Abstract

Purpose

This research investigates the impact of Dufour effects and viscous dissipation on unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) natural convection in an incompressible, viscous, and electrically conductive fluid over a vertically oscillating flat plate. The study highlights the significance of magnetic fields in influencing thermal and mass transfer, particularly in the context of thermal radiation. Computational fluid dynamics method including finite difference or finite element techniques can be used to crack the governing equations of the fluid flow. In this work, we used the finite element method (FEM) numerical technique to analyze the numerical behavior of unsteady boundary layer flow of Casson fluid with natural convection past an oscillating vertical plate. Key parameters such as skin friction, temperature, concentration, velocity and Sherwood numbers are derived and analyzed. The results demonstrate that viscous dissipation significantly elevates the fluid temperature, while an increase in the radiation parameter is associated with a decrease in internal friction at the plate. These findings provide critical insights into the interplay between thermal radiation and magnetic fields in MHD flows, with potential applications in engineering systems involving heat and mass transfer, such as cooling systems and material processing. This study underscores the importance of understanding these dynamics for optimizing the performance of MHD applications in various industrial settings.

Design/methodology/approach

The mainly authorized and energetic FEM to explain the non-linear, dimensionless partial differential equations (11–13) via equation with boundary conditions (14) makes use of Bathe (36), Reddy (37), Connor (38) and Chung (39). Following are the key steps that make up the method: discretize the domain, derivation of element equation, assembly of element equation, imposition of boundary condition and solution of assembly equation.

Findings

This study examined the impact of viscid dissipative radiation and the Dufour effect on unsteady one-dimensional MHD natural convective flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting fluid past an infinite moving vertical flat plate with a chemical reaction. Numerically solving the governing equations using the FEM approach is efficient and precise, aiming to be applied to fluid mechanics and related problems. Along with their effects on temperature, concentration and velocity, the following parameters are included: the mass Grashof number, the Soret number, the Grashof number, the Prandtl number, chemical reaction, the Schmidt number, radiation and the Casson parameter. Both the Grashof numbers of thermal and mass rates (Gr, Gm) make an increment in the velocity region. The velocity decreases with an increase in the magnetic parameter. The velocity increases with an increase in the permeability of the porous medium parameter. The temperature flow rate is higher for both Dufour and Viscid dissipation, while a decrement is noted of both Prandtl number and radiation effects. The decrementing behavior of the concentration region is observed at supreme inputs of chemical reaction coefficient and Schmidt number.

Abstract

The traditional predictor of technical inefficiency proposed by Jondrow, Lovell, Materov, and Schmidt (1982) is a conditional expectation. This chapter explores whether, and by how much, the predictor can be improved by using auxiliary information in the conditioning set. It considers two types of stochastic frontier models. The first type is a panel data model where composed errors from past and future time periods contain information about contemporaneous technical inefficiency. The second type is when the stochastic frontier model is augmented by input ratio equations in which allocative inefficiency is correlated with technical inefficiency. Compared to the standard kernel-smoothing estimator, a newer estimator based on a local linear random forest helps mitigate the curse of dimensionality when the conditioning set is large. Besides numerous simulations, there is an illustrative empirical example.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the heat and mass transfer with Soret-Dufour effects for the magnetohydrodynamic three-dimensional flow of second grade fluid in the rotating frame of reference.

Design/methodology/approach

Series solution is obtained by homotopy analysis method.

Findings

Increase in Soret number, Schmidt number and Dufour number, the heat transfer increases and mass transfer decreases. Effects of Prandtl and Eckert numbers are qualitatively similar as they assist the temperature profile and reduce the concentration of species. Increase in the length of the channel versus height increases the temperature profile but decreases the concentration field. Increase in the second grade fluid parameter causes reduction in both the temperature and concentration fields. The heat flux values at the lower plate are smaller than the values at the upper plate, whereas the situation is opposite in the case of mass transfer.

Originality/value

These findings will be useful for the fluid flow in porous channel.

Abstract

We take Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT) seriously by rigorously estimating structural models using the full set of CPT parameters. Much of the literature only estimates a subset of CPT parameters, or more simply assumes CPT parameter values from prior studies. Our data are from laboratory experiments with undergraduate students and MBA students facing substantial real incentives and losses. We also estimate structural models from Expected Utility Theory (EUT), Dual Theory (DT), Rank-Dependent Utility (RDU), and Disappointment Aversion (DA) for comparison. Our major finding is that a majority of individuals in our sample locally asset integrate. That is, they see a loss frame for what it is, a frame, and behave as if they evaluate the net payment rather than the gross loss when one is presented to them. This finding is devastating to the direct application of CPT to these data for those subjects. Support for CPT is greater when losses are covered out of an earned endowment rather than house money, but RDU is still the best single characterization of individual and pooled choices. Defenders of the CPT model claim, correctly, that the CPT model exists “because the data says it should.” In other words, the CPT model was borne from a wide range of stylized facts culled from parts of the cognitive psychology literature. If one is to take the CPT model seriously and rigorously then it needs to do a much better job of explaining the data than we see here.

Abstract

This chapter explores the issue of ethnic diversity and race discrimination among elementary school teachers in Ireland. It examines both the historical precedents of this discrimination and uses the current experiences of Immigrant Internationally Educated Teachers (IIETs) living in Ireland to explore the phenomenon contemporaneously. The chapter begins by delineating the historical context of immigration in Ireland and more recent population data. It then explores the relevant legislative provisions to address employment and race discrimination in the Irish context. Owing to the deep-seated and historical origins of the current race discrimination, a particular focus is placed on delineating the evolution of the selection and recruitment of elementary teachers in Ireland imbued with the right to teach in elementary schools. Drawing on data ascertained through semi-structured interviews with a range of IIETs, positioned within the aforementioned analyses of relevant historical documents, the chapter then moves to explore some experiences of IIETs seeking to work in the Irish elementary school system. The chapter analyses these data through a Bourdieuian lens, paying particular attention to ways in which power has been, and continues to be, exercised by the State in regulating access to prestigeful mainstream teaching positions. The chapter proceeds to root these analyses within Kitching’s work on ‘race moves’, arguing that immigrant teachers have been racialized as other on the basis of an absence of proficiency in the Irish language.

Abstract

This chapter provides a survey of alternative methodologies for measuring and comparing productivity and efficiency of airlines, and reviews representative empirical studies. The survey shows the apparent shift from index procedures and traditional OLS estimation of production and cost functions to stochastic frontier methods and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methods over the past three decades. Most of the airline productivity and efficiency studies over the last decade adopt some variant of DEA methods. Researchers in the 1980s and 1990s were mostly interested in the effects of deregulation and liberalization on airline productivity and efficiency as well as the effects of ownership and governance structure. Since the 2000s, however, studies tend to focus on how business models and management strategies affect the performance of airlines. Environmental efficiency now becomes an important area of airline productivity and efficiency studies, focusing on CO2 emission as a negative or undesirable output. Despite the fact that quality of service is an important aspect of airline business, limited attempts have been made to incorporate quality of service in productivity and efficiency analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The current determination is committed to characterize the boundary layer flow of Williamson nanofluid prompted by nonlinear strained superficial under heat and mass transport mechanisms. Buongiorno model is presented to view the influence of nanoparticles in fluid flow. Scrutiny has been conceded under the action of the transversely smeared magnetic field. Heat and mass relocation exploration are conducted in the companionship of radiation effects and actinic compensation.

Design/methodology/approach

Similarity variable is designated to transmute nonlinear partial differential equations of conservation laws of mass, momentum, energy and species into ordinary dimensional expressions. These constitutive and complicated ordinary differential expressions assessing the flow situation are handled efficaciously by manipulating Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg procedure (RK-5) with shooting routine.

Findings

The graphical demonstration is deliberated to scrutinize the variation in velocity, temperature and concentration profiles with respect to flow regulating parameters. Numerical data are displayed through tables in order to surmise variation in skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number. The augmenting values of fluid parameter and magnetic parameter reduces the horizontal fluid velocity, whereas normal velocity upsurges for mounting values of stretching ratio parameter. Moreover, mounting values of radiation parameter and thermophoresis parameter upsurges the temperature profile, whereas, growing values of Prandtl number lessen the temperature field.

Practical implications

The current exploration is used in many industrial and engineering applications in order to discuss the transport phenomenon.

Originality/value

Flow over a nonlinear stretched surface has numerous applications in the industry. The present attempt examines the combined influence of various physical characteristics for the flow of Williamson fluid and no such attempt exist in the available literature.
