Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to present the findings from a study designed to gain a general understanding of community attitudes and experiences associated with gatecrashing at outdoor music festivals (OMFs).

Design/methodology/approach

This study was an exploratory, descriptive study with data collection involving a web based, survey tool and convenience and snowballing sampling methodologies. A total of 196 people from across Australia participated in the study.

Findings

The key findings were that 15.3 per cent of the respondents were supportive of others gatecrashing, 65.3 per cent were against others gatecrashing while the remaining study participants did not care either way (19.4 per cent). About 39 per cent of the respondents had considered gatecrashing an event however the majority of this group (86 per cent) did not go through with these intentions. The remainder of the respondents (61 per cent) had never personally considered gatecrashing an event. In total, 11 per cent of study participants reported having gatecrashed events and there was generally a level of planning associated with their gatecrashing experiences. The male respondents were more supportive and more likely to have considered gatecrashing an event than the female participants. Males also made up the majority of the study participants that had gatecrashed events.

Research limitations/implications

The collection of data involved the use of convenience and snowballing sampling methodologies and voluntary participation. As these methods are non‐probability based and so generalisations from this sample group were not be discussed in terms of the wider population.

Practical implications

It is expected that these findings will inform the work of event organisers and regulatory authorities involved in managing gatecrashing at these events.

Social implications

This study provides supportive evidence to inform education campaigns designed to reduce the impacts of gatecrashing at outdoor music events.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the body of knowledge on gatecrashing behaviour within the context of OMFs.

Abstract

This opening chapter of the edited volume, Childhood, Youth and Activism: Demands for Rights and Justice from Young People and Their Advocates, explores activism and advocacy – by and for children and young people. It begins by considering how activism has been understood in the scholarly literature, before making a case for a broad and inclusive conceptualisation of what counts as this particular form of social action. Relatedly, it examines the contours of the relationship between activism and advocacy, drawing attention to the ways in which these concepts converge, an issue that is particularly salient when applied to the categories of child and youth. Themes that emerge in research on child and youth activism are then drawn out and we identify some of the key issues that animate this work across various disciplines. These include observations that young people have long been central to social movements, the role of social media in youth activism, the nature of child and adult relationships in social movement organisations, and some of the issues that arise for young activists in relation to intersectional identities. To this we add debates regarding the politics of recognition, questions of voice and agency, and responsibility and their temporal registers. This discussion also foreshadows themes that emerge in the chapters across this volume. Finally, we offer a reflection on some of the conceptual issues raised when considering the book in its entirety, including those of voice, responsibility for the future, the politics of possibility and hope, and the many different forms and practices that activism and advocacy for and by young people take.

Abstract

This chapter depicts the burden of suicidal behavior among African American males. It describes the public health approach to preventing suicidal behavior among African American males. This approach includes assessing and describing the problem; identifying causes or risk and protective factors; developing and evaluating programs and policies; and implementing and disseminating findings and activities. The chapter provides a review of the epidemiology of fatal and non-fatal suicidal behavior; a summary of what is known about the risk and protective factors of the problem; and a descriptive analysis of the circumstances associated with suicides among young African American males is presented. Lastly, the authors give a summary of evidenced-based prevention programs which could be applied in preventing male suicidal behavior.

Abstract

Economics and political philosophy tend to lead separate existences in separate university departments. This paper argues that there are gains to be had in the understanding of the teaching of economics if the intellectual divide between these disciplines is bridged. The history of economic thought owes its evolution in part to responses at particular points in time to the enduring questions of political philosophy. A more deep‐seated understanding of economics and of HET is therefore available if considered in conscious alliance with the history of political philosophy (HPP). In short, the argument of this paper ‐ which considers five dimensions of the interdependence of HET and HPP ‐ is the reverse of Scott Gordon’s conclusion that economists have little or nothing to learn from philosophers.

Abstract

Hostile countermobilization is a crucial, yet relatively understudied, factor in radicalizing movement tactics and generating political violence. This chapter focuses on the movement–countermovement interactions between the Civil Rights Movement and the Loyalist movement in Northern Ireland to clarify the emergence and intensification of political violence in the 1968–1969 years. The interactions between the civil rights mobilization and the loyalist countermobilization created the conditions to fuel both protest-based and sectarian violence, setting the terrain for the eruption of the Troubles. Relying on quantitative data on the actors participating to contentious collective events, as well as original archival research, this chapter shows how the loyalist countermobilization activated mechanisms of object shift and tactical codependency that facilitated the emergence of radicalization in Northern Ireland.

Abstract

Purpose – This chapter describes a university-based reading clinic for struggling readers. Created over 40 years ago, this reading clinic continually evolves as it is founded on well-grounded theory and the most current research. The purpose of the chapter is to explain this foundation and how it has informed the structure and day-to-day operations of a successful clinic program.

Methodology/approach – The reading clinic described in this chapter is based largely on the theoretical premises of self-determination theory. This theory has been widely researched in a variety of fields and contexts, including educational settings. Self-determination theory research and reading research, conducted from a multitude of perspectives, provide support for appropriate practices designed to create a motivating classroom environment.

Practical implications – The ideas presented in this chapter show how research and theory can be successfully applied to classroom settings. The author describes various ways in which the theory and research have led to specific, practical decisions in the reading clinic setting. Broadening the use of these practices to regular classroom contexts is also discussed.

Social implications – Despite research that has established how teachers can create a meaningful, motivating classroom environment, unsound practices continue to be used in classrooms everywhere. If, as most educators claim, we want students to become independent thinkers who are able to contribute meaningfully to society, then we need to seriously examine the controlling, performance-oriented, competitive practices that are typical in many classrooms today. We must move toward creating classrooms where the focus is on learning and where children enjoy ownership of the learning process. This chapter describes a program for struggling readers that operates from this stance.

Abstract

This chapter presents a compilation of the historical approach towards inclusive education in the Plurinational State of Bolivia. It describes the regulatory framework, the evolution and status of inclusive education in Bolivia. Consideration is given to legal implications and research that highlights inclusion in practice. A brief case study is provided of how a high school manages inclusion. While the substantial focus in Bolivia has been on the inclusion of indigenous peoples to address prior discrimination and exclusion, limited attention has been given to the inclusion of learners with disability and other special educational needs. The discussion focuses on future directions that need to address more equitable approaches for all learners.
