Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to begin the integration of two separate but clearly related streams of research. Feedback and feedback-seeking have been separate areas of research for decades. In this paper, the authors argue that full understanding of feedback and its effects will not be possible unless these two literatures are integrated. Instead of just focusing on what would motivate people to seek feedback, how often and from whom, the authors argue that closer examination of how feedback-seeking affects feedback outcomes is warranted. Future directions for this research are discussed, including several research proposals.
Design/methodology/approach
Integrative review.
Findings
After a brief review of the feedback and feedback-seeking literatures, the authors use theory on cognition and judgment to argue that feedback that is sought may differ in content from feedback that is unsought. Additionally, employees who seek out feedback may react differently to feedback than those who receive feedback without seeking it out. As recipient reactions are critical in how (or whether) feedback affects performance, the full context of the feedback process must be considered, including the impetus for feedback.
Originality/value
These two streams of literature have been existing independent of each other for some years. Yet, is should be clear that not only why or how one seeks feedback but how one reacts to that feedback should be examined. Furthermore, whether people deal with sought feedback differently than with feedback that is not sought needs to be studied.

Existe una larga tradición que trata los efectos del feedback en los resultados, pero, tradicionalmente, esta investigación se ha centrado en el feedback que se da sin que este sea buscado. Más recientemente se ha desarrollado una literatura sobre el feedback buscado. Estas dos corrientes de la literatura se han desarrollado de manera casi independiente, aunque en última instancia ambas estén interesadas en como el feedback afecta al comportamiento. El objetivo de este artículo es revisar brevemente estas dos literaturas y después tratar de integrarlas en una visión más coherente del proceso de feedback. La revisión se traduce en una serie de preguntas de investigación relativas a las similitudes y diferencias entre ambos tipos de feedback. Esperamos que ello genere investigación que reconozca la necesidad de considerar ambos tipos de feedback.
Diseño/metología/aproximación
Los autores revisan la literatura en las dos áreas de la investigación en feedback y sugieren una serie de preguntas de investigación sobre los efectos diferenciales de cada tipo de feedback.
Resultados
Los autores utilizan la investigación en procesos cognitivos para sugerir como el feeback que se busca puede generar reacciones diferentes a cuando el feedback es dado, y como esto puede afectar a la efectividad de las dos formas de feedback.
Originalidad/valor
El artículo representa la mayor integración de las dos literaturas sobre feedback. Como resultado, el artículo presenta implicaciones importantes sobre cómo debe administrarse el feedback para mejorar el desempeño organizativo.

Mais recentemente se desenvolveu uma literatura sobre o feedback procurado. Estas duas correntes da literatura se desenvolveram de forma quase independente, embora na última instancia ambas estejam interessadas em como o feedback afeta al comportamento. O objetivo de este artigo é revisar brevemente estas duas literaturas e posteriormente tratar de integrar ambas numa visão mais coerente do processo de feedback. A revisão se traduz numa serie de perguntas de investigação relativas as semelhanças e diferenças entre ambos tipos de feedback. Esperamos que isso gere investigação que reconheça a necessidade de considerar ambos tipos de feedback.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relevance of caste identity in applied settings. The authors do this within the larger framework of affirmative action programs (AAPs) or “reservations” in India. The paper explores the interplay of a primordial identity like caste with the modern institutions representing equality – a context unique to India.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper reports the findings of two experimental studies collecting data using Mechanical Turk.
Findings
The first study finds that an individual hired under the AAP is perceived poorly on his/her competence and reward worthiness. The second study finds support for the influence of an individual’s conception of modern casteism and his/her caste identity as factors in shaping attitudes toward AAP.
Research limitations/implications
The paper lays the groundwork but does not explore the contours of casteism in contemporary India. Understanding of this construct as well as the impact of factors as region, education, urbanization, religion, nature of employment, etc. on caste dynamics should be considered by future research.
Practical implications
The paper uncovers some similarities between Indian and Western findings, but it also demonstrates key differences between findings related to race-based AAPs in the West and the caste-based AAP in India. This understanding will guide discourses on diversity management in under-researched countries like India. The findings can sensitize organizations to the need for addressing unconscious biases related to caste.
Social implications
The paper underscores the continuing relevance of caste in modern India and the negative perceptions of lower castes. The paper finds that individuals with an appreciation of the subtle forms of casteism are sympathetic to programs that promote social equality. In modern social contexts this nuanced operationalization of casteism can be a relevant indicator of caste dynamics.
Originality/value
This is the first empirical study to examine caste-based AAP in India in an applied study and unpacks the psychological underpinnings of the attitudes toward AAP.

Abstract
Purpose
Research has supported both feedback’s variable effects on performance and the effect of attributions on subsequent behavior. Managers’ attributions for subordinates’ performance affect how they react to those subordinates and the feedback they give, and subordinates’ own attributions affect their subsequent behavior. It is unclear whether (or how) a manager’s attributions for subordinate behavior affect subordinate behavior. Building on research that shows emotional reactions in response to attributions in feedback, this study aims to examine how recipients’ perceptions and subsequent effort and performance are affected when others’ attributions are shared through feedback.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on attribution theory and feedback intervention theory, this study conducts a lab experiment using manipulated performance feedback to test the effects of feedback sign and attributions in the feedback. Perceptions of the attribution are also measured to test their effects. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance and regression in SPSS 27.
Findings
Results show that perceptions of the attribution communicated in feedback, rather than feedback sign alone, affect perceived valence of the feedback (e.g. feedback with an attribution to luck is generally perceived as negative). These perceptions also affect feedback acceptance and impact subsequent effort and performance more than the “objective” attribution, underscoring the importance of recipient reactions and perceptions in the feedback process.
Originality/value
This paper shows that recipients’ perceptions of others’ attributions included in feedback impact feedback reactions, effort and performance. This is valuable to scholars researching feedback and to practitioners to better understand how feedback they deliver may be interpreted.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the diversity and equality perspectives from the national context of India and introduce a special issue about equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in India.
Design/methodology/approach
This special issue consists of six articles on current EDI issues in India. The first three of the contributions are focused on descriptions of diversity challenges and policies regarding caste and disabilities, while the remaining three papers address gender diversity.
Findings
In addition to providing an overview of this issue's articles, this paper highlights developments and current themes in India's country-specific equality and diversity scholarship. Drawing on the special issue's six papers, the authors show the relevance of Western theories while also pointing to the need for reformulation of others in the context of India.
Research limitations/implications
The authors conclude with a call to further explore diversity in India and to develop locally relevant, culture-sensitive theoretical frameworks. Religious and economic diversity should receive more attention in future diversity management scholarship in the Indian context.
Originality/value
How does India experience equality and diversity concepts? How are India's approaches similar or different from those experienced in other countries? How do theoretical frameworks originated in the West apply in India? Are new, locally grounded frameworks needed to better capture the developments at play? These questions are addressed by the contributions to this special issue.
