Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this paper is to advance a critical pedagogical framework, combining critical pedagogy, design research, architectural theory and experiential learning. It addresses global challenges at the intersection between urban peripheries and the Anthropocene – the centre of the climate crisis is a spatial crisis – preparing students as engaged architect citizens capable of reshaping collective life.
Design/methodology/approach
The framework is examined through a case study of the author’s final year architectural theory module, “The Periphery as a Critical Project”, elucidating its theoretical underpinning and presenting a visual analysis of student projects. Methods include reflective module design, fieldwork, close-reading of literature across disciplines, design research, experiential learning strategies and an inventive “theorypractice”.
Findings
The research demonstrates that theorypractice articulates a transformative and experiential learning experience, articulating architectural education as a site for critical engagement with urgent challenges. The approach equips students with critical thinking and making skills, cultivates a commitment to civic responsibility and encourages alternative visions for the Anthropocene. The paper concludes with concepts and practices to define an emerging architectural pedagogy for the Anthropocene.
Practical implications
The research provides guidance for educators in architecture, aligning with RIBA reforms emphasising “history, theories, methodologies” and experiential learning in allied fields such as urban studies, environmental planning and social policy, focused on climate and social resilience, spatial justice and critical literacy. More broadly it aims at preparing engaged architect citizens who can work on and with the world.
Originality/value
This paper contributes an original framework and novel methodology, bringing together theoretical and design research from architecture, urban studies, design, critical pedagogy and environmental humanities to expand experiential learning within architectural theory, an underexplored position. It addresses urgent issues related to urban peripheries, climate change, and how we educate future architects in times of crisis, offering a model for allied fields facing similar societal challenges.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this article is to develop an architectural pedagogy for the Anthropocene. The author reflect on a project within a postgraduate architectural theory module to address the following questions: How can architectural pedagogy articulate critical modes of production that contribute to quality education in the time of the Anthropocene? What are the ideas, values and practices needed?
Design/methodology/approach
The method employed is close reading of texts focussed on three areas: critical theory and pedagogy, political theory and the Anthropocene, and architectural theory and typological urbanism. These theoretical narratives are placed in dialogue with a reflection on a design research pedagogical project. The theoretical narratives and design research project seek to articulate the multidimensionality of critical education. The methodology enacted in the paper performs the pedagogy of the classroom.
Findings
The study yields compelling conclusions regarding the potential for rethinking the idea of typology under the pressure of the Anthropocene and of critical pedagogy combined with design research to take positions on urgent political and social matters. The author concludes with a toolkit of concepts, values and knowledge practices.
Originality/value
At a time when disciplines tend towards discrete specialisation, while the need for knowledge production is ever more transdisciplinary, this paper develops inventive techniques and conceptual frameworks for supporting approaches where different fields and ideas make contact as a collective task in the era of the Anthropocene. It updates theories of typology to address contemporary pressures.

Abstract
This chapter analyzes a geographic quasi-experiment embedded in a cluster-randomized experiment in Honduras. In the experiment, average treatment effects of conditional cash transfers on school enrollment and child labor were large – especially in the poorest experimental blocks – and could be generalized to a policy-relevant population given the original sample selection criteria. In contrast, the geographic quasi-experiment yielded point estimates that, for two of three dependent variables, were attenuated. A judicious policy analyst without access to the experimental results might have provided misleading advice based on the magnitude of point estimates. We assessed two main explanations for the difference in point estimates, related to external and internal validity.

The combination of previously unassociated terms in a metaphor can helpfully illustrate particular characteristics of a person, phenomenon or practice. However, it can also obfuscate because the focus on some elements may come at the expense of others. The metaphor of the landscape is somewhat ubiquitous in academic literature, and this paper is specifically interested in the ‘higher education landscape’, which is widely used in scholarly – as well as media and policy – writing. By applying thematic analysis to a sample of publications which invoke the term, this paper comprises what Haslanger calls a descriptive and ameliorative approach to investigate both how and why this metaphor is used. By considering these publications cumulatively, we can identify that the higher education landscape enables scholars to simultaneously acknowledge higher education's temporal, social and political positioning, its state of what can feel like permanent and wide-ranging flux, and its diverse cast of interrelated actors. In this way, it serves as a useful and evocative container metaphor for higher education's activities and constituents and the interrelationships and tensions between them. At the same time, its somewhat indiscriminate and indeterminate use can conflate and mask the detail and nature of these dynamics, and it is possible to discern in its application a collective sense of nervousness and uncertainty about higher education more generally.

Abstract
The quality of students' relationships with their teachers plays a significant role in their success in school. Social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculums show great promise for supporting student development. However, quality implementation requires that teachers recognize and understand how their behavior and interactions with students impact the development of these skills. The Prosocial Classroom Model proposes that teacher social and emotional competencies (SECs) play a critical role in creating and maintaining a classroom where everyone feels safe, connected, and engaged in learning. In this chapter, we extend the understanding of SEC to include leadership styles as defined by evolutionary motivational systems theory. We argue that a critical dimension of effective SEL instruction and teacher SEC is effective leadership that skillfully applies an understanding of the social and emotional dimensions of classroom interactions that promote motivation, engagement, and learning. Implications for educational theory, policy and practice, and research are discussed.

Abstract
Biodiversity loss now ranks as one of the most significant global drivers of environmental change. In an increasingly urbanized world, there is enormous potential to address this problem through conservation, restoration, and creation of new urban ecosystems. This chapter explores how nature-based solutions (NBS) can contribute to addressing the urgent problem of biodiversity loss in a way that goes beyond just greening gray environments. It then explores the alignment (and misalignment) between the ways in which NBS is framed as a nature conservation tool globally and the ways in which biodiversity is considered in urban approaches to NBS. Finally, the chapter explores the ways in which NBS might become an essential part of the solution to biodiversity and ecosystem decline. It discusses how NBS can be effectively leveraged to address the biodiversity crisis in urban areas, through conservation, restoration, and efforts to create thriving places for both people and nature. Although the concept of NBS in urban areas is fairly divorced from its nature conservation origins, reconnecting with those ecological roots is important for creating biodiverse, resilient cities. In so doing, NBS could offer a unified concept for environmental management in urban areas that integrates the ecological benefits of nature conservation with an innovative focus on confronting major societal challenges. Though this is a demanding task, it could provide a fit-for-purpose approach for conserving biodiversity and supporting functional ecosystems in the Anthropocene.

This article explores the brewers links with the hotel, consumer catering and leisure markets. It identifies that whilst this trend was established in the 1960's, it has accelerated after the publication of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission report into the brewing industry. Whilst, some companies have continued to be both a brewer and retailer — others have split that role. Focus is placed on four companies that have strong links with the hotel, consumer catering and leisure markets. In these cases turnover from the company's brewing division is less than 50% of the total.
