Abstract

Although this is a survey of research techniques, it has become increasingly apparent, as the study has progressed, that our investigation of research methods for use in tourism and travel studies, without prior consideration of the nature and scopes of tourism and travel themselves, would he inadequate. At the outset it would be imperative to distinguish three interrelated terms. These are recreation, tourism, and travel.

Abstract

Formal decision analysis is restricted to situations in which alternative choices are available, and often this is not a feature of investment project studies involving touristic facilities. That is, more often than not, a study is made to determine the “feasibility” of a particular proposed project, with primary emphasis on economic considerations; and the decision is merely to go ahead with the project or not. On the other hand in some circumstances there may be alternative choices available, such as several architectural arrangements, alternative locations, etc., and these need to be evaluated on economic criteria. But often the major considerations are essentially non‐economic and no systematic procedures are employed for introducing these factors into the analysis.

Abstract

For a developing country striving to increase its ‘buying power’ in the community of nations, the establishment of a tourism industry is an important tactic for the generation of foreign exchange earnings, and the implementation of such a tactic frequently involves a high level of direction from the central government. When such governmental involvement extends to include the direct investment of public funds in touristic facilities, then the central authority is faced with the problem of determining the most appropriate program for allocating the capital investments. The present study constitutes an investigation of this decision problem.

Abstract

In a companion paper (1) a general mathematical model for the allocation of touristic investments was developed. In this paper a solution methodology for the model is developed based on the principles of dynamic programming. At each stage of the dynamic program an integer program is solved to limit the range of values of the state variable which must explicitly be considered. The algorithm is illustrated through an example, and the advantages of the solution procedure are explained by considering the solution as a base for the strategic decision making in the touristic sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the availability and contribution of destinations’ telecommunication structure and development on tourism development for the case of the small island economy of Mauritius.

Design/methodology/approach

The research uses annual data from 1992 to 2017 in a dynamic econometric setting, namely, an autoregressive distributed lag model to take into account the time series properties of the data.

Findings

Analysis of the results showed that telecommunication has contributed positively, albeit to a lesser extent as compared to other classical determinants, to tourist development in both the short and long run. In addition, the relatively high income elasticity also suggests that Mauritius is considered as a luxurious destination. Tourists were found to be sensitive to the relative prices and cost of the destination, tourism infrastructure and the island’s development level. Finally, the study confirms the presence repeat tourism on the island.

Practical implications

The result clearly provides support to the Government’s strategy to pursue an accelerated investment in telecommunication infrastructure and also to give further incentives to private operators to promote innovation and enhanced connectivity. It is recognised that the positive effect of telecommunication on the tourism industry relies on a national enabling telecommunication environment which is multi facet in nature, relying on to a large extent on infrastructure, access, capacity building and the legal framework among others.

Originality/value

The study is believed to supplement the literature by analysing the telecommunication–tourism link in a direct way as existing studies have largely discussed the link indirectly. Moreover, it uses a classical international demand for tourism model, augmented with a measure of telecommunication, and uses recent dynamic time series econometric framework to account for the existence of dynamism in tourism modelling. Finally, the research brings additional evidences from an island economy perspective (heavily tourist dependent and geographically remote), often neglected by the related literature which has focused mainly on developed countries.

Abstract

This study of 429 United States pleasure visitors to Canada demonstrates that research based on personal values can be fruitfully applied to the segmentation of international tourism markets. The relative importance attached by a visitor to 16 attributes which describe the touristic attractiveness of a foreign city were used as clustering variables. Three major segments were found, with each segment possessing a unique personal‐value profile. These value profiles were meaningful and distinctive enough to offer the international tourism marketer actionable portraits on which to base product development and marketing communication strategies that match a segment′s personal‐value orientations.

Abstract

During a relatively brief period of time, the tourist industry has grown to become an important component in the economies of many areas. Recent criticisms of the industry have created concern and confusion among officials. The purposes of this discussion are: 1) to review briefly the historical roots of current problems, and 2) to identify alternative courses of action open to affected areas.

Abstract

The representation of Heterogeneous Object (HO) is divided into two categories: Data model (DM) and material evaluation paradigm (MEP). A hybrid methodology with geometry model and volumetric dataset to represent heterogeneous properties is proposed in this paper. Geometry model of an object can guarantee the accuracy of the final HO slices; and volumetric dataset lends the flexible manipulability and other advantages to HO representation. Two MEPs, namely distance field (DF) based and Fixed Reference Features & Active Grading Source(s) (FRF&AGS) are presented to facilitate the process of HO representation according to the designer)s input parameters. The DM can be modified interactively with users until the final satisfactory result is obtained. In this paper, a scheme of HO slicing is described. In this method, we utilize the slices contour of geometrical model as constraint to reconstruct the HO slices, which can theoretically achieve the same accuracy with the geometrical shape. Some examples of Heterogeneous object represented with our scheme are provided.
