Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a model, based on strategic simulation and scenario planning, to improve the decision-making process in the Brazilian defence area.

Design/methodology/approach

Participants are disposed in three levels: decision-makers team – which goes beyond the Ministry of Defence (and military services) alone and includes other representatives of the executive and legislative branches; political and strategic advisory team – civilian representatives with a broad understanding of the national and international contexts that can contribute to developing insights and shaping the forces that may contribute to the nation’s future; and experts database— experts in fields of interest to national defence, comprising representatives of several sectors and broad areas of knowledge, including scholars, scientists, politicians, military, industry, among others.

Findings

The planning and preparation of national defence strategies require a long-term approach, which is multidisciplinary, participatory and contextualized to the geopolitical and institutional frames of the country.

Research limitations/implications

However, despite many policy papers intentions, defence issues have always been considered a matter for the military arena due to the country’s cultural background.

Practical/implications

Because decisions about defence have long-range impacts and political implications, policy-makers should shape them bearing in mind a complex and politically shared foresight process.

Social/implications

This proposed planning process enables a participatory engagement with some civil organizations and individuals as well as amplifies their commitment in national defence issues.

Originality/value

The proposal is innovative in South America, considering that it encompasses integrated simulations on participatory foresight processes as well as broadened the civilian–military dynamic relationship and the diverse viewpoints in defence implications analysis to include a wider share of the Brazilian society.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a modeling and decision-making framework for organizational sustainability excellence of construction firms. This research aims to find how construction organizations can achieve excellence in terms of corporate sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first reviews the literature of organizational sustainability maturity, and then differentiates its approach by focusing on organizational sustainability excellence. Organizational maturity and organizational excellence in sustainability are two approaches to organizational performance management that aim to improve organizational sustainability performance.

Findings

After a detailed model design and development process, models were run and sensitivity analysis was performed. After running various scenarios, it was shown that both workforce management and knowledge management are key components of People Capability, and they play crucial roles in the viability and sustainability performance of construction firms. Therefore, human resource development and training affect all capability areas of construction organizations without which no capability-building programs can be planned and implemented effectively.

Practical implications

Organizational excellence focuses on organizational resources, capabilities and knowledge management to determine what is driving the long-term success of organizations, whereas the organizational maturity focuses on organizational processes. This paper presents a modeling approach that can facilitate the process of policy verifications in organizations.

Originality/value

Organizations may have various options in choosing different policies, and those policies can be planned and expressed in different manners and along different scales. How can an organization determine which scenarios end up producing the desired performance results? The proposed framework presents a practical methodology that can result in the assessment of organizational excellence methodologies.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable development is key to firms' competitiveness, survival, growth and profitability, although sustainability emerges as a great challenge. The aim of this study is to analyze the links between organizational creativity (which integrates sustainability orientation), sustainability-oriented innovation and the multidimensionality of firms' sustainability performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 417 valid responses from manufacturing SMEs were collected through a questionnaire. PLS-SEM is the statistical technique used in the hypothesis testing.

Findings

Organizational creativity (which integrates sustainability orientation) and sustainability-oriented innovation are positively associated with economic sustainability performance, environmental sustainability performance and social sustainability performance; sustainability-oriented innovation has a partial mediation effect on the relationship between organizational creativity and economic, environmental, and social sustainability performance; and organizational creativity (which integrates sustainability orientation) has a positive effect on sustainability-oriented innovation.

Originality/value

Sustainability orientation is integrated into organizational creativity without limiting it, sustainability-oriented innovation encompasses innovation and sustainability in all its breadth without forgetting the innovation process openness, and firm's sustainability performance has a multidimensional approach. Such innovation and creativity contribute – in an interconnected way – to sustainable development, as well as overcoming sustainability challenges and firms' barriers to sustainability. Likewise, the aforementioned creativity must be implemented throughout the company, even beyond its contribution to the innovation process. Thus, the implementation of new ideas, thoughts, perspectives, views, and mental models – fruit of the described creative process – will generate new models and paths in which firms' profitability, growth and survival are related with overcoming environmental and social problems.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainability in corporate real estate management (CREM) has been lately recognized as an integral part of almost every business. However, its perception might extremely differ in various industries. Sustainable CREM practices have been extensively analyzed in recent studies, yet real estate is an ambiguous field and the practices still lack holistic understanding. This research aimed to summarize and systematize the present sustainable CREM practices and propose a generic sustainability maturity model for CREM.

Design/methodology/approach

The research process was implemented in accordance with the grounded theory approach. Research data were collected in semi-structured interviews with major Finnish companies, recognized for their environmental work. The scope of the research was nine interviews.

Findings

The result of this research is the generic sustainability maturity model for CREM. It consists of 18 most typical sustainable CREM practices at the companies interviewed. The model demonstrates the value of implementing sustainable CREM.

Originality/value

Sustainability maturity model for CREM is an indicative tool for sustainability maturity assessment in CREM. The model demonstrates how CREM contributes to company's sustainability and provides a holistic approach towards the existing sustainable CREM practices. Additional practical implications of the model include sustainable CREM benchmarking and communication with stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present and discuss an innovative maturity model (MM) to assess supply chain quality management (SCQM). The SCQM MM can be used to guide organizations in the development and improvement of quality in their supply chains (SCs). Additionally, this paper intends to better understand that integration and its impacts on organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed MM was developed based on an exhaustive literature review of the most relevant MMs developed in the areas of quality management, supply chain management and other relevant domains.

Findings

The proposed MM consists of a matrix with 100 criteria organized in five organizational dimensions and five maturity levels, embracing the most relevant SC issues and describing a progressive path towards a state of full maturity.

Originality/value

It is an innovative tool useful for both academic experts and practitioners to integrate quality management across the SC, thus promoting and improving organizational performance from an integrated and sustainable perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the motivation and present the evolution from a Software Product Line (SPL) in the e-Gov Web (e-Gov Web SPL) domain to a SPL in the mobile domain (e-Gov Mobile SPL).

Design/methodology/approach

The evolution was supported by the Product Line UML-Based Software Engineering approach and the feature model.

Findings

The authors were able to observe that it is feasible to evolve from a SPL for the Web platform to a SPL for the mobile platform, with the intent to port existing Web applications to mobile platforms such that users can have access to the main information and are able to interact with the most important functionalities of Web applications in a mobile device.

Research limitations/implications

As for the main limitations, the authors can point out the small number of instantiations performed until the moment with the support of the e-Gov Mobile SPL, what prevented the conduction of an empirical study.

Practical implications

Using e-Gov Mobile SPL, it is possible to reduce development time and cost.

Originality/value

The existing SPLs do not worry about supporting the development of mobile applications corresponding to existing Web applications, as it is desirable to have access to the information and main features of these applications in mobile devices. We obtained some e-Gov Mobile SPL instantiations corresponding to e-Gov Web SPL instantiations to attend the demands of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation Unit situated at Campo Grande, MS, Brazil.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents M-PoP, a method to model large, complex, and dynamic business processes. These processes have sometimes resulted from alliances of organizations (i.e. joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions) and are referred to as Processes-of-Business Processes (PoP). Due to the difficulty of modeling these dynamic processes, alliances of organizations have often lost opportunities, competitiveness, and profitability, so requiring suitable modeling methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors proposed M-PoP that can model PoP through three views in different abstraction levels and using well-known techniques in industry and academia, mainly those from Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN). For this, M-PoP presents three main steps: identification of PoP elements, modeling of PoP, and verification of PoP models. To evaluate M-PoP, we applied it in a real-world business process in the health domain.

Findings

The evaluation results point out the capability and viability of M-PoP to deal with dynamic business processes.

Research limitations/implications

M-PoP still needs to be applied in various real-world scenarios to gather evidence of its productivity, efficiency, and scalability.

Practical implications

This novel method could change the way organizations model their business processes and, as a consequence, it could leverage strategic business opportunities.

Originality/value

M-PoP is the first method that makes it possible to model large and complex business processes and, most importantly, dynamic processes.

Abstract

Purpose

In developing countries such as India, start-ups play an essential role in “industrial output,” “Gross Domestic Product ” and “employment creation.” Evidence suggests that pandemics have risen over the last century due to rising global travel and assimilation, urbanization, alterations in land use, and significantly larger exploitation of the natural environment. These trends are likely to continue and intensify. These pandemic episodes affect businesses, especially start-ups. Supplier selection is among the vital critical elements that start-ups must include in start-ups' strategy procedures during the pandemic episodes. This study's focus is to “identify,” “analyze,” and “categorize” the factors affecting supplier selection in start-ups during frequent pandemic episodes like coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Design/methodology/approach

Through “literature review” and “experts' opinion” from various start-ups in India, ten affecting factors were identified. Total Interpretative Structural Modeling (TISM) and Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification (MICMAC) were employed to analyze the interrelationship among the factors affecting the supplier selection on start-ups during frequent pandemic episodes, and these factors were ranked as “autonomous,” “independent,” “linkage,” and “dependent” factors.

Findings

The findings show that “performance history,” “service levels,” “technical capability,” and “financial stability” are the most critical factors affecting the supplier selection on start-ups during frequent pandemic episodes. The next importance should be safety and environmental concern” and “quality.”

Research limitations/implications

The factors affecting supplier selection on start-ups during frequent pandemic episodes are the current focus of this study. This study is mainly performed on Indian start-ups and can be extended to other countries.

Practical implications

The start-ups can rely on this study to clearly understand the factors affecting the supplier selection on start-ups during frequent pandemic episodes.

Originality/value

There is no research regarding factors affecting supplier selection on start-ups during the COVID-19 emergencies. This research gap is filled by analyzing aspects linked to supplier selection in start-ups. This gap inspired the present study, which employs the “Total Interpretive Structural Modeling (TISM)” technique to uncover supplier selection determinants and investigate hierarchical interconnections among factors influencing/affecting supplier selection in start-ups during frequent pandemic episodes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes a multicriteria model for risk management to identify and assess risks associated with an integrated management system (IMS). The main benefit of the proposed model is its systemic and logical visualization, which may facilitate the understanding of this proposal’s practical application.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design consists of four stages: (1) conduct a literature review to establish risk management models in IMS; (2) collect data concerning risk management models in IMS from a large multinational automotive company; (3) propose a multicriteria model to define and assess risks as well as prioritize mitigation actions and (4) apply the proposed multicriteria model to the data collected in case-based research to evaluate the practical viability of the model to contribute to methods traditionally used.

Findings

The results showed that the proposed risk management model contributes to more reliable decision-making in an IMS. The application of the proposed model identified 85 risks in the total processes of the IMS, 31 of which were classified as high risk; thus, priority actions to be taken were defined. The risk classification and prioritization facilitated the implementation of measures to mitigate or eliminate risks, as pointed out by the company managers.

Research limitations/implications

One of the limitations is the fact that specific knowledge is required to maintain and update the multicriteria decision-making tool used in this study. Another one implies the approach to managing risks under the different ISO standards and sector-specific requirements, since this may require updates and customization of the proposed risk management model.

Practical implications

The implementation of IMS in contemporary business environments can be supported by a robust risk management approach. In addition, it provides the leadership with a holistic view of multiple aspects related to a company and fosters continuous improvement.

Social implications

The social implications of this study are assessed indirectly. This study contributes to the improvement of company management models.

Originality/value

Traditionally, the methods used for risk management in IMS are usually applied independently of techniques such as failure mode and effect analysis. The model developed in this work enables to manage risks continuously to achieve a systemic view of organizational issues and greater transparency of the processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The main objective of this research was to combine the integration between two fields of knowledge – future-oriented technology analysis (FTA) and games. This study aims to capture the stakeholders’ actions and decision-making in a procedural, interactive and collaborative way to find a vision of the future.

Design/methodology/approach

The framework was designed from a literature review on the related research topics, exploring elements and methods, also how we brought the two fields together. The framework was structured in four steps: exploring – deciding – matching – evaluating. For each phase, deep reflections were described to understand the current situation, identify essential future issues and provide recommendations for action.

Findings

One attractive aspect of the FTA-games is the characteristics of each field but combined made it possible to evaluate future developments and trends. The elements present in games can boost FTA activities through interaction, engagement, experiences, collaboration and motivation, among other elements. Systematically, we seek to ensure traceability by identifying challenges, solutions, execution and results achieved and using tools and elements that make prospecting practical.

Originality/value

This article systematizes the connection between two fields in the form of a framework. At each stage of the framework, participants and strategists are challenged to seek solutions to future challenges, allowing these participants to engage in a common cause and make actions tangible. Game elements can be shaped to explore new avenues in FTA activities, as they are used in games in specific subject domains. These fields tend to be fragmented and are not integrated.
