (2008) model of attachment whereby problematic behaviours such as drug use can be a strategy the individual uses to protect themselves at times of threat or discomfort; highlighting the need for an integrated model of substance use in offenders which incorporates early experiences, attachments and EMS; and highlighting why substance use may become a coping strategy in young offenders and how to engage them to meet their needs in pro-social ways.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the understanding of attachment, coping and drug use in a young offender population. It sets foundations in the authors’ understanding of patterns of EMS in young drug users and highlights the need for an integrated model of substance use which incorporates early experiences, attachments and EMS.

Abstract

Recently, several studies have appeared in the literature that have investigated various hypotheses involving the relationships between ethnicity, gender, job satisfaction, turnover intentions, and the personality characteristic termed type A. Aims to examine the relationships between personality, job satisfaction and turnover intentions, and to determine if the moderating variables – ethnicity, gender, occupational setting, and level of decision making authority – have an impact on these relationships. The study was conducted using a modified meta‐analysis. The analysis did not detect an overall significant relationship between personality and job satisfaction or turnover intentions, but did find an inverse relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intentions that was consistent with previously reported research. Neither gender nor ethnicity was found to be a significant moderating variable influencing the relationships between the primary variables; however, both occupational setting and level of decision making authority were found to have a significant impact on the relationships between the primary variables.

But we are so glad to have a chance of reunion after the war that we are grateful there is a town which can take us in May if at no other time. If any are found ready to complain of time or place let them consult their own personal difficulty in finding somewhere to spend a holiday this summer; that difficulty, multiplied a thousand‐fold is the dilemma of any association that seeks to confer in body in the genial months. May, then, which in spite of the poets is a bleak if sometimes sunny month, will be accepted and made the best of.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the extent to which three subgroups – people with mental health conditions, people belonging to sexual minority and gender groups and Indigenous peoples – have been “left behind” by countries implementing the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Design/methodology/approach

A general review of electronic bibliographical databases to provide an overview of smoking prevalence among the three groups and interventions designed specifically to reduce their smoking rates.

Findings

Although explanations and specific rates differ, two trends are consistent across all three groups. First, information reported in the past two decades suggests that smoking prevalence is disproportionately high among people with mental health conditions, and in the rainbow and indigenous communities. Second, most cessation programmes are targeted at majority politically dominant groups, missing opportunities to reduce smoking rates in these minority communities.

Research limitations/implications

There is a general dearth of data preventing detailed analysis. Better data collection efforts are required. Trials to identify effective smoking reduction interventions for marginalised groups are needed.

Social implications

It is socially unjust that these groups are being systematically ignored by tobacco control initiatives. A failure to equitably reduce tobacco harms among all groups across society has contributed to the perceived concentration of smoking in some subgroups. The increasing stigmatisation of people who smoke then adds a marginality, compounding the negative effects associated with belonging to a marginalised group. Ongoing marginalisation of these groups is an important determinant of smoking.

Originality/value

Cross-case analysis of neglected subgroups with disproportionately high smoking rates suggests social marginalisation is a shared and important determinant of smoking prevalence.

Abstract

The accepted wisdom is that Northern Ireland is a traditional society within which women’s primary role is defined as homemaker and mother. Examines data on the labour market participation of women in Northern Ireland, drawing comparisons with the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the European Union. Examines four hypotheses as possible explanations for mothers continuing in paid employment. Concludes that, despite living in a society seemingly more traditional than that in many other European Union countries, mothers of young children in Northern Ireland may be more likely to be in employment because they can call on a network of family support to provide informal child care.
