Abstract
To ascertain to what extent academic librarians in Nigeria satisfy the bibliographical and information requirements of scholarship and research, and whether the institutional settings in which staff work are conducive to effective professional service, this study, based upon the six oldest Nigerian University libraries, was undertaken. Among major elements examined were the librarians' perceptions of their responsibilities; their academic and professional backgrounds; work environments; job satisfaction and opportunities for continuing education and professional development. It was found that effective professional library service has been hindered by such factors as the inability of the library administrators to conceptualize the proper role of a librarian; rigid bureaucratization in the libraries; failure to separate professional from non‐professional duties or to match job content with relevant knowledge and capability; and by limited incentives and opportunities for continuing education and professional growth.

This paper sets out to elicit the patterns of information storage and retrieval in Nigerian university libraries.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper sets out to elicit the patterns of information storage and retrieval in Nigerian university libraries.
Design/methodology/approach
A descriptive survey method was adopted in looking at the various patterns of information storage and retrieval in Nigerian university libraries.
Findings
The findings of the research revealed that storage and retrieval devices such as computer hard disks, audio‐tapes, video‐tapes, video‐players, television, Internet, Xerox, database management systems, microforms, CD‐ROM, worm‐disk, magnetic‐optical disk, magnetic tapes, flat files, memory cards and many others are the various patterns through which information/data can be stored and retrieved in Nigerian university libraries. This has brought about widespread technological resources for effective and efficient routine library operations.
Originality/value
This research and its findings will assist Nigerian university libraries and beyond to know how best to care for their information/data storage and retrieval, and ensure that adequate facilities are provided and experts/librarians are trained in such contexts, so as to meet changing trends in the world and in order to satisfy users' information needs.

Abstract
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS subject headings are relatively unusual in this country and they do provide for some relatively unusual headings. ‘Ground effect machines’ and ‘one‐leg resting positions’ are just two examples. ‘Ground effect machines’ refers to such things as hovercraft. ‘One‐leg resting position’ however could cover books on anthropology or art. ‘Negative income‐tax’ sounds like something we would all like to receive but it's not exactly the first term which springs to mind to describe income benefit schemes. However, despite these oddities, our subject catalogue seems to be fairy well used and our new guide cards make it even easier to use.

Abstract
Purpose
Electronic library (E-library) is a form of computer mediated system that uses electronic media, such as Web/internet devices and distributes resources to improve on the quality of teaching and learning. Students’ use of e-library for learning is essential and as such the government has invested hugely into its subscription for several university libraries in Ghana. However, most university students feel reluctant to use the e-library resources for their studies. The purpose of this paper is therefore to examine the factors that influence students’ intention to use e-library resources for their studies.
Design/methodology/approach
Questionnaire was used to collect data from 200 students from one Technical University in Ghana. Structural equation modeling (SmartPLS) was used to analyze the data.
Findings
The study found that accessibility, attitude, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and relevance to studies have positive significant effect on students’ attitude to use e-library. In addition, self-efficacy, subjective norm and attitude have positive significant influence on students’ intention to use e-library.
Research limitations/implications
Although the sample frame used for this study may be unique, but the total amount of data collected was limited to providing the general representative of the Ghanaian students in one particular university. Other researchers may consider collecting data from other universities to extend the sample frame for a larger sample size of students.
Practical implications
Academic administrators need to organize training and workshops on how to use the e-library portal for their search and other didactic assignments. Most importantly, students should be given IT or internet tutorials as foundation for the use of the e-library portal.
Social implications
Universities have to provide internet access such as hotspot and network routers at the labs, classrooms and other vantage points. It is believed that with these in place, adequate access to the internet would promote students’ engagement on the e-library facility.
Originality/value
The study examines the factors that influence students’ intention to use e-library resources for their studies in Ghana.

Abstract
This study attempts to contribute to a better understanding of the operation of the public library system in Nigeria by using the Bauchi Public Library as a case study. The text reviews the origin and growth of the Library over the years and finds that the Library is book oriented and thus basically caters for literates. The existing resources of the Library are evaluated while the problems facing it are documented. Recommendations are made with the view to bringing about the general improvement in the Library in terms of management structure and providing more facilities to cater for all categories of users.

Abstract
Studies the libraries in the Nigerian rural set‐up. Personal observations and surveys as well as documentary literature were used in the study to acquire state‐of‐the‐art information. The peculiar nature of library branches in the different states of Nigeria made the study cover the country as a case study. The rural libraries′ efforts in their various roles have been discovered to have complementary efforts from such organizations as: MAMSER and DFRRI. Better co‐ordination of rural service by any organization can best be done through RDUIs. Gives various recommendations on how better library and information service could be given to the ruralites.

Abstract
Appraises the status of availability of educational resources such as books and related resources. Personal involvemental, observational study of the situation with a documentary literature, corroboration were the method used in carrying out this work. Nigeria as a whole is the field of study. Results show that various factors, on the demand side and on the supply side greatly determine the availability and pricing of the educational resources. Finally, recommends six inter‐related remedial solutions as a basis for which the educational resources can be available to the users.
