Abstract

The 1970s were a successful decade of growth and diversification for Norton Company. In 1979, sales exceeded $1 billion, ranking Norton 261 on the list of Fortune's 500 industrial companies. Half of Norton's sales were made outside the United States. In 1979, the company's return on equity was 20 percent. Norton maintained a leading market position in its historical business, abrasives, and in half a dozen other industries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to represent Kaizen implementation in a machine vice manufacturing company. Kaizen has shown tremendous impacts on the production techniques and lead times. A large number of small-scale industries have shown their existence in India. It has been difficult for small industries to survive due to tough competition among them. All are facing problems like low production and poor-quality products.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology applied to implement Kaizen in Indian small-scale industry. Fishbone diagrams have been used to represent cause and effects. The result has been shown as savings in terms of money and time.

Findings

Inventory access time is reduced up to 87 per cent and total distance travelled and total time taken by product is reduced up to 43.75 and 46.08 per cent, respectively. A habit to maintain a clean workplace has been developed in workers.

Research limitations/implications

ISO could be integrated with Kaizen for more improvements.

Practical implications

The paper should assist those practitioners and consultants who have the desire to understand a better way of Kaizen implementation in small-scale industries of India.

Originality/value

This paper yields lots of values for practitioners to understand the need, impacts and significance of Kaizen implementation in small-scale industries of India. Also, it bridges the gap between theory and practice of Kaizen implementation in real working conditions in Indian industries.

Abstract

Examines the product life cycle (PLC) concept as presented in much of the marketing literature, and the implications of PLC‐based strategic action for marketing practitioners. A range of problems is identified with the PLC, and an evolutionary perspective for product management decisions is considered. Concludes that an evolutionary perspective is more appropriate than PLC‐based approaches, and proposes an evolutionary model known as “Lamarckism”, which is better able to account for the realities of product evolution than the Darwinian model.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper argues that information containers provide valuable context clues that can help students make choices about how to engage with information content. The authors present a strategic approach to source evaluation rooted in format and authority threshold concepts.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed a source evaluation strategy with the objective of deciding whether to trust an information source. This strategy involves a set of cues to help readers mindfully engage with both the container and content of a given source.

Findings

When conducting research, non-experts are asked to evaluate content in the absence of relevant subject expertise. The cues presented in this paper offer practical tactics informed by the concepts of authority (to help make an accessible judgment of intellectual trust) and format (to help make more informed decisions about the content they find in a browser).

Originality/value

While librarians have produced many evaluative models and checklists to help students evaluate information, this paper contributes a unique strategic approach grounded in two information literacy threshold concepts – format and authority – and enacted through a series of actions drawn from website evaluation models, fact-checking, and metacognitive exercises.

Abstract

Piezoelectric actuators are well established for use in expensive optical equipment. Within the last decade, relatively inexpensive piezoelectric actuators have become established technology in pneumatic switching and the first piezoelectrically driven impactive robot grippers are just starting to emerge. Although this article concentrates largely on the use of piezoelectric actuators for use in robot gripping systems, the potential for applications outside this field is immense.

Abstract

Proposes a framework for considering the factors relevant to the design of manufacturing strategy processes. The framework is built from manufacturing and business strategy literature through a review which positions popular strategies like Cellular manufacturing, TQM and JIT within more traditional manufacturing strategy frameworks and includes aspects of strategy that have been rarely mentioned in the manufacturing strategy literature. Thus competence, capability, culture and alternative strategy process modes are incorporated and throughout the review potential influences on the design of the strategy process are identified. Finally the framework′s ability to assist the design of a manufacturing strategy process is tested and the dependence of key process elements like the procedure and tools used are shown to be contingent on, for example, the outputs required from the process and the content areas under development.
